Did Pokemon replace G1 and G2 of MLP?

According to sources, the first two generations of My Little Pony lasted in the US from 1983 to 1998. And guess what? Pokemon was introduced there in 1998! I also want to point out that most Pokemon toys were sold by none other than Hasbro, the creators of My Little Pony.

This convinces me, Pokemon might have been the successor of classic (not today's) My Little Pony back then!

As a resident toy historian here .... you are wrong. Hasbro only manufactured figure toys for Generation 3 (ignoring board games and various stuffed animals). They only had the distribution license from G1-G3 and after that it went to others. Unlike My Little Pony and Transformers, they don't own any element of the Pokemon license or rights. Jakks, Takara, sold more merchandise for the IP.

I wouldn't say so myself – back then, MLP was essentially marketed to just girls, while that wasn't the case with Pokémon. And in both cases, we're talking about just one of many toylines sold by Hasbro – so with not many similarities between the two, it can't really be said one replaced the other.
