gaming Steam Greenlight

Recommended Posts

Basically, Steam added a feature that allows people to rate, comment and vote on games that developers post that they want to be put on the Steam platform, giving the community a choice in the games that appear on it. The "about" page they have made explains it far better than I ever could, so I'll link it.

So, seeing the community-driven nature of the beast, I decided we could use a thread where we can talk about games developers are posting, chuckle at the ones that are obvious nonsense posts, and post about games we think look interesting and deserve more votes.

So, discuss away.

I've already placed some votes down, for McPixel and some IndieRoyale games. I applaud them but I do hope that it stays a fair and balanced system. As long as some games aren't favoured over others for no reasons.

Although some of them look awesome, I think the indie scene in general is still plagued by one thing: Minecraft. Loads of games seem to share the "block" system, whilst that is not in itself a bad thing, I think it just shows a lack of originality. Definitely some good games on greenlight though, and I can see some truly superb games coming out of it in the future.

@@Carbon, That's actually not true, there are loads of Indie titles which want to be unique, however gamers are gobbling up the whole creative sandbox type games like Minecraft and now whoever does it becomes popular.

There are still a vast amount of Indie titles out there that are not Minecraft at all. Being unique in it's very own way.

Also voting should give control to give us the ability to have garbage not end up on Steam, like horrible and obvious Minecraft clones.

I agree. While there are a lot of games that are jumping on the Minecraft sandbox bandwagon, there also a lot that appear to be trying to do their own thing. But, having things like this set to vote has a problem, though. People are idiots. However, since that made me sound like a misanthrope, I'll explain myself: A lot of people tend to judge books -and games- by their cover. That's how bad games sell. "Oh, look, that game has a guy holding a gun on it!". In fact, there's a game on Greenlight right now banking on this by shoving animated tits in your face. So, with Greenlight, it's inevitable some crappy games will end up on Steam, while some gems will go ignored, sad to say.

Yeah, this seems like a really good idea in hindsight. But then there are dicks that make fake entries like "Cock Wars" and "WTC Flight Simulator". It's insensitive really.

Well, this is a good idea for users to get only the "Best" games on steam. There are too much sandbox games, though (IMO).

Oh, and I know a developer who has his game on there. I've seen him on two other forums I go on. His game's called Snayke, it's basically a snake clone with modern graphics settings, playback, and multiplayer, I believe. Check it out, or not.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

Since anybody can submit there are lots of nonsense entries. I think the downvote button is a bad idea - if a game isn't good enough, it will just be lacking votes. One I am hoping gets greenlit is Heroes & Generals.

I actually think the downvote button is a good idea, mainly for the games that look horrible. Because, the internet being the internet, enough people might joke-vote on horrible games enough that they pass. But the ability for people to vote down can counter that. However, the system as a whole needs some drastic tweaking. I believe they could get rid of the downvote button if there was some kind of screening going on before games even hit the system.

You're right, I forgot about people spamming bad games with upvotes and it is good to be able to counter that. Although somewhere on the Steam forums a Valve developer said a downvote does not nullify an upvote. My impression is that Greenlight is a way to gauge community interest so there is no guarantee a terrible game will go up even if it reaches enough votes. Edited by Hat988

Vavlve released an update to the system today requiring a $100 fee which is donated to Childsplay to submit a game due to all the crap being submitted. They also made it easier to find games to rate.

Click here for the link to the full announcement

I was reading about that earlier. While I think $100 is steep, I agree with the motivation to add the fee and find it kinda noble of them to give the money to charity instead of spending it on gold-plated toilets and yachts and stuff. Throws the hole "OMG THEY'RE BEING GREEDY" argument. It's a shame the trolls uploading fake games ruined it being free for everypony else, though. But it was inevitable. It is the internet after all. Overall, I think the $100 fee won't deter anypony who is serious about getting their game on Steam.

Yeah, I agree it is a bit steep but that's our non developers view. Most company's that are making games can afford it as making a game is no easy or cheap task. I kinda agree with a comment someone made on there that said if they can't afford the $100 fee then the game can't be that good. Even if it was just a small group of people that do it just for fun they will still have jobs which they can use to pay for it. It won't take long if they all put aside some money.

  • 1 year later...

I was gonna make a new thread but with my super smart head that I just used... I searched instead.

I want this game greenlight, I have no connection with it, except that I bought a Groupees bundle a while ago that had it in it... And I'm not much for Desura.

If lots of crap can get greenlit, I don't see why this couldn't :P It's so cute!
