A Linkin Park History Lesson

[WARNING] This is VERY long.

I'm bored, so I have decided to educate y'all on Linkin Park, the band that's gone all over the place. The band that has had multiple problems and plenty of criticism. One of my favorite bands, just because of how interesting their history is. So let's begin in the early '90s, before the band was even formed. At this time almost none of them knew each other. Lead singer Chester Bennington was in a separate grunge band called Grey Daze (which happened to be very interesting and good), and he was... well... let's just say he was addicted to drugs. Cocaine I think... gonna have to look that up. Anyways, at this same time, the other vocalist (the rapper, that is) Mike Shinoda was in art school with the band's DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn. They were essentially the beginning of Linkin Park as it is today. Around 1995 or so, they formed a band called Xero. Xero is literally the precursor to Linkin Park. They released a 4 track Demo E.P. that had REALLY bad quality (thanks to them only being able to record in a bedroom). Nonetheless, it was quite unique. I've put and example in the spoiler below to save just a little bit of room.

And BTW this song was actually completed and put on their debut album Hybrid Theory.

When they formed this band Xero, they recruited vocalist Mark Wakefield to (obviously) sing. That's why the example in the spoiler has a totally different vocal style than the current LP. Unfortunately, they did not get anywhere with this vocalist. They tried to get signed to various record companies but had no luck whatsoever. So they split. Mark Wakefield went and started his own solo career (which apparently didn't last long, as he only released one song), bassist Dave Farrell joined Christian Rock band Tasty Snax, and so the band was pretty much left with Mike, Joe, drummer Rob Bourdon, and guitarist Brad Delson. It was like this until they found Chester Bennington, who literally saved them from this almost fade-into-nothingness. They rerecorded several tracks that they liked, sent Warner Bros. Records a demo tape, and finally got signed. They then recorded their first full-length album, Hybrid Theory, and then regained the Xero bassist Dave Farrell. From then on there have been a lot of ups and downs especially with their album Minutes to Midnight. And finally, at current times, they are getting close to releasing their apparent savior album Living Things. Woop woop.

So yeah... ending on a really awkward note. Sorry for the ultra-long post, but I just wanted to tell you peeps about something very interesting and close to me. Eeyup, guess that's about it. GO LINKIN PARK WOO!

Man, I loved Hybrid Theory and I still do. I grew up listening to Linkin Park. After Meteora though, they became sort of stale to me. But all of their earlier stuff is still great to listen to. (:

I agree, their old stuff is their best stuff, but I won't lie, I loved several songs on Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, and Living Things seems pretty promising. I'm actually quite exciting for that album.

I'm with Little Miss Fluttershy on this one. I really like their older stuff like Hybrid Theory, and Meteora. Minutes Till Midnight had two or three good songs IMO. After that though....... eh. That's why i'm really hopeful that their new album will be good :)

It's funny, Living Things is getting really good reviews from critics so far. And that is something you don't see often. It's only with their old stuff that there were plenty of high ratings for their music.

Linkin Park, to me, is like Limp Bizkit. I'll listen to early stuff, but early stuff only.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

Limp Bizkit is kinda crap anyways. I only like 4 or so songs from them, and they're only the non-hardcore sounding songs (i.e. My Way).

I personally liked Meteora the best. The songs were all really good and had AWESOME intros.

I liked some stuff on A Thousand Suns, like Wretches and KIngs and The Catalyst.

I agree that Linkin' Park is a great band. They're not THE BEST, but they're really good. And, good work on the lesson. :3

Hybrid Theory is my personal favorite due to the research I did on it. And those two songs happen to be my favorites off of ATS along with Burning in the Skies. I also quite liked Waiting for the End.

*There be no apostrophe in Linkin Park :P

Yeah, they're quite awesome, but that may be because I literally grew up on LP. Seriously. I know all the lyrics of In The End and can recite them perfectly.

so from what I can gather from your post Linkin Park is in fact not an actual park at all....

Why yes, I am Wikipedia. :) And yes, Breaking The Habit had the most mesmerizing video I've seen from them next to Waiting for the End.

I agree that Hybrid Theory is their best album. It just seems like they worked so dang hard on it. Actually... now that I think about it, the only album that is actually weak in production is Minutes to Midnight. It's crap, at least lyric-wise.

That is pretty interesting.

Though back when they always had a song for transformer movies. I called the Transformers; The Band for a bit.

I did like the catalyst a lot though.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying... but from what I can see, you do realize that they were definitely quite related to Transformers from like 2007 to I think last year. An you like The Catalyst. So do I.

I like Linkin Park's old stuff but I really don't like their newer stuff :/.

That's what they all say...

So finally I'd like to say thanks to those of you who complimented my little lesson. It was kinda just me being all "Oh, I know a lot about Linkin Park. Why not tell the forums all I know?"

So yeah, thanks. ^_^
