gaming Phantom Squad to Take Down PSN/Xbox Live

I'll put ReviewTech's video on the subject here. FOREWARNING IT CONTAINS FALLOUT 4 FOOTAGE FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO SPOIL THE GAME:

So hacker group Phantom Squad who apparently have been formed from members of Lizard Squad have issued the threat that they intend to take down PSN and Xbox Live this year once again on Christmas. Last year, Lizard Squad did so with a DDoS attack. They claim it is for the consumers and that they believe if people are paying for the service it should be better protected and such. Well they are holding up on their threats from last year and intend to test if Sony and Microsoft improved their servers this year.

While I can agree that I too question "what are we paying $50/60 for?" if it can't even be protected from a simple DDoS attack, but at the same time this is not going to solve anything. All this will really accomplish is making a ton of kids sad on Christmas that their new games can't be played. You have kids for the FIRST time getting these systems, some of them didn't have the last gen system. They can't even make an account which means they can't play at all if you do this crap. All Sony and Microsoft are going to do is wait until you finally stop the next day or so because it's not worth investing in more infrastructure to prevent a once a year DDoS attack which is NO THREAT TO SECURITY AT ALL.

If these are their intentions then I would be okay with them doing it. It may not make Sony or Microsoft change but it will at least continue to show off what terrible companies they are.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

The thing is though: it isn't showing anyone anything. DDoS attacks are not really hard to do. Anyone can do them with little hacking knowledge. It doesn't prove their networks aren't strong enough, and they definitely aren't doing it for gamers. They are doing it to feel important. All this is going to do is make people who already owned the consoles to just play single player for a day or two and prevent little kids who just got the console from making an account and thus playing their games at all.

THEY TRY, THEY DIE.

That's all I gotta say.

I don't think Phantom Squad even exists. What I mean is, it's not a group of people doing this on a regular basis or whatever, it's just some guy/guys using Lizard Squad's "Lizard Stresser" service just like it was for a few months ago and then he or they make up a name to get some fame. Some friends from the uk paid to use Lizard Stresser on xbl and they got themselves arrested cause they didn't use vpns and bragged about the attack on twitter. Way to go.

I say let them. They can enjoy their prison time when they get caught.

Like that one Lizard Squad member who got convicted of over 50,000 counts of Cyber-terrorism and only got 2 years of prison time and a government job :l

If anything I think they need to be taken more seriously. Sony and Microsoft needs to up the ante on their security if their services can taken down by a mere DDoS attack

Yeah....there was that. Which I found that to be rather ridiculous. Not only does security need to be increased, but also, I think means to find these people needs to be heightened.

They've already taken down Xbox Live yesterday and they say they'll threaten to take down PSN for up to a week. They're just ruining everyone else's happiness and there will be a lot of unhappy kids on Christmas Day. Disgusting hackers, they say they're doing it for the consumers because we're paying them and they have unstable security but why target the Christmas holidays? They just want to ruin it for gamers from the sounds of it.

I just bought One Piece Pirate Warriors 3, i might also buy Tales of Zestiria and Omega Quintet. I still have Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3, Persona 4 Golden and Sword Art Online Lost Song to finish. They can hack PSN, i'll just be playing all my games offline :)

Its probably not going to happen. We seen what happened with the lizard squad if that's their group name.

Ummm... Lizard Squad delivered on their promise last year so what's your point there?

Lizard Squad didn't. The truth is the FBI don't give a damn about game system networks being taken down.

  • 3 weeks later...

PSN was hacked for most of yesterday. I'm not sure if it was Lizard or Phantom squads doing but Sony are extending Playstation Plus memberships for everyone which is nice of them. :)

I'm okay with that, but what I really wish is that they would get better protection in the first place.

A shame they can't even lay a finger on Steam or even Nintendo because they know Steam/Nintendo will catch them single-handedly. Sony and Microsoft really needs to work on security measures, however...
