Pinkie... Not so nice after all?

There is such thing as a vegetarian hot dog. It's disgusting, but it does exist. But then again, we've got to realize that all these ponies we love live (at least mostly) on a diet of hay, grass, and flowers, which are disgusting to humans but probably like bread and butter to them. So it's possible that veggie dogs might be a common food in Equestria. But that doesn't explain Applejack's ham sandwich...

Assuming that AJ's sandwich really did contain meat, that must mean that ponies keep some kind of livestock. A barn inhabited with cows was briefly shown, which implies that ponies have enslaved cows and keep them for milk - and presumably, meat. It's a disturbing thought considering that ponies are technically herbivores, and seeing how their world lacks war, hate, and racial prejudice, but I see this as the most rational explanation for the ham sandwich (and probably the hot dogs, too).

If it wasn't for the sandwich, I would've chalked the hot dogs up to Pinkie's general insanity. But looking deeper into it, ponies in general may not be as nice as we think...

Which brings a bit of an inconsistency to light, because in Over a Barrel Pinkie specifically stated that their diets were "strictly vegetarian." So was she pulling a grey applejack and being untruthful?

I don't see Pinkie Pie as the untruthful type. But that said, she did make that claim in the middle of a song, and it's easier to get away with an exaggeration of the truth in a song than during natural conversation.

Here's a crystal-clear 1080p shot of AJ's sandwich. Can anyone think of any vegetarian food item we might possibly be mistaking for ham? Because if you can, that would explain everything.

Well, its a sandwich, filled with lettuce, tomato, and Pink Cream.

Why? Who knows, but its a party, and I don't put it above Pinkie to do that. I mean, she serves Alligator punch.

Maybe the term "hot dog" has a different meaning in Equestria or, as someone else pointed out, they eat veggie dogs. I think what's more likely though is that there is something dark and sinister going on in Ponyville. Has anyone seen the anime Higurashi? It's like that except the victims are being turned into food.

Pinkie was refering to the hotdog flavoured cupckes she makes for BBQ get togethers!

They're great with hot-sauce!

But doesn't Pinkie love hot sauce on everything?

Disgusting!? As a vegetarian I take offence! Veggie frankfurters actually taste quite good, not as good as veggie Lincolnshire sausages, but they're still pretty nice!

There is such a thing as veggie ham as well.

Sorry, I didn't mean any offense. But I personally don't like veggie dogs, from the limited experience I've had with them. Maybe I was unlucky and didn't get a very good one.

Why do I find that nauseating?

Why are you dragging your cursor over my signature? Is there a problem here? Do you maybe expect something special? Honestly, that's kind of creepy. Are you trying to get as much information about me as possible? Maybe you're going to copy and paste this into onto your little collage or all things Lyra? (me, not the awesome BG pony...) You seriously have issues dude... I pity you.

Ok, so there's some explanations for other things Pinkie could have been eating in those situations...

But what about Fluttershy? "What!?" you ask. "She wouldn't hurt a fly!" Oh really? You know she's killed, right? Anybody remember these episodes?

She's got fish, and she feeds them to ferrets! I thought she loved all animals? Hasn't she seen Finding Nemo? Fish are friends, not food! What has happened to Equestria? :(

Pinkie Pie consuming hotdogs.

Thats not ketchup. it's the blood of her dead enemies. And that's not hotdog meat. It's the flesh of her dead enemies. And those hotdog buns aren't bread. Well, actually yes they are. But she stole them from the homes of her dead enemies.

I had a vegetarian friend who insisted McDonalds chicken nuggets didn't count as meat, and ate them all the time. While I suspect she just didn't want to give up her mcnuggets, I'm thinking the hot dog thing is a long those lines- does it really count as meat?

As for AppleJack, she's farm folk and I've never met a non-meat-eater farm folk in all my life. Ham sammich doesn't surprise me at all

Your friend is full of derp.

"Chicken" nuggets are meat. It's pretty much the leftover parts of the chicken that's ground up into a beautiful paste-y substance.

Hotdogs are made in a similar fashion except instead of chicken it's beef or pork.

You didn't actually offend me: I was just being silly! I keep forgetting that I'm not on a forum that I've been frequenting for years, so everyone does not yet know that I'm basically never serious.

I'm afraid your friend is not vegetarian by any definition. I know there are some people who eat fish and claim to be vegetarians (they're actually pescetarians, or pesco-vegetarians, a type of semi-vegetarians and are therefore lower on the Hierarchy of Dietary Arrogance), but this is honestly the first I've heard of someone claiming chicken isn't meat!

I really don't understand what makes fish any different from other meat. How is it any closer to being plant material than chicken or a steak? On a molecular level, fish meat is more or less interchangeable with other meats, but sure as hell not with plants.

Well, perhaps to ponies hot-dogs are not meat related products? You got to take into consideration that they might possess vocabulary similar to ours but not essentially same. They might make hot dogs out of vegetable paste or tofu and actually like the taste without meatification.

to illustrate further the sandwhich with suggested ham has just a pink flat surface in there which could just as well be beet pancake with flour to bind it.

Then again we have seen ponies eat eggs at least in pastries and also milk is required in them so they do possess digestive system that can then process animal fats without bad reaction. Making them pseudo-omnivores. However I don't see ponies butchering anything, However they do seem to keep pigs on farms.

It is just a cartoon of course and the farm animals might just be "flavour" elements if you pardon the pun.

Yeah, I don't understand it either: fish meat is still meat. Sometimes I tell people I'm vegetarian and they insist on asking whether I eat fish, my response is usually to stubbornly restate that I'm vegetarian and therefore do not eat meat.

Pescetarianism tends to be more prevalent than other forms of semi-vegetarianism due to the fact that fish is an important source of protein in one's diet that is not easily replaced with vegetarian food stuffs. I do wish that pescetarians would stop claiming to be vegetarians, though.
