Despite MGS3 being a prequel to everything, I'd still say MGS1 as it's the back bone for how everything will play out in the series

Haven't played it, but definitely the original PlayStation one. If you're felling extra adventurous, the original MSX ones, which are canon. I advise against starting with anything released past Metal Gear Solid 2, because I think it's wiser to try the games that are aged, instead of the ones which aged more gracefully

Well if you're really new to the game series, I would suggest MGS1 for PS1, but there's a essential collection for it so it comes with MGS1-3. It comes with the difficulty so for beginners, I would suggest do easy. If you want it challenging, then do normal or hard, but using these difficulties will increase the number of enemies and make things more difficult. for MGS2's difficulty, not just more enemies will appear, but also tags can be obtained based on the difficulty so I suggest do the easiest difficulty to collect the tags and then move on to the next difficulty to collect more. MGS3, I've only watched my brother play the game so you have to keep changing the camouflages to blend in with the environment, scenery, and surroundings.

The other I know is MGS peace walker for PSP, but never played the whole game myself and my brother got me into 1 of the missions just for fun so apparently the equipment, outfits, and weapons are based on the situation of the mission. There are 2 additional missions which are referenced to monster hunter and pooyan. Pooyan missions are self-explanatory and monster hunter missions, well if you played monster hunter before, then these missions are self-explanatory. if you haven't played monster hunter before, well all you have to do is either kill the monster or put the monster to sleep although putting it to sleep will get your Rank S (or whatever the highest possible rank) and a outfit based on the monster you're fighting against if you get Rank S.

As they released at best

While chronologically the games would be

MGS3

MGS Portable Ops(If you count it canon)

MGS Peace Walker

MGSV Ground Zeroes

MGSV The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear(2D)

Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake(2D)

MGS

MGS2

MGS4

MG Rising(If you count it canon)

its better to play them chronologically what would be

Metal Gear(2D)

Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake(2D)

MGS

MGS2

MGS3

MGS Portable Ops(If you count it canon)

MGS4

MGS Peace Walker

MG Rising(If you count it canon)

MGSV Ground Zeroes

MGSV The Phantom Pain

that way you likely get some inside jokes etc. better then in the chronologically story

Depends, if you're interested in the story play them in this order. MGS 3, MGS PO, MGS PW, MGS 5 (GZ), MGS 5 (PP), MG, MG 2, MGS 1, MGS 2, MGS 4, and MGR. The story only really makes sense if you play them in this order.

If not, then I'd start with MGS 1, the GameCube remaster. Though its kinda hard to recommend a game to start with, because each MGS has a different feel to it.

Definitely either MGS1 or MGS3. Probably MGS1 so you can see where the series began its amazingness. A recurring theme of the series is that the games were ahead of their time and that holds true for MGS1. It has the graphics of a PS1 game sure, but I still cannot believe it was done on such a system. Same with MGS3 on PS2. That game did things that most games of today never even think of. You can't go wrong with either of them so pick your, uh, poison? Good poison. :D
