Favorite Ghibli Movie?

To my surprise my favourite films weren't the more heavy handed ones the studio is known for (even though I'm a sucker for social commentary and in depth analysis), but My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. They had a really homely feeling to them that media normally doesn't capture to the extent they did. IIRC My Neighbour Totoro was one of the more personal films of Miyazaki's pertaining his mother's illness in his childhood?

I also feel out of my depth trying to analyse Ghibli's films as I am ignorant on Japanese history and society so my thoughts on them would be very off mark and personalised - I came across in particular a journalistic essay on Spirited Away's themes and was taken aback on how many of the things the journal discussed went over my head. Still a fun watch though!!

This is one of those situations where it’s hard to differentiate between favorite movie and best movie. Spirited Away is undoubtedly the best Ghibli movie, closely followed by Howl’s Moving Castle, but I tend to gravitate more toward the subtler slice-of-life movies. So my personal favorites would have to be From Up On Poppy Hill, Whisper of the Heart, and When Marnie Was There. I know Hayao Miyazaki didn’t even direct these, but he’s always involved in one way or another and it’s all beautiful. I want to add Kiki and Totoro, but I have to trim the list somewhere and it’s hard enough as it is!

At the theater I saw that they're playing nine Ghibli movies throughout the summer. Also TMNT 1990 will be in theaters for two days. I wish I had a lot of time and money. I'd go see them all.

Howl’s Moving Castle is sweet. I watched Spirited Away as a young kid and was really scared of Noface for awhile D:
