Recent DDoS attack on the Forums, your reaction?

Title pretty much sums it up. As you know, 2 days before this thread was started, MLPForums suffered a DDoS attack. Many of us were unable to even load the site, much less post on it.

How did you react to this at the time? I panicked for a moment, then I emailed Feld0

The forum had a similar attack a while ago and they were prepared this time.

There have been attacks before. It's no big deal, really. The site's never been shut down for a prolonged period of time, anyway.

I went "NUUUUUU" then went to rage on LoL. Then I incurred 5 straight losses on LoL. Then I ragequit and watched some anime. Then I went to bed.

I blamed it all on Trixie and Tom the Diamond so I traveled down to Tom's house to pile all his Trixie merch on the front lawn and set it on fire as a sacrifice to the digital gods to end this attack. Then while Tom cried I danced Gangnam Style.

Unlike last time where we were caught somewhat with our pants down, this time Feld0 was able to take steps to minimize the impact of the attack on the site. It helps that our present web host wasn't completely brought to its knees by the attack, like the one we had previously, too.

On a serious note, I just wait until everything is taken care of while screaming profanities to the screen. My connection loves to cut itself off randomly, so it's an everyday case for me.

Might be a problem for traffic for a bit, but in the grand scheme, it's not something to treat as a huge deal. The staff take care of it, things are good. There's far worse things that happen to online communities, like hacking of administrator accounts. Not that such things would be something to worry about.

Well my mouse suffered dearly... I repeatedly spammed the refresh button on my browser until I got onto the site and then did it again when I tried going to a thread. My mouse: 2008-2012. R.I.P.

DDoS attack happen all the time you just have to wait them out it was either a hater thinking that he was being funny or that there are to damn many of us either way they don't last forever

Well, I seem to have a problem of my own at the moment, although now I don't think it's really the attack you all are talking about..I can't get to my tabs. The orange bar is over everything else, is this intentional, or just a loading bug?

I will only say that this is clearly a sign that we should suspend civil liberties, outlaw radical outlets in the press, and enforce loyalty tests for each of the members of this forum.

 

This is how peace is secured. Feld0 will lead us into a new age.

I am used to this forum going down now. I knew that it would be back up eventually, so, like usual, I didn't worry about it.

That actually doesn't have anything to do with the denial of service attack. In order to fix that problem, all you need to do is clear your browser cache and cookies then log into the site again. Here is a nifty guide that you can use:

I'm used to it, mostly from other forums. I refresh once, and if it doesn't work, then I know my Internet isn't just being wonky, and I'll try again later.

 

It could always be much worse though, way back in 2009, Sonic Stadium, a huge unofficial Sonic website, was taken down. It was all because the hosting company terminated their account. Basically, all content was gone, and the only backups that existed were of the main site, none for the forums. (Although later it was speculated that some admins had copies...)

 

Either way, I always try to think positive, a DDoS or any attack could be much worse. Thankfully, the team here already knows how to deal with it, so in my opinion, it doesn't seem like a huge thing like before, but now its just an annoyance.
