What Happened to Disney?

I've never liked Disney too much growing up, I did notice around 2003-2005ish, they started going downhill, mainly because of the teen pop star buissness, which is overdone and pretty stupid.

Plus, this sums it up in a nutshell what is going on nowadays:

You don't say?

Plus I realized, meany of these teenage pop stars get a bad rap, and are more likely to drink, do drugs, or get arrested, or all of the above.

So much from a company that claims to put so much emphasis in believing in yourself, following your dreams, and family values.

This is really getting to be a problem. but there is one really big reason for this. they take young adults and make them stars then they grow up and fade away and because they became so big so fast they get addicted to it and will act out just to keep it when the are no longer in the spotlight. Miley Cirus is a big example.

Yeah i think Toy Story is the only good Disney movie nowadays. I think Disney's magic got all into MLP FIM

Don't give Disney credit for Toy Story, Pixar deserves the credit for all of those Disney Pixar films. The only reason Disney can put there name on it is because they own Pixar.

Eh, it's not that Disney is necessary bad nowadays. It's just like everything else, it has changed. Just like movies, tv shows, video games, and society in general changes. When we grow up with something that is now considered old, we get nostalgia. Video games aren't the same anymore (based on nostalgia). Pokemon just doesn't have that kick to it anymore (nostalgia). Old video games are totally superior to new ones (nostalgia).

We need to embrace new things. Disney hasn't really put out too many bad movies from the ones I have watched. It still incorporates themes in it's movies. It's just that most of their movies are not hand drawn like they used to be. Remember, they are appealing to the new generation. I think some of the stuff they have released has been pretty good. I would like a hand drawn film from disney though. I can only take so much of CGI animation.

What's happening to Disney? The same thing that's happening to Cartoon Network. The guys at CN aired some AWESOME shows we all know and love but what do we have now? A shitty version of it's former self.

What ever happened to the good Disney movies like the ones that most of us grew up with. Lion King, Mulan, Hercules.

they used to be really good and really original. they had good plots, good music, and they were funny and sad in the right times. and in the end they had a good message about social and personal problems.

yes there are some new movies that are ok like Toy Story two but even if they have a different plot to it you cant call them original because they are squeals. just whant to see what others think.

Yeah, no, Toy Story is not a Disney movie. It's a Pixar movie, and shoulder never be categorized as a Disney movie. I am not a fan of that acquisition...

That's quite a true point, and regarding the issues stemming from child stars, as long as there's been them there've been these kinds of issues. Judy Garland, who was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, is an earlier example. From Wiki:

Despite her professional triumphs, Garland struggled immensely in her personal life, starting from when she was a child. Her self-image was strongly influenced by film executives, who said she was unattractive and constantly manipulated her onscreen physical appearance. She was plagued by financial instability, often owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes. She married five times, with her first four marriages ending in divorce. She also had a long battle with drugs and alcohol, which ultimately led to her death at the age of 47.

Anyways on the subject of Disney I tend to enjoy their works (as in films, not Hannah Montana-type crap) but I've never been the biggest of Disney enthusiasts. I'm very fond of franchises like Pixar's works which Disney now owns, but they don't count as they weren't made by Disney.

sorry but they technically they helped create it and they own the rights to the name and the product so it has to be considered in part disney

In what way did they help create it? They contributed nothing in the development of the concept for the movie, the characters, the storyline, et cetera. Since when does owning something mean you created it? I've owned a PC and a Mac, does that mean I made them and that they (as products) should be considered part of my lineage? Absolutely not. Toy Story does not descend from Disney, they merely own it.

it was released as a co-production i.e. it is a Disney-Pixar film. im not saying that they did much but they do have status as co producer.

No, would [you] call Banjo Kazooie a Nintendo game? No, [you'd] call it a Rare game, because that's the company that made it. Regardless of who distributes it.

Anyway, the only redeeming thing about Disney nowadays is Pixar, and Gravity Falls is pretty great, too.

Wreck it Ralph looks awesome, as well.

are you asking what a squeal is or what movies are squeals?

Either way a squeal is a second installment of a previous movie, Mulan 2,Cars 2, Toy story 2 and 3 these are all squeals of disney movies

No, uh, sorry, it was a joke because you spelled sequel wrong.....

Yeah.

It was a bad joke, not really a joke, anyway.

Sorry 'bout that.

My biggest issue with disney and honestly just about any animation studio right now is the lack of 2D animation. I really miss it and i'm already tired of all this CG stuff being shoved down out throats. I don't see why both cant coexist.

Ya CG is ok at time but you have to be good at it to make a good movie. I wish that they would bring back some of the older style 2D stuff.

Disney has always delivered the Television or Movie content that the younger generation wants.

Unfortunately, I don't believe this has changed, rather that what the younger generation wants has changed, and Disney has changed (unfortunately) to accommodate this.

The younger generation today seems to have different interests and priorities than 10 years ago. Whereas 10 years ago, we would indulge ourselves in the fantasies, worlds and stories the Television shows would offer us, the younger generation today has a large internet exposure, and with this, brings a culture of socialisation (through Facebook and the likes).

Most people on the internet chat with someone, or a group of people. Most people do it on Facebook. But what does this create for the younger generation? When a large group of younger children interact with one another almost constantly, through school and the internet at home, it can create an environment of competitiveness we see/saw in High school, where people want to strive to be the most popular, indulge in the same interests and unfortunately, can be quite brutal to one another.

Perhaps it is in this manner where it could be argued that socialisation has taken a rather more brutal turn in recent years, that you see Disney changing the content they produce to match the newer market. I can think of examples of poor, live action shows which are based around kids at school, and Hannah Montana (I don't watch Disney often, for the reasons in this thread). But both these examples pander to that audience I just described. Hannah Montana appeals to the culture of children who are indulged in competition for popularity, as she is marketed as a role model.

I don't like this new young generation, where people are fixated on their computer and don't leave the house. Mindew, it's not just the younger generation, it seems to be most people. Maybe it's not a case of Disney's quality fading, but rather the quality of life of most people fading, with media channels such as Disney degrading with us.

Yeah, Disney is a lot different. The only reason we cn think of this is because Walt had died, and when the creator of something dies, it's all completely different from there on out. We all kow it.

I don't consider the CG-i and recent Animated movies to be bad, but they aren't as good as they should be. Ya know?

I like to think that the problem lies within the target demographic itself. Kids these days like flash over substance, so what is Disney to do? Create more of what they crave even if it's not very good, after all children don't know the difference nor do they care. Of course it's not until much latter when we realize this.

Well Disney seems to be doing great once more when it comes to the animated front!

Certainly not all of their animations are a hit, but not horrible.

Most of their high quality films as of late come from Pixar, who can't seem to really screw up... well maybe Cars 2 a little...

Pixar films are just the best 3D Animated films, and arguably the best western animated films.

Though Disney has proven recently that they can still do a good job with 3D animation without Pixar! Tangled was a much better film than it had any business being, and Wreck It Ralph looks to be also good if not just for the video game nostalgia factor.

And FINALLY they are succeeding once more with animated cartoons! Phineas and Ferb I felt was good, but the formula the show stuck itself in got it to be really repetitive. Not exactly a great cartoon but not bad.

To be honest I haven't seen many more of modern Disney cartoons seeing that most are on Disney XD but I've heard they are still good.

Though the newcomers is what has me excited...

Gravity Falls is quickly reaching its way into my heart as an instant classic cartoon! Its seriously one of the best cartoons I've seen since MLPFIM or Adventure Time. Hell, at this pace it will probably surpass these shows by its next season unless it royally screws up.

As if it couldn't get any better, Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust are co-producing a new show called Wander Over Yonder! So the same lovable couple that brought us Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends is now making a new cartoon for Disney, and after seeing something like Gravity Falls come out, I am completely stoked to see this new show!

---

In short Disney isn't dead, you might just be looking in the wrong places.

They are showing astounding quality in the animation fields.

They seem to be judged harshly for being a "Hannah Montana Machine" and producing bad sitcoms usually surrounded by some kind of music theme. I agree that these are pretty bad, but hell I can just ignore them and go right for the animation! :D

Skimming through this thread, I have to think... If specific people played a role in many of the old Disney classics, then isn't it just a matter of time until another such person comes along?

Yeah, Miley Cyrus is one of these examples and even Demi Lovato started doing cocaine I think and had to go through rehab.

This has been bugging the hell out of me for a while. This romantic view of classic Disney movies and constant shating on modern Disney films which to me is based soley on the fact that it is new (or worse CGI) and therefore not as good as the 90s films. I loved Bolt (it's what got me to start paying attention to Disney again), Tangled, Princess and the Frog and even Winnie the Pooh. I don't think Disney is any worse off now then it was 20 years ago. I still think Disney movies (and that doesn't include Pixar) have a unique style of storytelling that hasn't change since Snow White in 1937. I'm fully looking forward to Wreck-It Ralph and will be seeing it in theatres and not thinking the whole time ""I wish this more like classic Disney"
