Is MLP mainstream?

I think it used to be mainstream during the 2011-2012s, but when Twi drank her red bulls..... I think people just accepted ponies as part of life and others moved on  . Well, maybe that'll change with the movie

Definitely not. Even if we ignore the target demographic of MLP, a lot of people still have a stigma against adults watching cartoons in general, which has always annoyed me as a lifelong cartoon fan. For kids (especially girls), on the other hand, liking MLP is probably quite mainstream.

To be honest, while I would like adults to have more respect for animation and for liking MLP to be more acceptable in society, I quite like not being mainstream. Guess I'm something of a hipster.

Kind of...but not really.  I guess it's on the fringe of mainstream.  Popular media frequently makes reference to it, including the latest Spider-Man film, but...I don't think most people actually get those references.  In fact, I think most people still think of G3 when they think of MLP.  It's easily a mainstream thing for the target audience, but for adults...I'm going to say, no.  That's not to say that the Brony fandom is small, at least not compared to plenty of other fandoms, but it's not nearly as big as the more mainstream ones.  I guess this fandom is...medium sized.  Enough to make a splash on the internet but not enough to set the world on fire.

I can't remember the exact line, but I swear the word "pony" was worked into the dialogue between the bad guys about mid-way through the film.  I believe it's around the time Spider-Man chases after the truck full of weapons.  I'll have to wait for the home media release to listen to it again, but I swear there's a pony reference in there.

I don't understand how the word 'pony' relates to a shoutout to the FiM franchise. It could just be a pony.

Except a group of thugs wouldn't normally talk about small horses, and I don't think they were in the context.  I'll have to wait till I can rewatch that movie so I can rewind and further examine it though.  It's a subtle reference if it is one, but I swear I heard it.  Maybe I'll google it.

I think that's one of it's biggest problems though. It is designed for syndication in half hour timeslots on commercial tv; that enforces a set episode length, and a lot of the stories lately suffered from that fixed length requirement (either seeming rushed, or being padded out to length)

Looking at Han̈azüki with its youtube delivery, I think MLP would benefit more from being on an online streaming provider without commercial breaks, where having variable length eps to suit the story would fit.

I do generally agree that the internet is a far superior method of absorbing media but the general public still considers most of the internet as little more than a plaything.

And yet we have a generation of teens, preteens and young adults now who see non-on-demand tv as a legacy solution, because they have had netflix or similar their entire lives. I know cable companies are frantically trying to protect their cash cows, but at some point they are going to have to bite the bullet and accept that or end up spending their remaining funds fighting to get government to outlaw competition...

If MLP actually became mainstream, like that 'got to watch it' show talked about around the water cooler at the office, it would get corrupted by main stream story-telling and marketing.
