How does the Sun/Moon move throughout the day/night?

It is shown that Princess Celestia raises the sun and Luna raises the moon, but they really only shown it where they raise it once, when day/night start. However, the sun is shown to move throughout the day, and I assume the same for the moon, which only makes sense. Do they move it throughout the day/night, or does it move on its own?

Pretty much do they only move it once, or continually throughout their time of day?

Hmmm... definitely an interesting question that I have wondered about.

Personally, I think that, based on accounts of the group of unicorns that raised the Sun and Moon before the Princesses, it would have to be a one-time thing. Well, it is possible that moving them across the sky takes minimal effort, but I like to think of the Sun and Moon in Equestria as their own magical entities. They behave in a similar manner to clouds in Equestria. They do things on their own, but they require management to function properly.

“Henceforth,” Ditzy continued, “you shall observe Muffin Monday on the first Thursday of every August! You shall commemorate it … with a minute of solemn silence for reflection on the fragility of life. And then, muffins!”

Maybe when Celestia and Luna raise or lower them at first, they sort of chart a course for them that they then follow for the rest of the day/night, until it's time for them to rise/lower again. So, they only raise/lower them one time, but use their magic to make them keep moving on their own for the rest of that time.

That is a good question that would be worth answering in the show. Remember, when they were kidnapped, did that mean that the Sun and Moon could no longer be controlled and remained where they were at the time of the kidnapping? Or could they still move under their own power without their respective Princesses to control them while they were prisoners of Chrysalis?

A good question worth answering sometime.

Hmm... that is a good point.

But that would imply that one of them was kidnapped about 8-10 hours before the other, since both bodies were present in the sky at that time, not just froze in place.

Wait a minute... maybe the Tree of Harmony keeps them moving, and the Princesses give them boosts to get past the horizon..?

But yeah, I think this would be the thing I would like for them to address the most.

Before that episode, I liked the headcanon that after Discord's reign, the Sun and Moon were sent into degenerate orbits, the previous unicorns, and now Luna and Celestia, have to boost their orbital velocity twice a day to keep them from destroying Equus. (In this headcanon, the Sun is a smaller magical entity. Not a star. An alternative could be a slowing Equus rotation, but that makes less sense.

Thanks for the support regarding my questions about the Sun and Moon. Appreciate it.

"They've only really shown it when they raised it once"

Exactly. We don't see them doing it very often. There's obviously some secret that the two sisters share that makes it work.
