Nostalgia Critic's take on the show

That was a very insightful and thought-provoking editorial. While "screamy, whiney" Nostalgia Critic can be fun, deep and thoughtful Critic (a.k.a Doug Walker) often shows his chops as an analyst, and here is a perfect example.

For as little as he says about FiM in general, at least we know he doesn't dismiss it. It's just not "his cup of tea", but at least he isn't disparaging.

I always felt that the Critic's stance on MLP was one of a sort of interested observer. But it's nice to finally see him give an honest analysis on it in one of his editorials.

What he said about the show is pretty much the same thing most of the analysts in the fandom have been saying for years, but it's something else entirely to see it in this context.

I'm a big fan of his editorials, and this was another great one. A lot of people have noticed how more creative and unusual situations are being used to relay bigger and more important messages, and TV cartoons are most definitely no exception these days. You can hear about Star Trek levels of profoundness in a cartoon and absolutely believe it today. I've been binge watching The Legend of Korra recently and find myself in awe of its handling of politics, emotion, spirituality, as well as the trials and love of teenage life. It really is an exciting time for the industry.

In addition, I think this is the kind of question we should be glad we're asking about TV in this day and age. These are the kinds of shows that geeks/nerds especially love, with their culture becoming increasingly mainstream. New ideas are flowing by the day as the volume of TV shows goes up, but it's also a necessary maneuver to pull out all the stops creatively as a matter of TV's survival in the Internet age. If we still had a majority of the reality show junk from the mid-2000s, TV would be dead. Now, TV realizes it has to compete with video games, social media, and user-generated content on the Internet, and the quality of shows has gone up as a result.

Well Doug actually mentioned in his commentary for his NC review of "Son of the Mask" that Friendship is servable, but not his cup of tea.

Here's a video someone made showing the part of the commentary that talks about his real opinion of Bronies. (From 2014)

Also, here's a video of his Funny Brony Story from Summer 2012 where what little he knew about Bronies at the time got him back into the U.S. after a trip without his passport. I'm not sure wheter or not this video can be found on Channel Awesome website.

Skip to 1:15 for the predicament to his story

Skip to about 3:50 for what he knows about Bronies back in 2012

Interesting take on it, and one of the reason why I do enjoy Doug's work and respect him as a critic. While I still enjoy watching NC each week, I do think the format has gone stale and I don't get nearly as excited for a new episode as I used to. But when he stops putting on the act and shrieking at the top of his voice and just calmly does an editorial like this one, that is where I really think he shines. His passion for film, TV and reviewing is much clearer to see, his topics and observations are interesting and informative, and he usually seems to really know what he's talking about. And although MLP isn't his thing personally, I do have to give him credit for acknowledging and appreciating it objectively, rather than being immediately turned off by early generations or the brony fandom. That's something I don't see very often.

I was surprised that he finally acknowledged the show in an editorial this week. Hooray! I'm glad he respects our fandom. I've been watching him for years, ever since his crossover with The Nerd, who I also still watch. His opinion on Bronies doesn't change that, but I'm still glad to know he doesn't think negatively of us and does acknowledge the creativity behind the show.

A nice, overall positive take on the show from someone who isn't a fan of it himself. Always was a fan of the Nostalgia Critic and that wouldn't have changed even if his view was negative, but it's refreshing to see a viewpoint like that; not to mention with looking at other shows. :)

Nostalgia Critic is one of my favourite... Well, critics, so it's cool to see him finally giving his opinion on the show. I've gotta say though, like he says, the fact this fanbase even exists is incredible, especially for a show that was just trying to sell toys. I personally think it was Lauren Faust and the team behind the show originally who managed to make the show what it is today. Lauren said that she wanted to make a show that wasn't just mindless pandering to little girls, or at least that's what I gathered from the interviews and stuff like that I've read. And, who'd have thought. It worked.
