Ok, so in RWBY each character has some emblem they are associated with, Example: Ruby Rose has a flaming rose.

And as we all know ponies have cutie marks (emblems) they are associated with.

So I ask you, is this coincidence? I think not.

Yes, coincidence.

 

The idea of people and groups being represented by unique emblems has been around as long as humankind.

Off the top of my head, we have native american spirit animals, medieval heraldry, military unit nicknames, sports mascots, and, more recently, online avatars and personas.

They do the same thing in Care Bears and Sgt. Frog as well. It's not uncommon.
