spoiler What is Luna's Cutie Mark???

In one of the latest episodes, Starlight switched the Royal Sisters' cutie marks. Back in Twilight's Kingdom, we see Luna's Cutie Mark is only the moon but in this episode, when her cutie mark appeared on Celestia's flank, it's both the background and the moon. So... what is it???

Been discussed before I think. Best answer I heard was that Luna believed her cutie mark was just the moon, so that is what vanished in Twilight's Kingdom, but SG believed the cutie mark included the stars (and a section of black for contrast) so that is what got switched in A Royal Problem. As demonstrated in All Bottled Up, Magic is mostly about what you are thinking while casting....

This is most likely just a plot hole.

Celestia has white skin, and the moon is white, so there would be very little contrast between her body and Luna's mark making it invisible.

personally I think Luna's cutiemark is the moon including the black, but I don't have any completely factual answers.

That is the most believable scenerio I think. For me it is just a fault by the animators.

Well, no. As @Phisica. points out, a white moon wouldn't show well against Celestia's base colour scheme, so it was not so much a fault as a forced decision. We are probably trying to find an in-world justification for what was a cosmetic necessity :D

That maybe so, but your earlier one is better I think. Why does it matter that the black comes with it for Starlight?

It doesn't - hence we will be bikeshedding it for AGES :D

I always thought that black blotchy thing on her butt was a birth mark. But it appeared on Celestia, so it could be an error. Either a plot hole or an animation error. All I know is that Luna's cutiemark is a moon, and the black background is for decoration.

It seems like it's an error by the animators. That, or they were forced into a corner. Luna's cutie mark was first shown to not include the black patches, but when it had to be swapped with Princess Celestia, they perhaps realised that the moon would not show up very well on Celestia's flank and had to change it to include the black patches.

Some honest reviews and constructive criticism regarding my OC would be much appreciated. Thank you so much! :pinkie: https://mlpforums.com/roleplay-characters/bright-spark-r10033/
