gaming Sega Saturn Collecting

So, this is a console I have always wanted to own, but I have never owned one. From my own personal experience, it seems like a hard system to collect for as the games and consoles are not as common as some of the other systems like the PS1 for example. I rarely see stuff for the Saturn in retro video games stores. Any one on here collect for the Saturn and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

I had a Sega Saturn very briefly back in 06. I only was able to find Independence Day and Sonic R for it. They seem to not age well as the one I got rarely wanted to read discs and after a few weeks stopped functioning all together.

The Sega Saturn was a commercial failure and had a short life, so it's not surprising they're rare and hard to find, as they haven't been produced as much as other consoles. If you can get one, let alone a working one, you're lucky. They'll probably cost a fortune though

Imo it's probably the weakest Sega console, suffering from a rocky transition into 3D gaming and doesn't have a great library like the Genesis or even the CD did. But it's still nice to have one.

That’s not what I have heard. I hear they tend to be pretty durable, but they are old so yeah. A top loader console in general is usually going to be better then something with more moving parts.

To be fair, I think the Saturn did better in Japan than North America. I think I would disagree in regards to the games as I hear the 2D fighting games are considered to be some of the best ports of those games available.

Saturn collecting is a mixed bag. There are some releases that aren't very expensive, but they're not sought after all that much or they're extremely common releases. The truly sought after titles go for several hundred dollars to over a thousand. While it was a great system for its time, it had a short lifespan and low sales so collecting for it can be very difficult. Fortunately, it doesn't suffer from "nostalgia syndrome" like the SNES does so it has far fewer titles over $250. Complete prices, not loose. Loose copies are a little more affordable usually.

Running into this topic, does anypony remember Panzer Dragoon Saga?  That 4 disc RPG which very little copies were made in the USA?  Saw an online trailer for that game:mlp_smile: many years back and blown away by the music:wau:  Would somehow like to play it, except that the action flying sequences may be too intense.

I've got a few Saturns and and a fair amount of games, mostly PAL stuff but also have a Japanese Saturn and a few games, I have one US Saturn game.

This is my collection below:

Spoiler

I have another couple of the circular button PAL Saturns like the one in the bottom right hand corner.

Reliability wise I've never really had much problems with the Saturn, the only one I had problems with was the Oval button PAL Saturn on the bottom left which was my most recent purchase where the PSU failed after about 5 minutes of testing it when I first got it but I replaced the old PSU with a modern one a few weeks ago and it runs fine now.

The main downside to the Saturn is saving games as the battery which maintains the save games on the system is prone to running out and the memory cart is pretty unreliable and prone to erasing itself, though it could just be the cart I have.

Most of the games I have are the common ones but I have a few of the rarer ones like Guardian Heroes and Megaman X3, though I had those for years before they became expensive.
