Well I think it depends on whether you're considered the comic books Canon or not. I heard  lot more about King Sombra's backstory was there, but it's contradicted by his "personality charge" to the bad writing of Scar in S9 premiere.

Honestly I don't really care that much about King Sombra.

Nothing in the show or comics hints that he was slated to inherit the empire. Celestia says he took it over in the show, and the comics show how he conquered the empire. Everything points to him being a conqueror, but even if he is not a "real king" in the traditional sense, he will always be the real king of shadows to me. :fluttershy:

You have your Conquerors, then you have your Rulers.

An example to such a Ruler would be Princess Celestia, Princess Cadance, Thorax, etc. Notice how they have managed to maintain, protect and rule over their subjects, to ensure they are stable and have all the necessary daily needs they require to live a normal life. In media the Ruler trope can be seen in both ways as a 'Benevolent Ruler' or a Tyrant due to their personality or how the story portrays such a character. In this show we have seen both styles from the grace and beauty of the Princesses of Equestria and the Crystal Empire, to the Tyrannical dictatorship of Starlight Glimmer in Our Town.

Now for Tyrants. Well, you've seen the before and how they have managed to try out their ways to take over the land of Equestria. Each one doing... Eh, a poor job at least. All  except Sombra, who managed to Conquer the Crystal Empire and made it for himself, as well as maintaining control over such a large portion of territory for quite a long time before Twilight and her friends stopped him and overthrew his rule and dominance over the land. Was a good ruler? Heck no! He was a case of both a Conquering King and a Tyrant wrapped in a bow.

Looking at how Sombra conquered the land of the Crystal Empire, as well as taking a page at our own human history...

By rights, Sombra does earn the title of King and perhaps even deserve to be king.

But does he ACTUALLY deserve that title is another matter.

There is no such thing as a 'real king'. And kings can be tyrants. Add to that that tyrants are not necessarily kings, and that there is no real point is assuming any of that in real history. In Equestria there isn't even a higher authority as a god to validify a title with divine mandate. The only thing is 'blue blood', and since we don't know jack about his ancestors... In the end, some rando could declare himself king, but that was dependent on his peers acknowledging that.

As far as MLP was concerned, Hasbro was stupid AF... These titles carry a lot of negative karma in westernized societies. Celestia was given the title of princess because 'QuEeN sOuNdS eViL!!!!!1111!' Hence, Queen Chrysalis. King Sombra. At least until they realized how dumb that sounded and we got Queen Novo. If only they hadn't messed up everything before.

Conclusion: whatever. King Sombra was King in the cartoon because Hasbro and it didn't need to make sense in their heads.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.
