technology Should I use Linux or Windows?

Like I want to use Linux but iTunes isn't supported and I need to back my phone up and restore it if it goes wrong (hasn't happened yet)

But on the other hand Linux is free and I like my geeky stuff, also more stuff is free and Linux looks nicer

Also I'm a gamer but Linux fits my gaming needs

Which should I use?

I would think this more fits media discussion or something rather than life advice, but Linux is more about learning commands and such. iTunes is supported natively on Windows and pretty much windows is capable of doing everything that Linux can. You pay for it, but the old saying goes: you get what you pay for.

iTunes under Wine isn't exactly something that you could easily do, but is possible, though the tests show that iPhone detection doesn't work. I remember seeing a USB patch for Wine a while back, but you're better off using a virtual machine or dual booting.

I'd dual boot, using Windows strictly for programs and apps that do not run under Wine. However, if you do find this to be a hassle, I'm not stopping you from using Windows, though I will point out their unethical actions, especially in Windows 10.

If you do decide to go with Linux (dual boot or not), I'd recommend using Xubuntu, as you rarely have to use the command line, as well as having a light-weight desktop environment without the Unity spyware.

If you're interested in Linux, you could try virtualization first. Download virtualbox and a distribution of Linux and you essentially have a little sandbox to play around with without needing to do anything drastic. It wont be as fast as a proper install, but it would be a good test to see which distribution you like.

Dual booting is definitely the solution to your conundrum though, I dual boot too for when I need to do windows development. It seems like the time I'm spending over there is getting reduced though thanks to mono and Qt. If you only want windows for backing up your phone and such, it shouldn't take up that much hard drive space.

As for a distribution, I'd suggest the main version of Linux Mint. It's not great for machines with limited resources, but the mint guys are known for being pretty beginner friendly and their latest release is pretty solid in my opinion. There's also zorin OS which is as close to windows as you can get in terms of the UI, but it's actually Ubuntu under the covers.

Thought be prepared to work harder for it. Since the introduction of Windows 7, Microsoft got privy to people dual booting Linux as a secondary OS because of how much Vista sucked, so they made it far less "simple" to do in Windows 8+.

Only if running newer hardware with UEFI poisoning the boot loader. Even if so, it shouldn't be too much extra work to disable unless the OEM password locked it. For me, it was just mashing F12 on my laptop and selecting "unprotected bios mode". Because clearly the most vulnerable component of your system is the bloody boot loader and not the OS it's locked into.
