Well, Trainponies look like ponies, speaking of the bodyshape but they have railway features ,like moving on railway tracks or pulling wagons and carriages, added to their DNA.

Earth Ponies become Freight Trainponies due to their strengh: Freight Trainponies have the ability to pull heavy trains without any problems.

Pegasi become High Speed Trainponies, due to their speed: High-Speed Trainponies can reach speeds above 125mph. That's why they are in charge of fast Express trains.

All other species, including Unicorns/Alicorns become Magical Trainponies: They can spawn rolling stock and do many other magical things.

Apart that, transforming into a Trainpony isn't mandatory if you're not born there.
