How open minded do you think the world will become?

I've actually been thinking about this.

We've become more open minded as time has moved on. Or maybe not. I'm not so sure these days.

And my question to you guys is, how open minded (shut up, I can't think of a better word right now, I'm tired from the lack of partying as it's the end of the semester :P ) will we become?

Do you think we'll just keep on tolerating? Past anything we can conceive of now?

Maybe you think it'll plateau and they'll be a point at which humanity for the rest of existence will accept with nothing more than that.

Or, more excitingly, we'll become more close minded and begin to hate more.

I maybe going to an extreme here but I think it'll come to the point where everything is tolerated. Pedophilia ( not rape, but the actual attraction), bestiality, really whatever will be accepted as something someone does. And as long as it doesn't harm someone (in ways they do not want), everything will be alright.

Actually I'm sure there is a group of people who hold such values.

Also, let's try to keep this civil shall we? ;)

This one is a tad less creepy. Wouldn't you agree?

I think that the world will be the same. I mean there are a group of open minded people, while there is another group that is not open minded at all. It's a possibility that over the years less people will be as selfish, but there is always going to be someone who only believes that their own beliefs are what matters. I hope that made sense.

If we begin to tolerate everything that doesn't hurt people then we'll be living in a sad morally depraved world. Might as well just throw out all concepts of right and wrong right now

To answer your question I do think our society is headed in that direction partly out fear of being politically correct, though I think it's misguided and full of false hope and false happiness

The world is really open minded in Greece right now, oh wait, that was a few thousand years ago.

Anywho, we're just gonna travel in a circle. What will most likely happen is some crazy new religion will take over and destroy the traction that social progress made all over again.

Or maybe not. Atheism and softer religious beliefs are growing very fast, maybe fundamentalists and radicals will soon be mostly gone, and the world will remain stagnant in terms of religion.

It will be based on how the history unfolds. If resource gets strained which is quite likely in a foreseeable future, then people's desperation will give birth to more extreme ideas.

Take a look at the recent economic recession that's been plaguing almost 1/2 of the entire world; United States have witnessed an ever increasing polarized political culture, people losing trust in the government and some even resorting to creating their own private militia, venting anger and frustration on specific groups of people are all signs of a civilization under a stress.

Things like philosophy, moral standard and spreading goodwill is critically dependent on how prosper the civilization is and the amount of strain the people are feeling. It is a constant reminder to how fragile such things can be and why it is so important to recognize the true worth of those things.

I wouldn't say the world ever becomes more or less 'open minded'.

Changing to a different view and being open minded are two completely different things.

Even if every form of sexuality (including bestiality, pedophilia, etc.) was accepted in society, I wouldn't consider that an 'open minded' society. I'm sure if you presented that society with the idea that one of those may be wrong, they'd recoil and would reject the idea.

Then you can accuse them of not being open minded!

"Open-minded" has basically become an idiom meaning that you accept whatever society accepts. Hence if you don't conform to that society you'll be labeled as a "closed-minded" person.

Note: I only bring up sexuality because it was an example the OP gave.

We're much more open minded than a few years ago, however one question, will the US join the rest of the world in being open minded or continue to follow "tradition" that was outdated more than 100 years ago?

I do hold a primarily consent-based morality.

I don't mind pedophiles or zoophiles (for example) as long as they don't go and actually rape anything.

As for age of consent, that is another issue for another thread.

I don't think we'll ever be very tolerant. Human nature pretty much determines that we'll be pretty close-minded and be more cautious and judgmental of those we've never seen before or don't have much in common with.

It's human instinct, and not a bad one at that.

I am, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof, and incapable of error.

This. Open mindedness only seems to count when you agree with other "open minded" people.

I doubt that society will become much more tolerant.

But then again if you asked someone from a hundred years ago about homosexuality they probably would be 100% against it.

So maybe in the future we will become more open minded as a society.

I can't speak for the whole world, but what I've seen in America is fairly promising. In just the past several 100 years, women got the right to vote, gays/lesbians have obtained more and more support throughout the nation, we've gotten our first black president, and racial divide has turned on it's head into racial diversity. In general, I'd say society is becoming more and more tolerant to new ideas, that of which hundreds of years ago you'd probably be thrown in a nut house for :P Now, there will always, always be a large amount of people that will be against things, and that'll never change. However, the society norm that was established long ago is definitely altering in increments, every generation.

A philosophy based on not hurting each other is full of holes that leads to making exceptions that lead to more holes because "hurt" is an ambiguous term.

Eventually, someday, the world will tolerate everything for one of two reasons:

1) We will have simply come to accept the differences of others and will genuinely tolerate basically anything

2) We will all become a "perfect" master race. No diversity, we are born to continue the existence of the master race. At least we'll all be dead before this is even possible!
