Funny you ask me that, because for the longest time I couldn't find any markings on it, right? So I took it to two double reed specialists and they have no idea. One of the guys guessed it was from a Chinese manufacturing company... Shanghai? I'm probably spelling that wrong, but that's the only indication I have. If it's not, it's a complete mystery lol.

Oh, I see, so it's probably one of those super-cheap brands... Oh well, you've got yourself a free bassoon either way, right? I'd have taken it. =P

Actually it's not one of those types, which is what the same guy said. It seems like it's from an actual Chinese music company that's not just trying to pump out products, lol and it does fetch a lot. I just don't know what to sell it as.

Maybe I should just learn it.

Oh, I see. My mistake, of course there are real companies over there.

You definitely should! It's more fun than the clarinet... Or that was my experience, anyway.

Drums, bass (upright and electric), cello, piano and marimbas. Trying to learn guitar. All of my knowledge of music theory comes from my only formal training for the piano, though i haven't touched a keyboard in ages.

Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?

I can play piano and I tried to self teach guitar but couldn't keep my callouses on my fingertips. Got too painful.

As a teacher, what's your opinion on playing by memorization versus sight reading? I struggle to be able to sight read fast enough, so I invariably end up memorizing faster than I can sight read. I think it hinders my ability to feel confident in my playing ability since I can't really pick up a new piece and play it immediately. It's always a slow memorization process.

Don't get yourself down. Learning to play any musical instrument will always be an uphill battle. I was taught to memorize first before being able to sight read. I feel that when you sight read, your mind is focusing on 2 things at once (looking at the sheets to see what's up ahead and looking at your fingers to make sure that you're keeping up). When you take the extra time and effort to sit down and memorize a song, you are really learning it from the inside and out. I'll give you an example:

  • Let's compare 2 different play-styles for Beethoven's classic Fur Elise, 1 student plays it sight-reading while another student plays it completely memorized.
  • The 1st student will get through the song yes, but their focus isn't exclusively on their fingers. They have to look up at the book to keep track of where they are and when to turn the page. They will end up playing the song with a lack of feeling and emotion.
  • The 2nd student on the other hand has no need to worry about losing their place in the song. They can focus exclusively on playing with feeling and passion. It's really hard to describe in words but I envy pianists who can play a complex piece without having to resource to sheet music :pinkie:

I know that memorizing songs is a pain, but I assure you that things will get better if you attack it with a positive attitude. Positive Pete over Negative Nancy I always say .

I've been playing the clarinet for many years, but I've also picked up the harmonica. It's kind of nice to have for those spur of the moment... moments. Like maybe a long bus ride or when stuck in a traffic jam. I tried the violin too, but despite how much I absolutely love its sounds, let's just say that actually playing it wasn't for me.

I've been a trombone player for 10 years now, from middle school to college band. No regrets about doing it.

I can also play the euphonium moderately well.

I'm thinking of trying a woodwind instrument next.

DO IT!

Any idea of which one, though?

The first instrument I learned back in 4th grade was the baritone. Throughout middle school I learned Tuba, bass, and trumpet. In high school I learned the sousaphone, trombone, the bass trombone, french horn, bugle, and percussion. Now in college, my primary instruments are the Tuba for symphonic band and orchestra, and the Bass Trombone for jazz band. Bass trombone is probably the most fun to play cause I have the range of a tuba through the trumpet. Sousaphone is also fun because I love marching band, but I have chronic back pain now from the years of field shows in high school...
