gaming Anybody want to try my bullet hell game? (update with... KEYBOARD SUPPORT!)

Original post containing an explanation, game controls, scoring and speed system, and version 02:

Very early stages, so don't expect anything amazing. It's still all programmer art/sound, so nothing impressive there. Oh, and it's done in game maker, so don't expect anything impressive anyway :/

Anyway, in case the meager instructions provided in the game aren't enough, here's the run down.

So you have you black and red ship. You control it with the mouse. Left click to fire your normal gun, right to activate a shield that protects you from enemy bullets, but not direct contact with enemies, middle button (or whatever you have set as M3) fires seeking shots, and pressing all three at once is a screen-clearing bomb with horrible, built in particle effects. All pretty standard bullet hell stuff.

The unique thing about this game is scoring, which puts emphasis on dodging and efficient use of button actions (anything that requires you to press a button). Basically, your score is always going up, but button actions cause the rate to decrease, or even cause your score to go down. Your score CAN go into the negatives.

Also, the game constantly gets faster, making getting through harder and harder (read: impossible). Firing causes the speed of the game to decrease, and the slowest it can go is 30. Due to a problem I haven't worked out yet, none of the other actions decrease the game speed correctly, so I'm working on that.

So basically, you have to balance not using any button actions (to maximize score) and firing (to stop the game from getting impossibly fast), all while dodging a screen full of enemies and bullets.

Good luck :)

Here's the link, since I can't attach .exes or .rars to the post :(

http://www.filefacto...t/n/shmup02_exe

Just scroll to the bottom, click slow download (unless you either have an account, or want to buy one for some godforsaken reason.) Wait for the time to run out, click download, and then it'll download. Because the site is stupid, it adds quote marks around the file, so just right click and take the ' out of the file extension to make it work. Stupid, I know :/

Second post with version 04 and it's limited change log:

Oh my god, I actually updated this? This surprises even me!

So, here's the link to the new version: http://www.mediafire...cet69chit85ll39

And a by-no-means complete change log:

-new music added; press M to change tracks, and N to mute.

-invisible walls added; no more god mode by going off screen

-speed counter changed to show how much faster it is instead of the actual number; 1 is base speed and increases in increments of 0.03.

-speed now caps at 2.5x normal speed.

-2 new waves of enemies added after the boss. When these waves are finished, the first wave starts over, so it goes on forever as long as you don't die.

-other stuff I don't remember because I don't document the changes :/

More enemies in the works, and 2 just need to be added in as waves.

More options for player ships are in the idea stages. All will have totally different playstyles (and most likely different scoring systems), including one that has little to no weaponry but gives you complete control over game speed, and one that has multiple shields that all do different things, making hitting as many bullets as possible a good idea if you know how to do it right.

I continue to be somewhat productive *gasp!*

So, here's the long-awaited (by one person) keyboard controls. Oh, and about 1.5 new enemies. The 0.5 is because I made a new enemy, but it was boring, so I though it would be cooler if a whole new enemy shot the boring enemy at you. So it's really only a part of another enemy. But whatever, you don't really care about that, because OPTIONAL KEYBOARD CONTROLS :D

It was a bitch to get everything to work the same as it did with the mouse, and I learned that I wasn't very consistent with things checking the position of the mouse itself, as opposed to the player ship. This became quite evident when enemy shots were seeking the invisible cursor as opposed to the player ship in keyboard mode, but I think I got it all sorted out :) Tell me if I didn't, of course.

Overall:

Very fun and fast paced. I like the final boss.

It could easily be done by holding down shield, shooting, and missle-ing forever, seeing as the score rises indefinitely when you beat it.

No offense, but usually saying "I made this in Gamemaker" turns me away.. But I'll try it, just because I like you ;)

I still have the game open just because I like this music.

If you were serious about this, maybe adding a "game over" when you beat that final boss?

Since I just love finding glitches, if you hold down the "Bomb" button forever, your score goes so negative, it actually resets to positive.

Really? It's just a several second loop I threw together in FL studios earlier today, actually. Glad you like it XD

Hmm... Yes, this is a rather major bug. I'm actually quite surprised I didn't notice that...

That's hilarious. I think I might even leave it like that XD

Although, that might mean that if the speed gets high enough, the score will be increasing so fast that it also resets and goes to negative... I should probably fix that somehow.

I'm down to try it.

Edit: I can't even get it to open for some reason...

Right click the file and go to rename, then go to the end and delete the ' from the file extension, to make it a recognizable .exe

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure. You're running windows, right?

Jolly good show, I say.

Your first two waves are fairly easily defeated, though - you need only stand still and hold down the fire button on the first to clear it with around one thousand posts, while on the second you can stay at the top of the screen without firing and be completely safe from the horizontal firing enemies that emerge. Additionally, adding a splash of color to enemy bullets might help them stand out a little more.

My Touhou-born instinct to GRAZE EVERYTHING is not working to my advantage in this game.

Over all, quite nice!

Edit: Additionally, in the first wave you can stay to the far, far left and not get hit by any bullets. Also, if you take your mouse cursor out of the window, the game will keep going, though your ship won't be hit by anything at all. God mode, basically.

Times like this are when I hate playing games on a laptop. If only I could use the arrow keys.

And I think it would be better if instead of dying every time your hit, you could make some health system? Other than that, it really wasn't a bad game.

Yeah, there are a few places where you can stand still in the first two. Actually, any of the spaces between the horizontal bullets are enough to fit in, it's just hard to get that fit right in what little time you have unless you shield.

Additionally, adding a splash of color to enemy bullets might help them stand out a little more.

They're all grey because I want all the enemies to match. One thing I've never liked about Touhou is that the shots are often similar colors to the pickups, so my "dodge everything" that lets me not get hit also makes me miss a lot of pick ups. I realize that's part of the game, but I figure that in my game, with dodging and managing speed, having to distinguish between all the things coming at you would be a bit much. I do plan on adding pickups at some point, I'm just not sure on what kinds.

My Touhou-born instinct to GRAZE EVERYTHING is not working to my advantage in this game.

Heh heh, no tiny hit boxes in theis game. What you see is what you get. Also, I'm not sure how precise the collision detection is, though, since I don't really try to graze at all.

Over all, quite nice!

Thank you :)

Yeah, but if you're off screen, your score doesn't go up. Or at least, it shouldn't. It didn't last time I checked, and I haven changed how the scoring works since then. But I think I'll make an invisible wall.

Times like this are when I hate playing games on a laptop. If only I could use the arrow keys.

I have always been planning to add an option to use the keyboard instead, but it's not too high a priority right now.

Pfft. REAL shmups don't have health bars. But maybe I'll add lives, which is effectively the same thing, I guess, since it just increases the amount of hits you can take.

Maybe you should try Mediafire for this. I kinda want to try this. Maybe if someone who already downloaded it could upload it again?

Shameless self bump so more people see this.

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome, as are any bugs you find :)

Oh, and it's a mediafire link this time. For some reason, I thought mediafire was one of those upload sites that makes you jump through hoops to upload anything :/

Sweet, i can play it! Yay!

Also, a suggestion- Most touhou players are used to having a smaller hitbox than the character. Try and shrink the actual hitbox accordingly.

But this isn't Touhou :P

But I will probably shrink it a bit, since there are times when it detects a collision when it looks like it shouldn't. Not down to Touhou size, though.

I tried opening the game, it loaded the screen with play and instruction. Now it's just frozen. I can't exit out of it or end it with Task Manager.

Does it do this every time you try to play? As far as I know, you're the only who this has happened to.

Did you try re-downloading it?

Hey guys, I couldn't help notice the lack of interest in the last update, so I thought I'd mention you all to make sure you saw it. I added some stuff. You might want to check it out, it's slightly more worth playing now :)
