Why only bad guys have kings/queens

I think it might be a translation error.  IMO "king/queen" means "ruler's power is without limits" & "prince/princess" means "ruler has limited power", i.e. a constitutional monarchy.  English doesn't make that distinction, so it translates as "Princess"

Yes, I'm aware that in Disney the good guy is always a princess & the queen is evil. Hasbro aimed the show for little kids & reckoned that they were too dumb to figure it out.  I'm just going with "logic within the show's continuity"

Partially that bit about continuity. Lauren Faust actually wanted Celestia to be a queen, but the execs at Hasbro said that Disney had already created too much of  a negative connotation with queens and had her change the title to Princess.

Also, a large percentage of MLP's viewership is in the United States, where absolute rule (monarchy) is viewed very negatively.

As has been mentioned before, "King" and "Queen" weren't used because of a Disneyism.

While Queen would be correct, Princess does work, just not as well as the former choices.  The latter brings to mind a young, innocent girl, while a queen is usually older, wiser, and perhaps not as free of corruption.  Is it stupid to make a decision because of psychology?  Yes, but the main audience of the show was intended to be little girls, and little girls aren't renowned for having a good understanding of feudal politics.

Also, before someone says "Princesses can't rule nations!", you'd be wrong.  Multiple independent principalities have existed and do exist to this day, the most popular ones being Luxembourg and Monaco.  The medieval Russian states (Kiev, Ryazan, Novgorod, and plenty of others) were also principalities, though they were all united under the Grand Prince.

I don't buy that it was due to a negative connotation. It's because Hasbro execs thought this way.

"Princess + Disney = $$$;

Princess + MLP = $$$!?"

Plus the only bad Queen I can name in Disney is the Evil Queen of Snow White. There's been a few benevolent queens. There's Aurora's mother, Elsa, and not to mention the deceased mothers of Ariel and the like.

My guess is, and this might be thinking a tad too deeply on it, that the title of King or Queen sounds more imposing, more powerful, more intimidating. Princess seems to be associated with innocence more. Even though the royal sisters are treated like Queens so...the title of princess is so muddy and confusing in the MLP universe. For me, Queen Chrysalis sounds more powerful than Princess Chrysalis.

I think Disney helped create this. I also think Princess Celestia sounds better then Queen Celestia, but that is just my guess.
