gaming I'm behind in Pokemon, thinking about coming out of retirement.

I do have a 3DS and purcahsed the gen 3 remake. So far things are ago. Now disclaimer, I am behind in terms of generations. The gen 1 2 and 3 remakes don't count, since I put hundreds of hours into Fire Red/Leaf Green and Heart Gold/Soul Silver.. My days ended when Gen 4 came out, and I wanted to love the game. But I was 14 when this was released. It wasn't about growing up and leaving the series behind. In high school, all these new concepts such as EV and IV training were becoming more mainstream. I know they were in Gen 3, but in Gen 4 it exploded and many people I knew took competing too far and made me divorce Pokemon. I even got Pokemon Black in college and hardly touched it.

I want to actually get back into the series now. But it seems I'm a walking relic. Nearly everyone in the fandom hates generation 1 and 2... And even hate generation 3( the second best in the series, generation 2 is god)

There's nothing wrong with the first three generations, even though the first was a broken mess in terms of software design. I prefer the earlier games to the current ones myself, it feels like more effort went into them. The second generation definitely did as they were supposed to be the last games of the series and all the problems gamefreak ran into during development.

If you want to get back into the series, go for the gold/silver remake. I think they were the best somewhat recent games gamefreak has done, they fixed a lot of issues with the original games and it has some fantastic post game content. ORAS and X and Y has no post game; emerald had more content than the bloody remakes. Wait for Z if you want to hop in the current Gen, you'll be glad you did.

I wouldn't say that everyone within the Pokémon fandom hates Gen 1 and Gen 2. Quite the opposite, in fact. What they hate is the "fans" who constantly bash on Gen 2 and so on just because they prefer their precious Gen 1 and use nostalgia as an excuse for it. But I digress.

If you want to go back into the series, then go for it. I mean, the series has grown so fast in the past decade, but that shouldn't stop you from playing it. Part of the appeal of the Pokémon franchise is discovering new things, whether it be a new Pokémon, new Gym Leaders or a new villainous team. You don't need to know every little detail about this series, as it would lose it's freshness and appeal if you did that. If you want to start out the series again, then I'd personally recommend you to start with Gen 5. But whatever generation you want to start out with is fine by me.

Yeah I played the remakes. And I am willing to give generation 4 a second chance, looking back my reasons for hating it back then are not justified now. Now the games I am going back into, the anime? No chance in hell. I stopped right after Pokemon Advanced and even Advanced is a tad stale by today's standards. I heard Black and White is amazing. Pokemon  breaking tradition and having a story that is less about the League Championship and more about the Pokemon and humans. Generation 1 and 2 I consider one big story. Even today, the climax of S/G/C is amazing because of the impact of generation 1. I can't separate gen 1 and 2, they're the same to me.

@@TheMarkz0ne,

Nothing wrong with the first three generations, I just find the newer ones to be better in terms of quality. Gen 4 was my very first Pokemon game, so I am a LITTLE nostalgic over it, so this is going to be biased, but you should give a whirl. The plot is very good, and the main villain is actually quite hard to spot for once. He's pretty cool, even if Team Galactic has shitty fashion sense. If you want to give Gen 4 a second chance, get Platinum and play it all the way through. It's a very well put-together game, and if you know nothing about the new pokemon it shouldn't be too hard to decipher their types/find ones you like. And there's a lot of Gen 1-3 Pokemon in the game, so some of shouldn't be Pokemon foreign to you.

When it comes to the anime, Black and White is terrible. Don't even bother, it's a mess. Gen 4 had a very good anime from my standards, and was very engaging to watch. I heard XY is better than B/W's anime, so it looks like they learned from their mistakes.

However, you were talking about the Black and White game, I am going to say this as a person who started with Gen 4, PLAY IT RIGHT NOW. It is amazing in terms of story, characters, and Pokemon; i'll defend it hell and back, it is my favorite Pokemon game. The original B/W has a region full of new Pokemon/only gen 5 pokemon, so it is rather overwhelming for someone who is trying to get back in as there are no old pokemon, but you should still play it. I'd suggest it after you give Gen 4 a second chance. It also has sequels, B2/W2, both of which are better than the original B/W in terms of gameplay, but the original has a better plot by far. B2/W2 also has old pokemon, unlike B/W, which I liked. If you thought the climax of G/S/C was good, you'll probably love the climax of B/W.

TL;DR: Get Pokemon Platinum if you want to give Gen 4 a whirl, after that go and play Pokemon Black/Pokemon White (whichever legendary you like better), then move onto the sequels.

Thanks! And yes I read everything. I am currently focusing on ORAS right now. My old Pokemon save states from fire red and heart gold are gone sadly. So it's like starting fresh. However, my Ruby and Sapphire saves are still intact and have tons of Pokemon from eyars ago. I know the game rules haven't changed too much. And I'm aware you can't just spam OP attacks like in the old days. It's great if you started with Gen 4. Because I'm not spoiled. Was I around when Pokemon started? Yes. I played Red and Blue. Gold and Silver are some of the best video games ever made. And R/S/E are what I consider my peak with Pokemon( in my opinion, gen 3 has less bad Pokemon, every gen has their share of bad Pokemon) . I'm not a nostalgia whore who will look down on people who got into the series late.

@@TheMarkz0ne,

Maingame, you can of course spam overpowered attacks like in the old days. You can literally breeze through any Pokemon game, new or old, if you have a high level pokemon that has a lot of supereffective attacks. I soloed a game with a Tropius in B2/W2 for gods sake.

I'm glad that you're not a nostalgia person who got into the series late, and it's great that you played Gen 3 and respect those who started with older generations. Even though Gen 4 can hardly be considered 'new', it was made 8 years ago. And i'm glad that you're making progress on ORAS, it's a great remake. It has literally one flaw tfw no frontier, and that flaw really isn't important in the long run.

But seriously, when you're done with ORAS, you should give Platinum and Gen 5 a second chance. You shouldn't knock something before you tried it all the way. How far are you on ORAS?

I have nostalgia for the old Pokemon. My first games were R/B/Y. However I'm aware that the older games were simplistic because they were the first entries. I am doing good in my ORAS run. My team isn't finalized yet, haven't beat Flannery yet, didn't even bother walking in the gym. My team

Combusken( with a timid nature) lv 30

Aron lv 23/ a metal coat I got when I catched Skarmory.

Kirlia lv 20

Nuzleaf lv 26 w/miracle seed

Mightyena level 23

No 6th slot yet. I do have a Skarmory I want to make OP. But I am looking for a great water Pokemon to add. When I play the games I have trouble getting a team that I deem balanced. I don't like to have 3 of one type in my teams.

@@TheMarkz0ne,

In ORAS, if you want a decent water type, go for a Milotic, it's far easier getting one now than in the past. Go to Route 119, surf, and go under the bridge. There is a 100% chance that you're going to fish up a Feebas using any rod. Then just fit it a shitload of pokéblocks until that thing is the most beautiful thing since Lilina getting a speed level up in Fire Emblem. Level it up once, boom, you have a sparkling, gorgeous, contest-ready, water-type Milotic at ready.

Feebas pissed me off in this game. I busted by butt getting just 2 Feebas in the original game. This game they're pathetically easy to capture. I think I'm to early in the game to get him yet. Or instead I could just power through Flannery because she isn't hard anyways.

@@TheMarkz0ne,

I thought Flannery was pretty difficult, but I picked Sceptile and my team at the time were so weak to fire types since I didn't have any water types (My team was a Mawile, Grovyle, Gallade, Metang).

Honestly, the most disappointing thing was how easy they made the psychic type gym, if it's even a flaw. The only pokemon they have are Solrock and Lunatone which have been severely nerfed. I destroyed both of them in one turn (MAWILE REACTING TO MEGA RING! MAWILE USED SUCKER PUNCH, IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE! GALLADE USED CLOSE COMBAT, IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE! GYM BADGE GET!). Compared to Emerald in which I was stuck at them for months, it's both a savior and a disappointment how nerfed the twins got.

I was really happy about Feebas being easier to capture this time around, because back in Emerald I wasted hours of my life on trying to catch one Feebas. So glad it's easier. The psychic gym leaders I don't appreciate the nerf because it wasn't grinding for the sake of grinding, it was actual difficulty, though I would've appreciated maybe a few level downs for a few pokemon and one or two moveset changes. Not get rid of 2/3/4 pokemon and make Lunatone and Solrock so frail they can faint in one turn.

Really?

I think most people would say the first three gens are the best, at least I would anyway.  :twi:  Gen 2 is awesome because it's twice as long as all the other games.

You should totally get back into pokemon, I really want to, but can't afford a 3Ds right now. If you haven't played gen 4, I'd recommend pokemon platinum because that is a great game too. Haven't played black or white but I heard those are good as well.
