Silanda 24 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Now I'm pretty new to this community so I might be a little off base here, but it seemed as if Hasbro were being given props for taking a laissez-faire attitude to the presence of FiM episodes on Youtube, and not having them removed. Not anymore it seems. Over the last few days I have noticed a number of episodes that have been removed due to copyright claims by Hasbro and, since they are from several different uploaders, it now seems like Hasbro has gone on the offensive and are being proactive with regards to takedowns. I suppose that's fair enough. It's their property and they are within their rights to do so, but given that for viewers outside of North America there are no legitimate options for purchasing the episodes at the moment, and that the show is being treated like crap by its TV licensors in some regions, this new attitude doesn't seem too fan friendly. Am I wrong, have they been doing this all along, does anyone else have any thoughts?

NavelColt 22,880 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 (edited) Cause you totally can't find pony episodes on two million other websites by typing in 'My Little Pony: FiM episodes on Google'. Eh, seems to me all companies do it. Not surprised. When I initially heard they weren't doing it I was already skeptical it was true, and if it was, how long it'd last. _Flitter 103 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 I haven't really noticed, you could say, as I torrented the episodes (I'm a terrible pony, I know). I don't really use Youtube for FiM except for the new episodes when they come out. Then I download 'em. But it doesn't sound so nice. IMO, if you're going to start with a certain attitude, you should try and stick to that. You can't change from laissez-faire to participative and whatnot. It just.. it's too much of a change. That's in my opinion. BUT it is theirs. They can do whatever the hay they want to do with it. I don't think it seems fair to non-NA fans though. :c 1 I waited all my life for this moment & I'm not going to let it slip by!
Nas 2,873 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 I thought Hasbro was ok with that, I think they said they saw it as "free advertisement"...or maybe that was the parody videos... Silanda 24 May 4, 2012 Author Share May 4, 2012 I thought Hasbro was ok with that, I think they said they saw it as "free advertisement". That was my impression as well but things look like they may be changing. It wouldn't bug me if it wasn't for the fact that Hasbro seem to be doing a pretty poor job with promoting such a good series outside of the US (well, in the UK at least), and leave us with absolutely no options other than to illegally download. Lily Sapphire 65 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Well yes, I think there should be some way of making episodes available to fans legally (helllloooooo, cash cow!), but for the time being, fans just have to 'resourceful'.....
LMW-YBC 102 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 (edited) I see why they would remove them, but for people out of the US (especially the UK), finding legal ways to watch/buy the show will be difficult. It would also make Hasbro look like bad guys. They were OK with the sharing of episodes at first, but now they decide to take action about 1-and-a-half years after the show first aired. Why do they pick now to take action towards the uploading of FiM episodes? That's the million dollar question IMO. Evilshy 5,090 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Copyright cases are heavily based on precedents. If somebody tried to steal MLP, they could point at us and say "hey, Hasbro didn't care when they got episodes for free, why are we different?" Basically, Hasbro has to be able to show that they protect their copyrights. 1 Signature now 99% less edgy!
Finesthour 7,287 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Well, why watch for free when you can support the show we love? If they are always free, then hasbro makes no profit from the show. (Toys not included)

Ezynell 2,037 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Am I wrong, have they been doing this all along, does anyone else have any thoughts? Yea, they've been doing it for a while now. But I'm pretty sure that even if most of them wanted to leave it up, they couldn't do it due to their sponsors, contractors, etc. that are legally binding them where they stand. Plus, like others have said, they make no profit from YouTube views, and even though it does expand their fanbase, they don't gain anything from an expanded fanbase that doesn't watch their channel. LowfatEnvelope 335 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 I'm kinda waiting for a dvd set of the seasons before i buy them, as i'd MUCH rather have a physical set of the episodes than buy them all off of itunes. I was glad when they added Season 1 to netflix though, as i use it. Maybe they're just whittling the number of MLP episodes on Youtube down so they're a bit harder to find, as to make it more of an inconvenience to watch them if you're not paying for them. Also they could actually just force adds on all the episodes on youtube and get money off of them that way. ~L.F.E.~

Mr. Jaguar 1,403 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Seriously? I hope this isn't true, I don't have any other way of watching the show other than the few times per week that it's on on treehouse......so this better not be true. Are kyrospawn videos being taken down?
Nas 2,873 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 (edited) When it comes to the episodes, I think they deserve a huge amount of support and attention, and I think it's always best to pitch in when you can. For instance, I decided to get a $50 iTunes card just for buying Season 2. Yeah, YouTube is fine, but I don't think it counts as giving credit where credit is due. Unless a link to the iTunes versions is in the description (that's actually why I bought the season). But I completely understand every single aspect and reason they (Hasbro) have when they take down an episode on YT. Also, I've noticed the quality on the uploaded videos (even in HD) is not quite as good as the versions bought straight from the original source (in my case, from the iTunes store). Because the little processes the episodes go through when they are uploaded, some stuff such as the contrast are messed up, and the videos sometimes contain noticeable fuzziness, especially on high-contrast areas, like The red in Rainbow Dash's mane next to her dark blue thin outline. The iTunes version has none of that, and is absolute eye candy in terms of quality. Seriously? I hope this isn't true, I don't have any other way of watching the show other than the few times per week that it's on on treehouse......so this better not be true. Are kyrospawn videos being taken down? I'll beg to differ here. I never would have gone to the trouble of watching the series if it wasn't on Youtube (it's not currently airing in the UK), and if I hadn't started watching on Youtube I wouldn't have purchased the Friendship Express DVD, preordered the Australian DVDs, or started to buy ponies and merch. That is all money that Hasbro are getting from me because I was curious and watched it on Youtube.

Same for me, but even so, the main bulk of their money comes from people viewing the actual shows, not their merchandise. And most bronies don't buy company material. Batbrony 16,055 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 Yeah, I actually got Season 1 and Season 2 in just in time; in fact, my main source of basically all of Season 1 and some of Season 2, LogFogful, his account JUST got terminated, maybe only a week or two after I got done with Season 1; thank Celestia I got onboard the MLP wagon just before Hasbro started cracking down on the actual episodes on YouTube! Nas 2,873 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 When I became a Brony, it was around the time of MMMMystery on the Friendship Express. I caught up, in....I think maybe 5 or 6 days (was on Spring Break, watched a good # of eps nightly)? Anyways, hasn't Hasbro, aka "Habsro", been taking down episodes on YouTube ever since the 4chan days? My journey in the fandom started on April 5, 2012. I joined here on April 24, 2012. SrFrog 927 May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 It's not so bad when compared to how Viacom goes about handling whatever they got their little grubby hands on. So if they decide to take everything out of Youtube big whoop, it's not the only place on the internet with the episodes.
