Djent (Metal Style/Subgenre)

Recommended Posts

"Djent" is a subgenre of Heavy Metal characterized by a low-pitched, palm-muted guitar sound. The word "Djent" is onomatopoeia for this sound. (This was paraphrased from Wikipedia.)

If you don't know what Djent sounds like, watch the first ten or so seconds of this video. It's the "chugging" guitar sound.

The sound, or genre (if it can be called that) is a bit controversial.

Some people don't like the term, others don't like the sound.

I noticed it's a bit difficult to find a Djent tutorial on YouTube because so many parody videos exist that make fun of Djent.

I think the name is dumb, but I don't know what else to call it. I also think it shouldn't be considered a subgenre because it's essentially just another way to strum a chord. As to how I like the actual sound: It's good in moderation, but too much of it gets boring quickly.

What are all of your thoughts on Djent?

I think it should be a subgenre, or at least a subsub genre of progressive or tech metal, since it sounds so different.

You can thank these guys for essentially inventing it.

My opinion on Djent is that I personally love it, but like you said everything is good in moderation...

well except for Slayer they're good whenever.

I for myself think that Djent is an interesting style of Metal music.

I do not think the genre is only full of chugs and bores, in opposition of that, I would say that the music is really technical and interesting.

Here are some bands that I like that would be or are partially classified under this musical style:

  • Meshuggah (100% Djent as they invented it)

  • Gojira (They have slowly but surely induced Djent elements in their music in the course of their 5 studio albums)

  • Strapping Young Lad (Devin Townsend cited Meshuggah as an influence and the album Alien is full of that vibe, so go check that one out)

Skeksis (From Alien):

  • Scarve (You will like them if you like S.Y.L. They also got Fredrik Thordendal of Meshuggah to make a solo on the song Asphyxiate)

Irradient (Full Album):

  • In-Quest (Their two last album: "Made Out of Negative Matter" and "Chapter IIX: The Odyssey Of Eternity" is as much Djent they went)

Mind Over Matter (From Made Out of Negative Matter):

  • Fear Factory

Soul Hacker (From Genexus):

  • Revocation (They have some Djent in their 7 Stringed Guitar Era (The era of these followings releases: Teratogenesis, Revocation and Deathless) but they were mostly playing some Technical Thrash/Death Metal)

Labyrinth of Eyes (From Deathless):

  • Hacride (Gojira-like French band)
  • Azgard (A Russian Djent band that gets classified under the Deathcore genre, but I don't hear much DC in them)

At the time I wrote the OP, I was mostly familiar with parody videos of someone playing open strings on a downtuned guitar along with blast beats as "Djent." I'm listening to the Meshuggah track and I can hear a lot of complex playing that sounds "Djenty."

I don't really like Meshuggah's style (screaming and the like,) but I can respect them for their musicianship.
