gaming Kingdom Hearts Unchained X

Stupid titles aside, I am... Pleasantly surprised how fun this little game is. Like It has "pay to win" elements in it, but they are not too terrible. I have to admit, when this was announced at E3 I was not excited for it at all, I thought it was going to be a Kingdom Hearts game that I passed on... I'm kind of glad my wife convinced me to download it... It's actually fun. The social elements are a bit weak at the moment, but it's a super fun game. Go around Disney worlds leveling up, collecting points to unlock stuff for your avatar all in chibi style.

What amazes me is Square Enix was able to HOLD BACK on cutscenes. Long drawn out cutscenes do not appear to be a feature. The cutscenes are short and sweet and you get back to the gameplay relatively fast for a J-RPG. It's essentially a turn based J-RPG with MMO "elements". Even more surprisingly it's actually relatively simple something that mobile games tend to forget when it comes to RPGs (seriously so many get overly complicated for such a limited platform) and for a Square Enix game. It's fun, it's straight forward and it's actually a competent port.

It's available on the play store and the Apple App Store. You can play with friends regardless of which version they have, which is super nice because in the early days of these mobile games if your friend had an iPhone and you had an Android you basically couldn't play together.

It's not too intensive either. Requiring only iOS 7 or higher, or Android 4.0.4, any device newer than 2013 should be able to run it with no issues. If you haven't tried it, you really should.

More or less gave up on the series after DDD came out.

Just got tired of KH3 taking forever to come out and finally give closure, along with spinoff after spinoff just making everything more convoluted and depressing.

Trust me, I know how you feel. I am still in the belief that KH3 doesn't exist and they just keep showing us tech demos in the hopes that it will appease everyone long enough for them to make the actual game.

However I will say that this is a pretty good casual play. You should give it a shot.

My complaints are solely with the overall storyline, not with the gameplay itself (except for the Forced Drops in DDD).

This is the only Kingdom Hearts game I will never in my life be able to play. I don't and will never have a device to play it on.

Luckily the cutscenes for the game (the only part I actually care about because I don't wanna miss out on any of the story in the series) will be available on 2.8 Prologue. I won't have to miss out before KH3 drops.

I suck at this game. I end up not getting the take out every enemy in one turn bonus the vast majority of the time. =/ I'm only at the beginning of the game, too. Just barely got to level 13.

Kingdom Hearts is one of the game series that I would like to try out, but find it to be quite a hassle to actually get invested in it.

Outside of the the first two games and the upcoming third game, their are countless different spin off titles that are scattered above many many different platforms, that in one way or another find some form of connection to the overall plot of the series.

With so many games required to play in order to be able to understand the convoluted storyline of franchise, including most of which aren't even on platforms that I actually own, I don't find it productive for me to actually try out the Kingdom Hearts series.

Which is a shame because it looked like something that I might actually like.

You don't have a phone? You can get a smartphone for like $50 these days.

I just started playing like 4 days ago. It's fun IMO so far. I was told there were boss raid type things, have any of you guys gotten that far?

Actually, they worked on this problem, if the storyline is what you want to keep up with. Between Kingdom Hearts 1.5, 2.5, and the upcoming 2.8, every single game will be available in at least movie form (the big games, KHI, II, BBS, and DDD playable) on the PS3/PS4... Well, problem being that you still have to own both a PS3 and PS4... But that's more Sony's fault than it is Square-Enix's. If they had just made the PS4 backwards compatible there would have been no problem.

Yeah I've murdered the hell out of like 20 now.

I'm like almost level 60 already.

Well since this game takes place before all the games, little to no prior knowledge is needed.

Actually it's Square Enix's fault. They make the call on what system to make the game on, not Sony. They didn't make the PS4 backwards compatible for many reasons but they had legitimate reasons. It was an unavoidable choice.

I have a cheap prepay phone that I don't have to put money into unless I actually use the minutes on it. I pay $25 every month and a half or so.

I have no actual use for a phone and I refuse to pay monthly for a service I'll very rarely ever use. Even at its cheapest I could triple my monthly cost on phone service. For what? A single phone call a month? One or two games I'll maybe play once and be done with for the rest of my life? I have other devices for my internet needs. I don't need or want a phone for that.

I was about to ask when this game fits into the series; thanks for answering before I asked!

I have almost the same story---I make calls on my flip-phone because with that, I only pay for what I actually use.  I did buy an iPhone SE anyway, though I didn't buy a plan for it---I bought it for games development.  It's basically a mini-iPad at this point, since it can still connect to WiFi, even if it can't make calls yet.

I dunno, should I try this out on my iPhone?  What are the controls like, and how many options do I have for how I build my character?

@@Key Sharkz, Wow dude, I only get to play at breakfast  when I'm at school so I haven't gotten that far. I'm on the snow white and the seven dwarves world (I can't remember the name right now).

if so, then why are there heartless? The heartless were created be Xehanort's experiments on the darkness in people's  hearts, and that happened after Birth by sleep... Unless I missed something in the story somewhere...

P.s. love the dave strider avatar!

Actually, he merely discovered natural Heartless and then created artificial ones based on them.

To add:

Heartless existed in the World of Darkness primarily until the Door To Darkness was thrust open by Xehanort. Any Heartless you see with the "Heartless Emblem" on them somewhere are the artificially created ones. Purebloods are pitch black with yellow eyes, such as the Darkside and Shadows.

But wasn't it Ansem the Wise that discovered and created them? Xehanort aggravated the problem later, I thought.

Well not to sway you, but just so you know, I work with phones for a living and you can literally just get like... A $60 Smartphone and pop your pre-paid SIM in and pay the exact same price you're paying now.

You have a decent amount of avatar customization and you unlock stuff throughout the game. The ONLY thing with the SE that I would worry about is with such a tiny screen the game make be hard to see, but I haven't tried it. Control wise it actually plays pretty well.

Is it a touch-here-and-your-character-walks-there kind of a control scheme?  Or is it one where there's a kind of a simulated d-pad?

Also, as far as customization goes, I didn't quite mean cosmetic customization---I mean more customization along the lines of "I'm specializing in magic" or "I'm specializing in defense" etc. etc.  Is there a talent system, or equippable items that boost some stats and not others?  Or do they have "decks" of abilities you can customize, like in BBS or 358/2 Days?

I haven't touched it in like a week. Tbh I got kinda bored of it. But then again I usually get bored of phone games after a little bit. I had more fun playing re:chain of memories and that's saying something cause I absolutely loathed the gameplay on there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Now that I'm playing this game regularly, I HATE the AP system. Obviously it was designed to lead us to spend real money on medals. *sigh*

I'll probably download and play this once I've beaten KH2 on the 2.5 remix. I've been dreading starting it because Roxas's world is so long and boring, so instead I've been trying to beat that damn Mysterious Figure in BBS.
