MLP Season 5 Doing Poorer than Season 4 (In the US)

Well, I'm Canadian, but even if I did live in the U.S., I wouldn't be contributing to those numbers because I don't watch tv. What shows I do watch, I watch in other ways. If I want to support a series in a way that means something to the company behind it I'll generally buy it on DVD, but I don't watch tv on tv. Do those numbers include PVR recordings? I don't know anyone in this decade who actually sits down and watches tv shows when they air. Even people I know who watch tv either prefer Netflix or they PVR the shows they like to watch when they have time to. If they catch a show live it's because they're flipping through the channels and just happen to come across something they enjoy enough to stick with, not because they purposely set time aside to watch said show when it airs.

On the note of "cartoon network would deathslot the show"
I gotta wonder WHY is Cartoon network such a bunch of assholes to Hasbro cartoons? like why? I understand that they manhandled Transformers animated, and aren't doing robots in disguise any favors, so I just wonder why they seem to actively hate hasbros shows so much.

In reference to this topic though, I'd like to see sales numbers for FIM products (without EQG) over the past couple of years; when FIM stops growing or starts slipping, THEN we are in absolute "Shit has hit the fan" mode.

All the numbers mean is it was a shit idea to air S5 during the spring and summer when everyone is outside, as opposed to late fall and winter when they're trapped inside on Saturday mornings.

Guy has a point in given a lot of the main shows or premier of new shows is always in the fall/winter season in which people/family/kids stay home more.    Also Hasbro has not sadly expand out to much when it comes to getting MLP out more in just keeping it to Discovery Family,  I think if they expand to streaming sites that where legal like Hulu or even their own channel it would help a lot in getting the show out more along with their others.

Three reasons:

1) Bronies sadly put many off the show

2) It is a "little girls show" in the eyes of many, meaning it will never be watched as much as something that appears neutral like SU

3) Channels like Cartoon Network are much more well known and have more viewers than shitty channels like Discovery family.

The problem of course being that the show is marketed toward a very small percentage of the vast television audience. It is not like shows like Stephen Universe that are marketed and well-known as shows that can be enjoyed by all age groups, and most people have to be convinced to even try watching the show to begin with. It is made for two very specific groups, young kids and bronies, and it is not likely to change soon.

I think we shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Fact is, we know to little to make a fair judgement in what maybe could happen, if something happens at all

A big number that we are missing, is how much Hasbro makes with the sales of their merchandise, and if that number is enough for the compagny structure Hasbro has. 100.000 watchers may seem little, but if the costs for the show is really small, then it can still be profitable enough

As to why this happens? I guess because Discovery Family and the hiatus between episodes.

But we just have to wait and see

I know many people who watch it on YouTube or on a stream (like myself) so the numbers aren't REALLY accurate. Of course what matters is the amount of views on Discovery Family, but hey. What can ya do

  • 2 weeks later...

So the cure is get bronies to up their subscrition and buy more fim merch. I'll by a few plushies if it saves the show!

I don't think the merchandise is an issue at the moment; to my knowledge FIM is still selling very well  (Though I've heard that EQG is beating it now).

That's actually the ace up its sleeve that FIM has is that while ratings seem to be dropping the sales are at least holding steady if nothing more.

Well, here in Phoenix, AZ the show is just not available on basic cable.  I watch it on Dailymotion (they download a LOT faster than YouTube) because I've got no choice.  So, yeah, marketing on Discovery is doing them no favors & the timing sucks.  Summer viewership is less for almost all TV shows.

That being said, IMO to some extent the decline in viewers is due to this seasons episodes being skewed younger than Season 4.

Still, Season 6 will tell the story.  If it is 13 episodes, it is probably going to be the last season.  If it is 26, then there will probably be a season 7 & 8

Agreed. And that cable is slowly dying, and that Discovery Family isn't marketing the show. I'm surprised ratings are still that good, TBH.

In any case, the numbers aren't all that important because they can't measure Internet viewing. If there were some way to include that, I'm sure it would show that viewership is as strong as ever. And let's not forget that five or six seasons is as long as most shows can possibly maintain their original quality, so if the falling ratings ensure that Season 6 and a movie is the last of G4, that's just as well IMO. I don't need the show to go on forever. Knowing that our fandom doubled the lifetime of the program and made it bigger than it would've been otherwise...that would be enough for me!
