spoiler What's up with season 5 and Cutie Marks?

Pretty much, like everyone's been saying this thread, the cutie mark focus is because that's this seasons theme. They're trying to take the tiny concept that was cutie marks from previous seasons and flesh them out really big this season.

Overall, it does feel very toyetic: Specifically, the cutie marks are probably the easiest thing for hasbro to trademark and hold onto for future MLP generations and whatnot, since they can be put on clothes and other merch where ponies wouldn't really fit, and fleshing them out will make them easier to utilize in future gens of this franchise.

I'm not really a big fan of the theme so far; it just feels... I don't know, hokey. I always found cutie marks best as just something that was aknowledge in the sparse ways they had been, and not having everything focusing around them. The characters are THEMSELVES, not the stamps on their butts. Putting more focus on the concept just makes me groan.

Either way, I 100% expect the CMC to get their cutie marks in this season, maybe even the finale, and more hokey forced focus on cutie marks this season like we got with Appleloosa's most wanted.

I know that, but it doesn't seem to be the motive behind this. It's not like there will be Appleblooms with all the different cutie marks we have seen from the episode. I'm also fairly certain that big pony with the bad luck will never make an apperance in the toy line. Maybe Starlight Glimmer will, but that's also not very lickely, as no other villain except Discord and Nightmare moon as been made into toys by Hasbro

actually, that's a sweet idea- a holographic Apple Bloom figure where her cutie mark changes depending on what like you look at it in!

I kid, of course. I'm hoping it's because they plan to delve a bit deeper into cutie marks. I have loads of questions about them and they clearly are important in many ways, beyond merchandising... they're ACTUALLY almost Equestria's equivalent to reaching puberty or having a birthmark.

it's weird that I NO long feel weird saying 'cutie mark'.

I don't even like the idea of cutie marks. The idea of being branded with my "destiny" is stupid.

AGREED so much. I disliked cutie marks in general being anything more than just a kind of tattoo that popped up when you realized something that you liked to do. Them having magic at all is something that chafes me.

Because it is the main theme for Season 5, and so far it has been more of a positive than a negative as the show has tackled some mature themes using  the idea of Cutie Marks to frame things, and more importantly questions about the nature of Cutie Marks are finally being addressed in the process. Seems like a win- win.

Even with the idea of destiny being thrown around Cutie Marks are still empowering because the element of agency is never taken away the ponies if and when they do get them.

And the show has shown that marketing ploys and good, creative entertainment don't necessarily have to be at odds with each other so yes, toys and plushies will come out of this and were definitely considered in the process behind the show. But that doesn't mean the theme itself won't or doesn't have any merit.

Agreed.

Alright I'm gonna say this again but: the CMC might be getting their marks or NOT and besides we will be getting a sixth season and an All-Pony movie in 2017, so don't worry right now, alright? Plus, in case if the CMC doesn't get their marks in future seasons including 5 and 6, it's time for a slice-of-life CMC spinoff series.
