What is it about the show that made us all become a brony?

In my time of watching the show, I've heard many reasons as to why the show is so popular, why it brought in the unexpected audience of male viewers and how it has turned into the gigantic fandom that it is today.

So what is it about the show that made you fall in love with it and keep coming back for more?

For me it has to be how I could almost see the struggles that I usually face in real life from Fluttershy most of all, but also how the animation took me by surprise when I first started watching.. It wasn't what I was expecting.

Lot's of reasons. Originally I watched the first two episodes and I just found it to be charming, for whatever reason. But as I watched more I got hooked on it. I just adored almost everything about it, from the visuals to the songs, to the humor and morals, and especially, most important of all...The characters. I love the characters in this show to death, flaws and all. People can call them stereotypical all they want, they're some of my favorite fictional characters ever, and I find them a billion times more likable than the majority of characters I've seen.

Also, the fandom too. I found this all at a pretty miserable time in my life, and for a long while, ponies were literally the only thing cheering me up when I was down.

charming, well designed, good sound design, characters that are well rounded and you would love to follow, amazing voice actors and this cartoon came out at the end of the cartoon drought. I mean with that that there weren't many (good) cartoons on so people where hungry for new ones and people became interested and well combine that with all what was said above and the media atention and here we are.

I'm sure everyone has their own reason. :)

Mine? I suppose it was just a good show that had fun characters and pretty art. The message in the show spoke to me, and drew me closer to it. And now I'm a brony. :)

There are very, very few shows I truly love. I can think of three, and Mlp;FiM is one of them. :P

I've love the show for what it is, the amazing characters, settings, stories and rich life lessons. I didn't know a great show can exist for the age demographic consisting of 3-12 year old girls. I was truly surprised.

I feel the same way man. When I first heard about the show and that there was an adult following of it I thought it was completely ridiculous.. But when I gave it a chance out of complete boredom, I never looked back afterwards. I'm convinced that MLP wouldn't have had 6 seasons if it wasn't for us.

Preach it my brotha ! MLP was only going to have 3 seasons if it weren't for its immense popularity. I remember in a video interview with MA Larson where he stated that he originally wrote Magical Mystery Cure as the Series Finale, but had to make tons of edits and changes when he found out that the show was renewed for a 4th season.

I've been watching FIM for nearly 4 years and it still continues to pull me in even to this day! The reason is quite simple actually. Yes the rise of the Brony fandom and its rather "unique" demographic of fans caught my attention, but it was the show itself that sealed the deal for me. Excellent storytelling, beautiful animation, catchy songs, and its wide appeal to audiences of all ages are just some of the reasons that drew me in  ^_^

I think it has to be us as a community that has kept me interested to be honest, especially these forums. I probably would have just lost interest entirely after a while if it wasn't for the fandom and all the people that I have met over the years.

@@AtomicStone, I liked the backstory about the Two Sisters.  Next I liked the bonding between the Mane Six and particularly Twiligh. I liked someht of the stuff that could be inferred about Celestia and finally, I liked the world where they lived and the idea of magical ponies that made the world "go 'round". In the end, i tought it was a visually pleasant cartoon and I really liked the friendship theme.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

I made a post in another thread about my thoughts on the show.

I do enjoy the show as a whole, but I'll unfortunately always remember this show as too much wasted potential. I was initially drawn into the show because I thought it'd be able to build a deep and interesting lore of this MLP universe, but after 5 seasons and over 100 episodes (i.e. too many opportunities and too much time) of not doing that or poor attempts to do so, I've given up in that regard.

There's nothing wrong with slice of life stories, of course. It's just that the creative team shouldn't have mentioned interesting aspects of that world such as magical artifacts, powerful users of magic, or long-living sorceresses who also rule the kingdom.

To expand on this a little, I didn't care much for the older cartoons mostly because of the visuals not aging well and the wooden voice-acting, neither of which are problems on this show. Unfortunately, the more action-adventure-ish stories haven't impressed me (and I prefer action-adventure stories over slice-of-life), and I've given up on the attempts for lore-building. If nothing else, it's a fun show with a variety of characters that can help tell a variety of stories.

Lighthearted, cute characters and setting. Simplified art, simplified yet not too simplified that it's braindead plot and story occasionally they do throw a curveball which is appreciated. Something to watch that isn't too edgy, serious, or satirical. The mane six were quite an item to me due to how they exaggerated a type of character and how they clashed with one another but that time is sort of passed and I just see what's left to show.
