web Help with video streaming

Recommended Posts

I am planning on doing a video streaming event, but I know nothing but the basics on video streaming. I want to try starting an open mic night via video stream. My big issue is I don't know how I could switch between performers smoothly during the stream.

What would be the best way to switch between people during a stream?

What website do you think would be best for my purposes?

Any other information that would help?

Hi there @El Duderino,

I went ahead and moved your topic to a better section to get some help; Video Creative Resources.  :)

Ok, thanks. Sorry, I posted it where it was because I thought the creative resources was for pony related stuff.

Downlaod a program called OBS, create an account on picarto. Follow a tutorial on how to link OBS and Picarto, it is pretty easy. If you want multiple people to be heard on the stream then while streaming with OBS and getting your picarto set up, host a skype group call so everyone watching your stream can see your screen and hear the conversation.

Well, first of all you'll need a streaming program. I'd reccomend OBS studio. Both because it's a great program due to it's user friendly interface, and because there are plenty of YouTube tutorials to help setting up. https://obsproject.com/

Then you'll need a website to stream to. It depends what you'll be streaming. The two main streams are art and gaming. Art can be done via http://picarto.tv/and gaming can be done via http://twitch.tv/

If you want to stream anything else, there are other websites. But those are the main two. But what do you mean by switch between people? Did you plan to make a talk show type thing?

Thanks for the advice! I had an idea to host an open mic night, but over the web. People can sign up and they will get a certain amount of time on the live stream to perform, and people can watch it over live stream. I still have a lot of details I need to figure out (the idea is still in it's very early stages) but I figured however I do this, I need to know how to do the live stream part.

I'm not quite sure where you could stream that to. Perhaps connectcast.tv?

And as for switching between people, a quick but insecure way could be to put a certain tag in something such as omegle..

I think I may try use skype to switch between people, but that method may be a little clunky. I'll need to do a few private test runs before I launch the event. As for where to stream, I'm not sure yet, but I'm sure that's not too difficult a problem.

If you just plan to use voice, Discord would be a good idea. You could easily set up a server with a voice channel that has everyone muted by default, and you could simply unmute them when it's their turn.

That's a really good idea. It could be more of a podcast than a video stream.

True. Discord has no Video calling function, so it's use would limit you to a podcast.
