CastletonSnob 3,089 January 12, 2016 Share January 12, 2016 I noticed that the Royal Guard always gets destroyed when facing a villain or threat. Why do you think this is?Would you like an episode where the Royal Guard are able to solve a problem on their own?
Mentis Soliloquy 3,029 January 12, 2016 Share January 12, 2016 yeah this annoys me and would love to see and episode along this line would be nice to watch. on a side note see here: on some thoughts of my own on the subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RhTC_MM_ik PonyvilleLive! Kapitan zur See Hans (Daz) 883 January 12, 2016 Share January 12, 2016 Just like any other movie or show, make the non-main characters incompetent. Example being Stormtroopers pre-TFA in Star Wars, if they were to perform as expected then Ep IV and on would have been totally different. Would love to see the Royal Guard able to perform their duties without being overwhelmed within minutes of a problem occurring.

I mean I get the whole regrouping bit, but out of context that kills me.

It's just HILARIOUSLY silly watching a screaming nut with a gun chase half a dozen uniformed soldiers (also with guns) down a hallway! 1 Check out my artwork any time: http://shadobabe.deviantart.com/ "OMG; You are such a troll. Metemponychosis 1,262 January 12, 2016 Share January 12, 2016 In my opinion, any conversation about the Royal Guard goes like I think it goes about Celestia: they look useless because the writers don't figure out a way to insert them in a story that doesn't require them to be useless. I don't think that "nameless guard #31" starring in an episode would be a good idea, but I can imagine them working, doing what they are supposed to be doing as guards, to enable another character to do something. Specially in one of those "epic" season openers or finales. 1 https://www.fimfiction.net/user/32864/Metemponychosis For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out. PoisonClaw 8,174 January 12, 2016 Share January 12, 2016 (edited) Unfortunately, the Royal Guards are more for show than anything. Keep in mind that outside of occasionally guarding events like the Winderbolts derby, their primary job appears to be to protect the Princesses. Except... that should a threat ever arise that could potential cause harm to said Princesses, the guard are vastly outclassed. Like, Shining can cast a city sized shield, but what were they going to do against Tirek? It's a shame though, cause I would love to see them actually do something. Yeah, we saw them fighting in the alternate Sombra future, but that seemed to be proving rather ineffective and silly. An early draft for Slice of Life would have had them just standing around and joking about the Princesses, which I would have liked. No idea why they would be in Ponyville, but that's besides the point. PacificGreen 1,163 January 13, 2016 Share January 13, 2016 I just thought after reading OP's post: It would be amazing if they made an episode about the royal guards. Involving the Mane Six in some way, of course. Steve Piranha 29,496 January 13, 2016 Share January 13, 2016 I believe it's for the same reason Celly is seemingly incompetent in face of danger: The show wants to keep the spotlight to the Mane6 Sig by Discords
vampireponyprince 185 January 13, 2016 Share January 13, 2016 I feel like the Royal Gaurd has become like a suit of armor once used to solve issues and protect but now just an intricate decoration/formality Seeing an episode with the royal guard solving an issue would deffinitely be something nice to see
El Duderino 881 January 13, 2016 Share January 13, 2016 I'm sure they solve their own problems all the time. You just don't see it because, well, the show is not about them. 1 My ponysona/OC: https://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/treble-r8882 Check out my Soundcloud too: https://soundcloud.com/colton-paul-crawford DeviantArt: http://scottish-bastard.deviantart.com/
Number62 1,267 January 13, 2016 Share January 13, 2016 Same reason Princess Celestia, and other princesses except Twilight to a degree, doesn't get to do anything. I wouldn't mind an episode or a few that made the guards a little more important to the story.
Once In A Blue Moon 896 January 13, 2016 Share January 13, 2016 They seemed to be able to hold their own in 'The Cutie Re-Mark' crystal empire war alternative universe - and then they were fighting against (apparently) better armoured opponents. Claiming that you are good at your job in an alternative universe isn't particularly impressive though (it certainly never worked for me in interviews) and as a military force they do seem kind of useless - villains don't seem to be put off by them, so they often fail in the deterrence role, and they never seem to be able to fight off threats either. They could be little more than a glorified police force after so many years of peace, in which case they might be doing a good job at crime prevention and suchlike. Whisper, The City of Darkness; Carto Sketch - The Dark Millennium Participating in this RP can be agonizing sometimes.
