Hasbro Officially Announces That Tell Your Tale Will End on October 17th

Gotta be honest, I feel like Hasbro never wanted G4 to end. G5 felt a bit cobbled together between the weird release schedule and such. It was just this confused mess. The generation couldn’t find its own identity, stuck in the shadow of G4. Plus Hasbro is struggling rn and they probably want their cash cow back. I think “G6” will be a G4/G5 AU.

It looks like the only Pony content we can (maybe) look forward to in 2025 will come from the comics and/or games. That said, Renegade Game Studios should have MLP reveals coming up:

Such a shame that the rumors were true...

...but at least we finally have it officially confirmed so that there's no more being left in the dark. I'm going to miss you, Tell Your Tale, you really rocked. :(

I have heard the rumors and was waiting for official confirmation, but now that it's official - this is very disappointing to hear.

I like G5 and believed that it had a lot more to offer, except that Hasbro has a track record of strategic planning errors. Not only when it comes to MLP, but their business practices in general. G5 did good despite the market in the past few years when you examine financials. G5 had a movie that topped the global box office and Netflix worldwide at the time in 2021 and had multiple shows with many episodes. Very few series ever get that treatment at all in their lifetimes. However, to me - it felt at times that Hasbro was making every decision on the fly and it even seemed like they were trying to derail the G5 train itself. I had my suspicions that this was a cash grab before and when you look at an overview of the release and announcement timeline, it really starts to become more visible. My theory is this: Hasbro deliberately planned G5 this way from the very start. They only changed things like producing additional episodes to TYT, when they saw viewership numbers go higher than expected. Even the fact that this announcement was on the third anniversary of "A New Generation" felt really off.

If there's nothing else planned for G5 at this time - I see it as the end of G5 basically. I have heard rumors that they might do a revamp with G4 and G5 combined, but it's not going to be the same. Honestly, I think it might be entertaining at first to watch the different gens interact, but where do they go from there? How long will that last? Hasbro started off strong with the G5 movie and had some great moments spread throughout MYM and TYT,  but then they just seemingly gave up. I felt that they kept wanting to go back to G4 as it was their "lightning in the bottle", but even when G4 was around - they couldn't even manage consistency towards the end of the series.

Some people messaged me, excited as they somehow see this as an opportunity for G4 to come back as a reboot. As much as I love G4, it already ended. They had 9 seasons(10 if you count the comics), several spinoffs, specials, and even a movie. Why do they need to come back? It doesn't make any sense. Nostalgia feels great when looking back at things, but not to re-live them. Don't believe me? Go watch both seasons of G4's Pony Life. It's not absolutely terrible as some claim it is, but that series was Hasbro's attempt of rebooting and turning G4 into the next Teen Titan's Go. I would not put it past them to attempt it again with a new series.

I am hoping that if they ever release G6, that it exists in it's own universe/timeline away from G4 and G5.  That it is its own original series with original characters, and I'm fine with references to the other gens here and there, but let G6 just be itself and let it grow organically.

I'm honestly going to miss the G5 cast. If this is it, thank you for the great memories!

G5 is a complete example of what could've been. If Hasbro gave TYT the chance to further evolve.

Thank you to all those who worked on TYT and G5 as a whole. Without all of you, TYT, MYM, and G5 altogether wouldn't have been possible.

It's honestly pretty sad to see that it's ending this soon. Despite its many flaws, I really liked g5 a lot. There was a lot of potential and a lot of stories to tell/finish. But the low viewership and general disdain (?) towards g5 is Hasbro's own fault due to their mishandling of licensing. The studio behind g5 couldn't really use a lot of stuff from g4 and when they had to, they had to pay a fee to be able to use those assets.

This is really what most of the fandom was hoping for and expecting with g5. But somehow Hasbro thought it was a good idea to make it a sequel.

"My Little Pony: A New Generation" was so successful on Netflix but everything after that didn't grow off of its success for some unfortunate reason.

Can't really feel anything about this, I'm just really shocked that it's going to end this soon, I was very confident the show was going to last until 2025, as said in that magazine from 2023, but the plans changed, well, I think that's pretty much it, a generation that divided the fandom, I kinda liked it, the movie, MyM, some concepts were really interesting to me, I liked the connections with G4 honestly, and Opaline is my favorite villain in the franchise, a lot of the pony designs are really good in my opinion, and even If there are a lot of flaws in story and I personally really disliked TyT, there were still good things in this generation, even if it's nothing special for me, I still respect its fans and the run it had, the artists who worked on it have done a good work, even if I wasn't caring about it anymore, I really dislike the idea of cancelling a series, just let it tell its story in full, I said months ago in multiple threads that I was expecting this generation to have this kind of melancholic end, but that didn't mean that I wanted it to be cancelled, specially this fast, people were following this and waiting every two weeks for new episodes, they deserve a ending, truly a shame.

While the official information don't mention that G5 is ending, only TyT, I think it's easy to assume that this means that G5 as a whole is really over, no new continuation series, no new movies, productions, nothing, yeah, and I'm probably not looking forward into G6 or whoever comes next, so I can only say that this generation deserved a better treatment, this is disaster, congratulations, Hasbro.

Can't say I'm at all surprised. G5 felt like a completely wasted potential after the end of G4. I just couldn't find myself trying to watch G5, be it MYM or TYT without diverting my attention elsewhere. The overall plot from G5 felt all over the place, the continuity from G4 felt out of place. And no, I'm not here to declare that G5 sucked. And I really don't hate it either. Hasbro dropped the ball on the once-puplar franchise by including a sequel to G4 with a storyline that's simply not there. Sure there was Twilight, but she wasn't even in her alicorn form, or Spike who instead looks incredibly bulked up is instead a full on quadrupedal dragon, which made absolutely no sense.

As for the characters? Well, there was Sunny, who was supposed to be Twilight's successor, but as likable as she is as a main character, her becoming an alicorn almost immediatedly felt awfully rushed. Now, Izzy is thankfully still a fan favorite by many, and other characters are still likable... though they're almost always considered to be forgettable at best, no offense to folks who like characters in TYT/MYM. But overall, the plot for G5 never really cemented at all and just feels relatively short-lived. And the shift from a hand-drawn animation to CGI felt questionable at best; yes, it was a success in the G5 movie, but as a series? Yeah, it aged badly very quickly. They should've at least stuck with the same animation approach like with Friendship is Magic, but instead resorted to slowly destroying their once-popular show that is MLP. And the fanbase, while still going strong so far, is slowly starting to diminish. Unless Hasbro can right the ship, the fandom will slowly start to fade away.

Me personally, I would've at least love to see the return of FiM, at least as a miniseries to focus on Luster Dawn and her new adventures with her new friends. The sad part is that Hasbro has shown little to no interest in even doing so, not even in the form of IDW comics. It's sad that G5 has hit rock bottom because of the lackluster approach and the lack of formula G4 had. And for G5 to be shown on Netflix and not on TV is the reason why the overall viewership has tanked. Not many people can afford Netflix, much less other streaming devices, namely Discovery+. Even I tried to get myself interested in trying to watch MYM/TYT, but I quickly lost interest after a few seconds, if not minutes, give or take.

Shame on you, Hasbro, for tarnishing a once-beloved franchise for your own benefits instead of listening to the large community. Now you get to watch as folks lose interest and start looking elsewhere one by one.

I'm unfortunately not surprised that it's already over. TYT was fun at times but ultimately I don't think the 5 minute short format did the world/characters justice.

I always preferred MYM. Of course, MYM wasn't perfect either. But I tried to be an optimist. I truly hoped MYM could continue to improve over time and help G5 last a few more years. I still think the 22 min episode format allows for better worldbuilding and characterization.

It's a shame. Perhaps it's best if a future G6 show just takes a completely different approach. G4 nostalgia clearly wasn't good enough to make G5 shows viable.

I agree that making a series after a successful film was a bad move in one way. CGI animation is after all more expensive than traditional animation.

Hasbro has to do something. But since we're getting "nothing at all" next year, they should at least do some re-releases of G4 before G6 arrives. Note that we did get re-releases of G3 media last decade.

Is there any chance that G6 will revive the fandom or at least be better than G5, or was G4 a fluke, and MLP will never be that good again?

I wondered to what extent G4's immense popularity was due to its own quality, and to what extent was this due to the conditions of the time that made many so receptive to G4? That is, if G4 began in 2020 instead of 2010, would it still have been immensely popular?

Sure, there's that chance! It's going to depend on the showrunner(s) and how much leeway is granted by Hasbro.

I think this is really interesting to think about. It being a really good show of course had a big impact on its popularity but I also think it just came out at the perfect time. Right where the internet was really blowing up in popularity, when YouTube was getting super popular. That growing use of the internet and rise of internet pop culture really helped to skyrocket the shows popularity imo. You still have that now of course but it feels like the internet moves on from games, shows, and movies a lot quicker than it used to back then. Which makes it hard for things to really leave an impact and grow in popularity beyond just being the newest thing of the week or month.

So, I do think G4 would've been popular if it started in 2020 (especially with the pandemic hitting that year), by virtue of it being a genuinely good show. But I don't think the community would've grown to be as big as it was at the shows peak. And I don't think the community post-finale would be as big as it is now either.

It's interesting that MLP: FiM, Skyrim, and TF2 all got popular at around the same time.
