cider float 2,539 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 Did you come to like a character based on the official show or by a fanwork done by someone else? I usually prefer the characters as they are in canon, sometimes fanworks veer their personalities off a bit.
Fluorin 7 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 Canon of the show is the foundation. We can think up so many properties for the characters, but it will not make them theirs, even if we would like it to be very much. So if I like a character, this character is canon or do not contradict it.
Prospekt 11,021 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 Usually canon, but occasionally fan work. Sometimes fan works are the only places where certain characters' personalities are really developed, like Lyra Heartstrings for example. She is an overwhelmingly bland character on the show, because she has almost no speaking roles and almost exclusively appears in the background. However, in fan works, we can see her with specific goals and a much more defined personality. And though I love Vinyl Scratch/DJ Pon-3's bit in Slice Of Life, I probably would not enjoy her character as much if it weren't for fan works featuring her. 1 Signature by Kyoshi
They call me Loyalty 1,949 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 Mostly canon, and little bit of imagination.
Choros Isorropai 409 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 i fell in love with the series because of cannon, and i will stick with them as long as i can... that said, i do still look for other characters... so i gues im in the middle... OC: https://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/choros-isorropai-r9669 Blog: https://mlpforums.com/blog/3158-poetry-simply-that/ The unasked questions are what bother me, not the answers. The answers give me clarity. Silence is in its self an answer, so ask! To not ask is to deny the existence of said question, and leaves you with just "what if". El Duderino 879 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 I've come to like characters from fan work, but they aren't as memorable. cmarston1 5,959 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 Canon obviously. This is the reason why I don't care much for BG ponies. Because they don't contribute anything to the show other than filling out crowd scenes and aren't designed to have an actual personality.
Megas 27,832 September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 I almost always judge characters based on canon works, which is why I rarely care for BG characters. Closest I got to liking a character based on fanon was Scootaloo thanks to Scootalove, and even then...it became canon
NeonCobalt 256 September 7, 2016 Share September 7, 2016 For the regular characters, I enjoy them because of canon, but for any background characters I like it's probably because of their popular fanon personality. Thrond 3,263 September 7, 2016 Share September 7, 2016 If canon means "any official work," then yeah, canon. Generally it's their appearances in the show which cause me to like a character, although with Cadance and Shining Armour it was largely the comics which caused me to like them as much as I do. Can't think of a time that fan works have sold me on a character, but perhaps that's just because I'm picky.
Aurora Glimmer 494 September 10, 2016 Share September 10, 2016 Depends on which I prefer. In some cases, I prefer the canon versions of characters over the fanon ones; other times, it's the other way round.
IsraelYabuki 446 September 10, 2016 Share September 10, 2016 The canon from the original show made me like the characters.
SquipyCheetah 449 September 10, 2016 Share September 10, 2016 Canon normally is the go to but fan work has made me love characters. Like Twilight for example. Bookhorse really made me love her even more.
