Tupin86 195 July 6, 2012 Share July 6, 2012 (edited) Celestia was originally supposed to be Queen Celestia, but Lauren Faust was made to change her to a princess because of a stigma amongst the target audience that queens in cartoons are evil. Similarily, Prince Blueblood was originally going to be a Duke, but it was changed to prince because Hasbro figured no child would know what a duke was. What do you think about the perception of queens and princesses? Do you think Celestia/Luna's depiction in the show is a positive representation of what princesses should be? Starswirl the Trixie 975 July 6, 2012 Share July 6, 2012 (edited) Titles are just semantics. It annoys me, though, that they call Equestria a "kingdom". No, it's a principate. As is the case with many things, it comes down to the age old dilemma: If the show's writers wanted to add something to benefit the story but it was shot down to preserve profits, should that still be considered canon? Nas 2,873 July 6, 2012 Share July 6, 2012 I just like that it's somewhat of a carry-on/homage to common Disney movie logic. My journey in the fandom started on April 5, 2012. I joined here on April 24, 2012. Where that journey is headed now, who knows...

Faust mentioned it on Twitter recently, she wanted to use Celestia as an example that queens can be good... But when you think about it, Celestia is basically a queen in all but name as she has total control over the kingdom. Strawberry Tart 161 July 7, 2012 Share July 7, 2012 when I was little, I preferred princesses over queens because queens always seemed old to me. so that might be another reason Hasbro decided to make it "Princess Celestia" instead of "Queen Celestia". Wishful Thinking 102 July 7, 2012 Share July 7, 2012 Bu...but...doesn't a princess have to be married before she can become a queen? I have no idea, but once upon a My Little Pony time (yes, reference) I was told as much. I will admit, Queen Celestia seems about 20% cooler than Princess Celestia. XrosOver 613 July 7, 2012 Share July 7, 2012 The title princess come with less responsibility as a ruler and being co-rulers takes even more responsibility of Luna and Celestia and allow them to converse with the public freely unlike a queen The mind of the host will desperately try to create memories where none exist. Simple right?

Maybe the king/queen title goes to a much higher rank, maybe the leader of the entire planet or continent (If there is such leader?). HunterTSN 1,444 July 8, 2012 Share July 8, 2012 (edited) well keep in mind that no matter how much bronies get into it, Ezynell is right, the target demographic is still little girls, and little girls like princesses Edited July 8, 2012 by thesteampunkninja Your very own Victorian-styling, airship-flying, super-sizing, brass-lining, quick-drying, detoxifying, low-pricing, newbie-knifing, over-driving, sometimes-hiding, unsurprising, ninja-fighting, perfect-timing, always-smiling, never-lying, best at writing, also rhyming automaton! Guest July 8, 2012 Share July 8, 2012 (edited) Maybe it is like the Mushroom kingdom and there is a King somewhere, he is just never seen, never mentioned, and unnamed (at least in general cannon). Otherwise I just attribute it to sticking to good ol' Disney logic. Edit: WAIT, hold the presses! It is a conspiracy! Celestia simply uses the title princess because nopony usurps the title of princess, but everypony would be plotting to take over the kingdom otherwise. Perhaps they just keep the kingdom going in a constant succesion disagreement that never comes to fruition and keeps Celestia as the Regent! (sorry about that last one, I've been playing too much Crusader Kings 2 lately ) Edited July 8, 2012 by Guest
TheFabulousPony 102 August 26, 2012 Share August 26, 2012 It kinda bugs me as well that there isn't queens etc. but kids prefer hearing princess etc thanks to Disney and all that haha "We are all in the gutter, but some of are looking at the stars" ~ Oscar Wilide

Batbrony 16,055 August 26, 2012 Share August 26, 2012 (edited) Yeah, I figure that Hasbro just decided to use Disney-logic when it comes to Equestrian royalty. The Nostalgia Critic always makes fun of this ridiculous Disney logic, because even though many of Disney's own characters to whom it's applied to actually make sense having it applied to them (i.e. they still have parents, so they are still technically princes or princesses), so many other mediums (i.e. kids shows/cartoons) have applied said Disney-logic to their own shows, and guess what, it usually doesn't work!!! Why? Because so many of these characters don't have parents anymore!!! If you rule a kingdom, and you had a mom or dad who was called King or Queen *blank*, don't go around calling yourself Prince or Princess *blank*!!!!!!!!! You're an adult ruling a KINGDOM, and as such, you should call yourself a KING or QUEEN!!!!!!!!!! Now, I partially give MLP a pass simply because Lauren did originally plan on calling Celestia "Queen Celestia," and also it's never been confirmed that there were any kings or queens prior to Celestia and Luna's dynasty (within their own dynasty I mean, not separate dynasties, like whatever dynasty made up that unicorn monarchy discussed in "Hearth's Warming Eve"), so technically, as others have said, their rule could be a principate instead of a monarchy, but still, it is annoying that Hasbro just figured kids don't like kings and queens! Seriously Hasbro, GROW UP! Edited August 26, 2012 by Batbrony "You'll hunt me. You'll condemn me, set the dogs on me. Because that's what needs to happen. Spring Storm 276 August 26, 2012 Share August 26, 2012 I honestly wish Celestia and Luna had been given the title of Queen, for the reason Faust stated - to show that queens can be good as well. I think Luna and especially Celestia are more queen-like than princess-like. Oh well. Maybe in a future episode, we'll meet a king or a queen that have authority over Celestia and Luna. silvadel 1,393 August 26, 2012 Share August 26, 2012 It seems to me to make it so that ALL alicorns are princesses/princes and as such ANY could be the ruler as opposed to having a specific lineage while placing less distance from the other ponies than a Queen title would.
