Hasbro's testing the water with Lyra x BonBon

I think they're shipping it as hard as they can without really saying so that it takes the floor under the angry Christian mothers who would surely otherwise sue. Other shows like Avatar: Legend of Korra have done it. As the above poster said, LPS did it, too.

It would make me really really happy if it ever was confirmed, but probably not. Still, I get so excited about it because its very rare that lesbian couples are ever shown in a nonsexual light. I'm happy because this can be innocent love. Because there's actually a chance that lesbianism will no longer be so associated with PornHub. Just an innocent couple. That's what I want.

Why are people sayin' things like, '' it is too risky '' '' they can get away with it since x y z '' what do people actually think is gonna happen? x)  We live in the 21st century not the 20th century where these things may have not been so public, but now it is part of every day western life. If tomorrow they released an episode showing these two without a shadow of a doubt in a relationship the backlash would be so little it wouldn't even matter :D

We live in our own definition of the 21st century. For others it's a terrifying dissolving of core values and over-blown minority entitlement made manifest by mainstream apologists and political correctness fear.

Over the top I know.

Also remember there is a middle ground that is often more powerfully heard; the rantings of an evangelical are frequently ignored, but there are a lot of people who might be tentatively supportive of - for example - same-sex marriage, in an 'each to their own' way, but get very angry when they perceive things to be 'forced' upon them - or especially - their children (despite the fact they can vet the toys and/or media their children consume).

I think they could do it in the US and other 'western' countries, my main previous point was more to do with their emerging markets.

China only took homosexuality off their list of mental illnesses in 2001 and discrimination against non-straight persons is still not illegal.

India is still in the review process of legalisation.

Japan, though never criminalised homosexual behaviour in the way most other countries have, legal protection is haphazard at best and is generally a local issue. It's only just being discussed in politics and culturally, it's still seen as something people 'grow out of' while discovering their sexuality in their teens - carrying it into adulthood is sometimes seen as an indication of immaturity.

Still, I get so excited about it because its very rare that lesbian couples are ever shown in a nonsexual light.

True. The term 'homosexual' doesn't exactly help.

But then you could ask of the depictions of the other couples in the show if they are really 'heterosexual'. Hetero-romantic might be more fitting. The depiction of sexual interest in children's media is still a taboo, something to be hidden, rather than 'something that exists that you may like in the future when your body and mind go through some changes'.

But then you can spend an entire career exploring the concept of Western Sex Negativity.

If ghey were "testing the waters" as you say they would've shown them smooching, like the other couples

This is exactly why I left the brony fandom and why I won't be watching season 6.

Hasbro and DHX have crossed the line with these two female characters, and it started with Rainbow Rocks. Their "hints" have gone from subtle to overt as they've inched closer and closer to full-blown lesbianism.

Now apparently those two females (who I need not name) are each other's "special somepony" on Hearts and Hooves Day, which is the Equestrian equivalent of a Valentine on Valentine's Day.

In real life, since when are "best friends" of the same sex each other's Valentines? Only if they're also homosexuals.

We are living in the End Times, for sure, so Hasbro's LGBT propaganda doesn't surprise me. In these final days before God pours out His wrath upon this wicked world, we are to expect darkness like this to appear even in cartoons for children. But if Hasbro thinks for one second that they're going to get away with corrupting the youth and seducing adults, they're in for a BIG surprise when they stand before God on Judgment Day.

Valentines day is exclsively for romantic love, and already established couples?

Welp, screw the love you have for friends, huh? Guess they can get turds instead of chocolate.

Did you just came here to say that?

I am not here to disrespect you, but this seems rather pointless. It's okay if you don't like it anymore, but don't come here and tell others that they shouldn't.

Good luck with your future.

Lyra and Bon Bon is one of the many ships I have interest in, and seeing as Hasbro presented them in that way, I can say that I am curious in how many people and bronies alike with react :)

Calling both of these out. Really, guys? And this is coming from a Russian who's damn sick of the Tumblrite LBGT community. ಠ_ಠ

If they are not sexualising them and its simply a relationship like any other, why can they not be allowed on TV? What's your problem with entertainment showing other options than your own preference? By this we can remove ethnic minorities from TV, too.

SMH, there's nothing wrong with being "homosexual". Preach your end times all you want like they've been doing the past 2000 years. We're always in the end times theoretically. Get on with the 21st century. And yeah, they are getting away with corrupting the youth into thinking homosexuality is equally valid like how plenty of television did the same with africans and latinos in the 70s and 80s. You know why? Because humanity's human rights are changing. And because we realised its senseless to be cocks about stupid things like this

"Saint Valentine (Latin: Valentinius), officially Saint Valentine of Terni,[2] is a widely recognized third-century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love."

"Courtly love (or fin'amor in Occitan) was a medieval European literary conception of love that emphasized nobility and chivalry. Medieval literature is filled with examples of knights setting out on adventures and performing various services for ladies because of their "courtly love".

So yeah, Saint Valentines day is a day for romantic love.

But why does it mean that friendship means nothing? July 30 is international friendship day, so it dosen't mean that friendship is worthless.

Doubtful. Testing the waters for a kids show of the Hasbro variety has rarely gone to even a basic kiss level, if you look at Shining Armor and Cadence. I'd say what they're doing now counts. While you're right that Valentine's day is not only for couples, in the traditional media which we've come to live our life, its associated entirely with couples in the same way pink is associated with girls toys. It doesn't have to be. There are plenty of boy toys that are pink, ironically. But because we've come to expect it, that's what the media presents it as. Besides, look at the other couples in the first image of the OP. All the others are couples. I'd say its substantially harder to not admit that its up for debate.

The text for the image in the op that Hasbro put up says this:

" Celebrate your special somepony on Hearts and Hooves Day whether it’s the one you love, or simply your best friend! — Lyra Heartstrings and Sweetie Drops"

This makes is clear they're not special someponies, but best friends. And BFF's can also be your non romantic significant other, if they're all you got

How many times have the ane 6 called each other "best friends"? (Even in the opening song!) Let's assume they're all lesbians, too, huh?

Are you really that afraid of the fact, that Lyra and Bon Bon, might be Lesbians?

The Mane 6 is a very bad example, because the way Lyra and Bon Bon act with each other, dosen't feel like how the Mane 6 act with each other.

I mean, they even dream of each other.

There's some blatant hate speech going on in this thread. I mean, replace "gay" with "Muslim" or whatever. The mods need to crackdown around here.

Anyway, it's this idea that representing different kinds of life should merit such an overreaction is why it's so hard for it to happen in television, especially children's shows like MLP. Despite children probably gaining something from knowledge, many would rather they remain in ignorance and are proud of it. Hasbro is a company and doesn't want to take a great risk in upsetting the main consumer base and I don't blame them really. If I owned it, things would be different perhaps but I don't.

It's really hard to tell watching these characters together whether the people making this show are actually trying to push the envelope or if they're just queer-baiting and fan-baiting. I would really like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and believe that they want these two to be together though. At this point, there's no reason they couldn't move in that direction, since there's an obvious romantic potential between Lyra and Bon Bon. As time goes on, LGBT+ representation in children's media is receiving less and less pushback, so who knows? Maybe somewhere in the next season they'll finally feel ready to take that chance. Until then, I'll just be over here, shipping quietly to myself...

We've come a long way though. If this were the fifties Hasbro would of been torched to the ground for even the "suggestive" material, cause some religous folk like to roll that way. Hell that's what happened to Comics during that time.

Comic-Book-Burning.jpg

The fact that Hasbro, a behemoth company whom has built its business models on segregating "boy toys" from "girl toys" is branching out and testing the waters is really something to take note of. Some will decry that they aren't doing it "fast enough" but Like someone else on this particular thread said "companies like this are like Glaciers, they move very slowly"

As much as religious extremists would like to stifle the freedom and representation of Lgbt people, we've made some serious ground. Hell there are plenty of religious people that actually see how silly being against Lgbt people really is, that's a win if I ever saw one.

As much as I like Lyra and Bon Bon, they both kinda need character development. Hasbro needs to make the relationship significant enough to justify making them a couple. And what are the odds of that happening? Not even most established characters would have enough of reason to get hitched.

It's rather unfortunate, but subtle hints are enough.
