movies/tv Why was the original Pokemon Indigo anime so dark? Newer Pokemon is safe.

I was watching the original Pokemon anime on netflix.. Even though for some reason they don't have all the episodes. Does anyone remember when Ash and the gang sunk on the St Anne and almost died? Remember Sabrina turning Misty and Brock into dolls and making scary and disturbing faces? Remember that banned safari zone episode where the guy had a gun to Ash's head? Remember when Ash and Pikachu died and played around with Gengar, Haunter and Ghastly? See my point? I think Orange Island and Jhoto had darker episodes too, but most of the disturbing episodes where in the Kanto region. Even though I stopped watching the show after Advanced Battle... The newer episodes after Jhoto just became so tame and it's like you're watching a different show all together.

I was a fan of the original Pokemon indigo anime back in the day, and I don't remember those parts. Then again, it was the 4Kids English dub...

It wasn’t necessarily darker. They just did more different things back then. They took more risks. The new anime, it's the same plot, same jokes, same gags, same ideas, over and over and over.

Especially the movies. I cannot stand the new movies.

It's repetitive and groan-inducing to me. I only watch it because my brother loves it (and God bless. I like MLP, so I have no room to dictate what we watch).

Lucky for me, we own the original Indigo League, Orange Islands, and Johto League, with MOST of the uncensored episodes on DVD.

It doesn't really strike me as 'dark', but i guess it can be?

Personally i still like the anime dark or not though. It seems to entertain me for some reason, maybe nostalgia, since i used to be so into it when i crushed on ash lol

Aka "LadyPKchu".

I changed my name again cuz lately fluttershy has been more my favorite pony :3 I like her innocence, and I think I may get active in the fluttershy fan club. I really like a lot of the other main 6 too though.

I'm also a FlutterDash supporter.

I still love Korrina from pokemon a lot and plan on keeping my Korrina profile for now :P

I saw the anime before playing any of the games, so I was pretty uneasy when it came time for me to face Sabrina in Pokemon Yellow.

So you can understand my confusion and relief when the game version turned out to be pretty affable instead of a psychotic reality-warper.

Ahhhh, those were the days  :rarity: . Back in the day, Pokemon used to be what ponies are for me now  :twi: . Yeah, I remember when the anime was cool, it had tons of great episodes, and you never knew what to expect. One chapter, they are fighting a strong trainer with a different ideology, next they are sinking in a boat, next IS PIKACHU ABOUT TO FALL TO THE LAVA  . Also, the characters were good, and each character of the day usually had some squirk that made them stand out, and same goes for introducing pokemon. Nowadays, unless they are facing a gym leader, the evil team or the league, most episodes go like this: Ash and gang see a generic character of the day, they have a generic problem, lazy introduction to a new pokemon, team rocket attacks, they're sent flying, generic character's problem is solved, every one live happily ever after :unamused:

I haven't seen Pokemon Origins, but it looks good, or at least looks like it has the balls the anime used to have. Try the Pokemon Special manga also  :orly:
