My Little Japony?

What if we got a fresh cast of characters, but the ponies were all portraying Japanese fashion trends? One always dressed in Visual Kei, sweet Lolita style, one in Gosu Loli (Gothic Lolita), Decora, Shironuri, etc.

Would a spin-off generation of MLP (like a pony version of "Paradise Kiss" meets Japan) be up anyone's alley? Would it be Japan exclusive , or could other countries be accepting of this?

Assuming it doesn't get wantonly accused of cultural appropriation, it might make for an interesting toyline similar to the gothic ponies that I was seeing a few months back.  I don't think there'd be a big enough demand for an entire generation of them, though.

but it could be, with it aimed to a more Japanese audience, I think

But wouldn't it be much better to focus on countries where it's already popular, so that they know that it will be a success.

Also, why only focus on Japan? I mean, there is plenty of other countries where MLP isn't that big so why not focus on them aswell.

I wouldn't be interested in it as I don't really care much for the actual MLP toys.

The only ones that look decent are the EQG minis and the Guardians of Harmony toylines.

but the show reflects the toyline styles, so whatever one looks like, the other will , also

Every time the show has a pony or character with an accent, style or similarity to some other culture in the real world a lot of people lose their shit and start flinging absurd notions left and right (examples including Zecora, Coriander and Saffron, the Buffaloes, the Yaks.. etc...), so I could not begin to imagine the melt down this would create.

If something like this every did happen though I would imagine it would be Japan exclusive with just those truly interested importing it. You would need more than just "the look" but the storylines, dramatics and cultural sensibilities that go with it to sell the product, otherwise people would just see it as sort of mocking an entire culture in a manner of speaking instead of seeing it as a fun show. Some people to this day loathe many animes just for that exact reason... because they see it as "Eastern" being made too "Western".

but why shouldn't it be Eastern exclusive? FiM exclusively portrays the west, because Equestrian is America ponyfied. So why shouldn't a spinoff, Japanese exclusive cartoon focusing on the West be made? (A Japanese spin-off of MLP with a character called Milky (an anthro magical girl pony) got made in the MLP toyline, in the past. So why not the cartoon?

I never said it couldn't be Eastern exclusive. In fact I specifically said it would probably only work as an Eastern exclusive cartoon. Anime is really popular in the west now, but there are still a ton of shows out there the general western audience just can't wrap their head around that for the eastern audience and the western Otaku it is just a normal thing. I have spoken with many a person from Japan who finds the way our shows run and are put together charming... but just plain odd and difficult to sit through.

Bottom line though, no one will know unless the idea is tried and tested, and if we're to afraid to do that, well....

It has been tried.

They have brought eastern shows over here before, they don't do very well most of the time. There was a network here that tried several shows when Ninja warrior started getting popular, and even that show got labeled a "weird show by those crazy Japanese" by many a person here despite just being an athletic obstacle course. Several animes are translated and made "more American" and they do pretty well after the fact, and some of the more action packed ones can make it over without too many adjustments, but all the slice of life stuff, and the stuff heavily influenced by eastern culture and television... networks won't touch it.

Unless I am missing some.

I am not against the idea, I just don't think the Western population would ever get behind the idea save for a small group of dedicated followers.
