Well possibly MLP is looking in that direction for the future so it can integrate the new and advanced technologies of our time. It's probably because people are now becoming more interested in science fiction than fantasy in movies. So it's probably to try and keep people interested in MLP for longer plus have you noticed by the design of the Storm King he really does look like a villain that would be in a science fiction movie.

Well it was a huge interest back then but it's starting to come back because of curiosity of what the future will be. Like if it will be fallout and then we all disappear and go extinct or we end up becoming a universal race where we migrate to every planet we can and the total human population ends up being in the hundreds trillions. It's something a lot of us think about today.

By the way there is a possibility that MLP is trying to set an example for the future of humanity.
