I suck at rhythm games---I'm a total and utter newbie to them.  For context, I tried Guitar Hero in an arcade several years ago, and after the song was over, a friend told me "You do know you have to strum, right?"  ...I did not know that!  At all.  And I never touched Guitar Hero since.

When I tried this one, the beats were coming so fast and so thick I gave up and closed the tab after the first few measures, since I'd figured out pretty dang quickly that I wasn't going to have fun with it.  I hate to say that, especially because I've got a lot of respect for Rikifive as a developer, but hopefully this feedback is enough to let you know that it's wiser to let newbies ease into the gameplay.

 

Maybe rhythm games simply aren't for me :/

Just a little feedback. In fullscreen mode on Google Chrome, the menu buttons all seem to be a bit above where they appear. For example, in my screenshot, I had to click a around the exclamation point to hit the "Play Again" button. The buttons in the main menu and options menu were similarly off. Outside fullscreen mode, everything was in the right spot. I checked on Firefox as well and all the buttons were in the right place, in both fullscreen and normal.

On another note, I love these two new rhythm maps you put together (I of course had to go back and play a little Winter Wrap Up as well :P). And being able to remap the keys was a nice addition. 10/10 :D

Huh that's interesting. Works fine for me in both Chrome and Firefox. Though I did notice, that if I have the developer console opened and thus, the Fullscreen mode doesn't actually cover the entire screen, the mouse position is indeed off. There's that funny thing about it, that there are no built-in accurate functions to get current cursor position on scaled canvas (game window) - or at least I'm not aware of any - so there are some manual maths trying to account such things behind the scenes. Did the Fullscreen mode cover the entire screen for you? - and if not, was the game window on the center of the screen?

When I have the dev console at the bottom, I have to click below buttons, and it sounds like you had it the other way around. :P

Like vast majority of users here I suppose. :twi: I mean, I'm not saying everyone sucks, but it's just that many aren't used to that type of games, and generally rhythm games aren't something everyone will like. So don't feel bad about it please.

I've never had the chance to play Guitar Hero, so I'm not too familiar with its controls either. Actually, it may sound odd given my creation here, but actually, I'm not too much into rhythm games myself. I do enjoy games, that utilize music in gameplay and the like, but I'm not a pro at that genre either, as I typically don't play these dance games and the like.

 

I get what you mean, and I totally expected that kind of feedback. Even without it being said out loud I see users struggling with the game, just making their way to the end in any way for the badge (which is totally fine). I did plan to add either slower songs and/or introduce easier difficulties to existing ones, so that it would be more appealing to wider playerbase, but I just didn't have enough time, the event is released late after all (originally planned for September 22). I'm not having a good time at life, heh. :mlp_icwudt: 

Perhaps they aren't, and it's fine to have your own preferences. :coco: Ideally, I hoped to create bunch of completely different games/activities for some other occasions, so that everyone would eventually find something they'd like. If only the time would allow me to experiment...

You mentioned scaling which gave me an idea. I have a somewhat large monitor, so I zoom out when I'm on the forums. I usually keep it scaled down to about 80%. I just zoomed it back to normal and tested the game in fullscreen. Fullscreen does use my whole monitor regardless of zoom level, but at 100% the buttons where in the right spot again. It turns out I was the problem all along. ^_^

Ooh then yes, that makes sense. Somehow I didn't even think of zooming, totally forgot about such option, so didn't test it. :P ...Yeah, it's misbehaving exactly like this for me as well when the zoom is anything but 100%. I'll keep that in mind, and maybe toy with it next time to see if anything can be done about it. :P Thanks for feedback! :darling:

I actually got pranked myself. I added two songs, because I knew Welcome to the Show will get kinda hard, so I imagined I'll make Shine Like Rainbows to be an "easy" song to have variety. But somehow, it was quickly getting tricky the more I worked on it heh.

Could you also add quick restart by pressing R? :rarity: I'm on 97% in WttS, and soon I'll reach the point where I reset every time I miss.

Not gonna lie, having to grab the mouse each time just to restart was inconvenient even for me, to say the least. :mlp_icwudt: I do plan to add full keyboard support in menus in the future (the mouse will be optional for navigation), so I was thinking I'll eventually get to that when the time for it comes, buuuuut given it's not just me now, I quickly added a keyboard shortcut for restart and updated the game.

You can press "R" to restart while in the pause menu now. (Space+R)

Just keep in mind there's still that fraction-of-a-second indented delay before anything can be done in the pause menu - to prevent from accidentally intantly-unpausing or quitting. So, slam space and spam R :mlp_icwudt:

 

I'll be slowly working on the difficulty thing now.

This is so haaaard, I'm used to synchronizing only four buttons on one hand as with most rhythm games... Here I either have to get both hands working in sync or play on a phone screen that is clearly too small.

Yeah, I get ya. It's indeed quite different. Technically, one could rebind controls to make them somewhat similar to these in dance games and the like, but there's still the two extra buttons.  :ooh: I'll be working on easier variants of the existing songs, and I'll see if I could limit the usage of the lanes to 4, without the 2 on the edges (or at least make the notes there very rare). Perhaps that would be a fair step towards beginners.

Not embarrassing at all, you've caught most of the notes after all! ~ It's just few misses and a matter of practicing timing to get perfects, but you totally nailed it! :darling:

I've checked the game you've mentioned, and, assuming I was looking at the right thing, it reminded me of Love Live! (RIP). I haven't played Love Live! myself, but my sister really liked that game. :P 

 


I've released a somewhat experimental update (v1.1.2), in which I added an option to adjust the falling speed of the notes, you can find it in the layout options:

The default speed is x1.9 soooo yeah, you can make these even faster as well.

This will only affect the notes visually. The exact timing required for perfects/goods remains the same, regardless of the speed (the hits are based on time itself, rather than what's on screen). Therefore, slowing these down technically doesn't make the game any easier, it just may help with readability and player's reaction speed.

Personally, while doing 100% on normal speed isn't a problem for me, I'm actually having a bad time at slower speed. :P At slower speed the screen gets too flooded for my preferences, and short sliders get quite sneaky, but hopefully everyone will find their own preferred speed. I've noticed the "Flat" perspective works better at slower speeds, so feel free to toy around.

 

That's just one step towards fixing the high difficulty issue, I'll be working on easier variants of the maps next time. I have to go to sleep now. :please:
