Is cursing bad? Are you desensitized to it? Does swearing show maturity?

It is not definitive by any means, but there have been studies that show that people who swear, even on occasion, tend to have a better grasp of said language and have a slightly higher intelligence than normal.

Of course, swearing in abundance could be off-putting to people, so it's better to be used somewhat sparingly when the opportunity presents itself. Swearing isn't bad, though everything have its right time and place.

I don't really care if someone choose to swear, if anything, it makes it easier to connect in some ways because swearing is normal and part of daily life.

Here's an example: You're done taking a shower and accidentally manage to kick into those pesky toe-seeking edges of a chair or a table. How do you react?

Our species expresses itself through a billion means and ways. Swearing is one of them, especially on expressing how one may feel in said moment.

Just to put in my two bits, I don't really swear at all. I like to use less intense words so the swearing doesn't lose its gravity, so if I do end up swearing, you know it's an actual serious issue. Like just now when I found out my professor told us about an exam.. the night before. So I missed it. And I'm obviously pissed about it.

It's also a matter of manners, I don't very much enjoy being around people who swear profusely because regardless of their actions, they just come off as aggressive and angry; not the type of person I want to be around.

This of course doesn't include situations where swearing is used humorously, or if we're in a workplace setting or something. Cause my goodness have I wanted to scream out customers at my jobs sometimes :lie:

I usually adapt heavily to the person I am communicating with and that way I kind of mold my language to fit the subject in question like I am sure many others do. Or in layman's terms swear words are used as commas among my army buddies and other more "coarse" friends out of public but in general I aim to use very polite and soft language so that people I am not super familiar with don't feel uncomfortable thanks to my colorful tongue! :D

So all in all I don't think it's bad at all but I prefer to only let it loose with those who I know will be OK with my exceedingly creative ways to put my thought into words.

I curse like a sailor :pinkie-innocent:). But it’s not to display dominance or measure of maturity. In my case, it’s does reflect emotion. Interesting enough; some studies suggest, that people who use profanity tends to be honest.

So…. warning ahead ⚠️ ‼️ when I do curse, I’d suggest anyone not to read further if you’re sensitive to strong language.:nervous-shy:

Oh I’ve refused to go on a date with a someone before just because they swore way too much. It’s a gross behavior. Occasional swearing is fine, I do it myself but people who’s every other word is a curse word is just sad.

For me, it always comes down to context.

Regular vocabulary can be just as offensive and aggressive as cursing or swearing. It all comes down to how words as a whole are generally used. It's possible to be polite and to swear at the same time as it is to be rude and not use swear words. The perception of it all also comes down to psychology and sensitivity. There's no denying that angry and aggressive people tend to use more than their fair share of curse/swear words. So if someone has been in a constant environment with someone like that, then it can leave an impact that has them associating those words with someone who isn't very nice. On the other hoof, you can have those who use them in a jovial and friendly manner where they come up to you, and give you a hard pat on the back and ask you "How the fuck are ya, my friend? Standing strong against the world's shit? :mlp_laugh:" in a joyful, almost sing-song sort of voice full of affection.

I never used to swear, due to school and strict surroundings, because I was taught that it was "vewy vewy baaaaad" by, quite frankly a bunch of hypocritical, condescending cretins who have the usefulness and self awareness of a fork in a bowl of soup. Ironically, I started swearing because of said useless cretins. Because there is only so much a girl can take in terms of patience. And I think 15-16 years of my life holding that patience is pretty good. Considering that I was sharing my company with people that had the charm and sophistication of a wounded moose strapped to a Ferris wheel.

I had to laugh at my last post here saying that I was slowly getting used to swears in songs :Laugh_Pipp I mean, that's not wrong! Depends on how much swearing there is, though.

Also, apparently I'll swear in my head but I couldn't bare to do it in real life. :pinkie-awkward: Not something I particularly like but it's just easier to roll with it as long as my thoughts aren't getting too crazy up there.

I’ve tried over time to eliminate cursing from my vocabulary, though yeah occasionally I will let one out from surprise or rage :/ .

Definitely am not a fan of people using it continuously to compensate for lack of more meaningful words or effect.

I do use causal curse words quite a bit (damn, hell, shit, mostly). I don't think it's really good or bad, just depends on the context. I am pretty much desensitized to most cursing, but it does depend on the person how desensitized I am because some people curse a lot and some don't. I personally think dropping F bombs constantly lowers the actual impact of the word, it loses its power and becomes just another word. It's the same in writing, if your narrator or all your characters are constantly cursing the actual impact of those words just ends up being lost.
