Are lessons at the end of episodes dead?

Obviously every episode still has a moral, but it seems now that moral is for the viewer to figure out for him/herself rather than be recited by one of the characters at the end of each episode. Was there any episodes with the journal in season 5?

No, there weren't any episodes with the journal in Season 5. The characters don't recite the moral at the end of each episode anymore.

And why should they? I think it's better if they leave the moral for the viewers to figure out by themselves.

Still hoping for an episode where they bring back "Journal Entries" in some way only for it to be something incredibly mundane and dumb like "Lightning Dust is a poopyhead" or "fuck the DMV(horse equivalent" or something.

Perhaps it could be explained as the show ageing with its viewers; after all, the children this show is largely aimed at are five years older now than they were when the show started, so perhaps the show's writers are aiming to grow the show to support a slowly-maturing target audience while still involving new young children? Just a thought, not sure if it really makes sense in context.

I am glad the morals at the end is gone. I think the morals of these episodes are easy to figure out by themselves and don't need a letter or journal entry at the end.

Aye, it did feel quite often like it was stating the damned obvious.

Morals still exist, but they're not so spelled out anymore. By removing the journal/friendship lesson, you can weave the moral into the script more subtly, and the approach comes out more naturally. Several episodes last season were aided by their subtlety, including Amending Fences, Slice of Life, Crusaders of the Lost Mark, and The Cutie Re-Mark.

They wouldn't really be able to have lessons at the end of the episode anymore. Like people are saying, they might think that the lessons aren't needed. Twilight is a princess, by the way - not a student. Who would she write to? The other ponies aren't Celetia's students, and as it happens, they seem to havve learned to overcome their problems - even if they had something to tell Celestia about what they learned, Twilight could probably just tell her.

Yeah, you raise a good point; There's not much use for it with Twilight being the Princess of Friendship; the responsibility's been handed over to her from Celestia.

The others wrote to her in S2, remember?

The morals of the show are still fully alive and well, but the silly explanations at the end of the episode that summarize said moral? Those are seemingly dead and gone, and to me, good riddance. I never really liked those explanations. I would rather see the morals be told throughout the episode in a subtle manner instead of being told to everyone outright .

Agreed with the episode's moral no longer being stated outright at the end of the episode. It certainly feels a lot more natural to have the episode's moral be a prominent point of focus and having the characters work through the problem they find themselves in and discover what they need to learn.

Although I think season 5 had the moral still outright stated around the beginning of The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows.

Morals of the show are still there, but not shown in a OBVIOUS way like it was back then in Season 1 and 2 . The morals feel more natural to be understood in general if you pay attention to the episode for the least now.

I like the more subtle telling of morals that leave us to figure it out, instead of summarizing it at the end of the episode. Still, even though Twilight's a Princess, there are still PLENTY to learn.

While I agree that not hitting the viewers over the head with the morals is a good thing most of the time, there are a few episodes where the message is really hard to find. For example, I'm still not sure what the moral of "The Lost Treasure of Griffinstone" is supposed to be. The best I can come up with is "friends are good", but that's a bit too obvious, not to mention that the entire show is constantly telling you that already.

To be honest, I kind of like there not being enforced messages. Its possible to have good stories without forcing a lesson after all. Its kind of one thing that I like about the comics, they're free to make comic plots without forcing a lesson in.
