Did you get to like a character based on canon or fanwork?

Did you come to like a character based on the official show or by a fanwork done by someone else? I usually prefer the characters as they are in canon, sometimes fanworks veer their personalities off a bit.

Canon of the show is the foundation. We can think up so many properties for the characters, but it will not make them theirs, even if we would like it to be very much. So if I like a character, this character is canon or do not contradict it.

Usually canon, but occasionally fan work. Sometimes fan works are the only places where certain characters' personalities are really developed, like Lyra Heartstrings for example. She is an overwhelmingly bland character on the show, because she has almost no speaking roles and almost exclusively appears in the background. However, in fan works, we can see her with specific goals and a much more defined personality.

And though I love Vinyl Scratch/DJ Pon-3's bit in Slice Of Life, I probably would not enjoy her character as much if it weren't for fan works featuring her.

The unasked questions are what bother me, not the answers. The answers give me clarity. Silence is in its self an answer, so ask! To not ask is to deny the existence of said question, and leaves you with just "what if".

Canon obviously. This is the reason why I don't care much for BG ponies. Because they don't contribute anything to the show other than filling out crowd scenes and aren't designed to have an actual personality.

I almost always judge characters based on canon works, which is why I rarely care for BG characters. Closest I got to liking a character based on fanon was Scootaloo thanks to Scootalove, and even then...it became canon :P

If canon means "any official work," then yeah, canon. Generally it's their appearances in the show which cause me to like a character, although with Cadance and Shining Armour it was largely the comics which caused me to like them as much as I do. Can't think of a time that fan works have sold me on a character, but perhaps that's just because I'm picky.
