S01:E27 - All That Jazz

The more I watch Tell Your Tale, the more I appreciate the simple 2D animation.

This episode once again focuses on a character who isn't part of the main cast and that's something I can appreciate. Also, who knew that unicorns were hippies at heart.

I liked this one a good amount. It was great to return to the Crystal Tea Room in Bridlewood. I loved the use of jazz as an explanation of creative expression. Izzy was being really helpful and sweet which was nice. Also, the critter getting a clawicure(?) made me laugh and Rufus was adorable. Nothing major happened, but I liked it for what it was. I do wonder if the next one will link directly to the series since it'll be the last to air before MYM starts.

I really enjoyed this episode! Good to see them focus on another background pony and Jazz is an adorable pony too.

All the different hoof designs were awesome too!

Not much happened in this episode but sometimes, you just need a simple premise and just have some simple fun!

Alright, another above averagely good episode and an above averagely good Izzy episode at that! I always like seeing more of Bridlewood Forest, so I love how the solution to the problem was going there and finally learning for sure that my favorite background pony's name is Onyx, not Gloomy Sonnet. What Jazz needs is jazz, brilliant! I also laughed at Izzy saying that blank wasn't her color.

I guess I'm going to have to grow to accept the fact that they really want to make Let Out Your Light this show's theme song though, even as I like how it was played appropriately here.

I guess it's not seen as masculine nor feminine to be a stallion with your hooves painted, guess the design matters, speaking of designs, I love how different ponies in TYT have differing "base outlines", yeah you got them sprinkled throughout FiM, the characters like Bulk Biceps, Granny Smith or other estranged background ponies that don't fit the base render, haha I love the small differences in the size of ponies heads in TYT, Jazz is adorable, I keep saying how the TYT renders are more marketable than MyM by far... Go figure it would be our craftiest pony to help the artist find their inner spark, also saw that hippy pony from MyM special, time to get us used to not only who's gonna be upfront but who's in the background as well I suppose...

I'd say this was a good episode---again, no moments that make it suck, a good plot to it that held together well throughout the whole thing, and it gave Izzy and another non-mane-5 pony good focus and good characterization.  While there isn't really anything about this episode that stands out, apart from maybe some continuity by showing Rufus still around, it was just plain and simple a good episode.

In fact, this is making me wonder whether G-4 would've been an even better series if they'd done what TYT is doing now:  having plots focusing on non-mane-6 characters, but with one of the mane 6 helping them out...?  I suspect that'd make for better marketing of more G-4 toys if they'd done that.  Who knows?  That might be why they're focusing on non-mane-5 characters in G-5!

Heck, they could've used that strategy in G-4 for both slice-of-life episodes and adventure episodes; I was starting to write a paragraph about how it would only work for slice-of-life episodes before I realized:  it really could work just as well for adventures, if not better!  Heck:  I can think of G-1 episodes that were adventures that focused on ponies helping non-pony characters, and considering G-1 didn't really have a mane cast of ponies the way G-4 and G-5 did, helping a non-pony character was G-1's equivalent of helping a non-mane-5/6 character!

A decent Izzy episode?  Sure, I'll take it.  I surprisingly didn't mind that it's another "help an NPC" type episode, as I had previously felt they were starting to get old.  Perhaps the format of this one just works.  I don't know if the takeaway should be that music is just some deus ex machina that will immediately solve writer's block, but Izzy isn't obnoxious for a change, so c'est la vie.  It was good to return to Bridlewood, though of course we got trolled by not being able to actually see any more of it.  Personally, the idea of hoof polish has never made much sense to me, but that's just me overanalyzing.  This is a decent episode overall, which is probably about as close as I can get to a glowing review with G5.

Did you know Quest 64 is an N64 exclusive?  Take that PlayStation!  Sorry, I just don't see how FiM could have been much better aside from maintaining more consistency later in its run.  As it stands, I really can't think of much at all where G5 even comes close to matching FiM.  I will give it points for trying something new though.  I don't hate episodes like this one, but I also don't consider them the MLP equivalent of a mic drop either.  At best they're something that entertains me for five minutes, which I suppose means they do their job, but compared to how awesome FiM is...apologies, but I really don't see the fuss.

am not at all fond of the idea of stallion hoof polishing.

I think it kind of worked for Hitch.  Hoof polish might look to us like nail polishing, and that might not be what we'd call "conventionally manly".  But in real life, horses in horse competitions do get their hooves polished.  IMO, hoof-polish-to-nail polish isn't an exact mapping; maybe a better mapping would be a little more like comparing it to trying on a new pair of shoes, or facepaint...on your feet...  Besides, what we view as masculine/feminine/neutral in our culture and what they view as masculine/feminine/neutral in their culture needn't be the same.

That's my take on it, anyway.

Izzy's design in this show is rather bothersome to me, I don't know why but out of all the ponies in the show - Izzy has the worst physical design.

If you're talking about Izzy's mane, then I totally agree---she's got a long, curly, moderately-crazy mane in the CGI G-5 content, and IMO that's not a bad design.  But her mane looks huge in the 2-D TYT cartoons, and doesn't match up to the CGI content at all.  Though I wouldn't call her huge mane inherently bad, but it is definitely dissonant with what we see in the 3-D toons.

You know, I forgot about how they turned her into a sociopath with no respect for other ponies' property or personal space...that was pretty bad, and didn't seem like Izzy-from-ANG at all.  I'm glad you mentioned it!

Hitch as a character is a good concept, but the execution I don't find myself particularly inclined to like.

I think you're right---Hitch hasn't gotten many focus episodes besides the Translation one, and they really could do better with how they use him as a character.
