All you have to do is to make posts and such.

Your ranks are based on your content count - the more you contribute, the higher rank you get.
You can read more in this FAQ article.

Just simply post in places where posts count. Places like the Welcoming Plaza, Everfree Planning OOC, or Cloudsdale Colosseum will not increase post count.

@Christhegreat141 Ones rank in the forums is a representation of their content count in Role plays, General Discussion topics and things of the sort, every post you make in specific sections (there are some sections that posting in will not increase your content count, it says so up the top of them)

Your posts are tallied up and at set milestones a new rank is achieved, this is part an old list so keep in mind it may be out dated and inaccurate but it should serve as some reference for what those milestones are.

Your rank is depends on your post count to get to muffin which is the rank after Blank flank you need 5 posts.

There almost was ... for staff Team Leaders.

One of the things that I never crossed off my list (and others have tried to take up a few times) was modifying the badges.  Who knows, this could very well get done still. 

There is a thread about new ranks in the Feedback forum. I'm sure this place still has art talent that they could seek to help add some badges. 

I do know you can get a custom badge if you donate $100 per month. Something I actually wanted to do but I don't want  a Rainbow color or the associated rank name.

No and no. Neither were ever developed. There are several badges not in use there were retired though. 

One is the "Banished" badge that had the Mare in the Moon art. It was used for banned members. Funny but inappropriate. We brought this back on Halloween one year and gave it to a bunch of people when Nightmare Moon took over MLPF. XD

The other is the Certified Brony Badge. Redundant.
