Well, I LOVE THE 60's, 70's 80's music alot! I don't have anything against ''now'' music, i still listen to it, nut i am a Rock Fan and NO ONE CAN CHANGE ME!!! xD

Let's see. 2010s: whiny, embarrassing non-threatening "rock" sung by guys who sound like they literally have no balls. An endless assembly line of Stepford pop singers who look, sound and feel the same. Hip-hop has lost all meaning and become a bunch of angry men shouting at each other over beats. Metal is actually doing fine, but no one's paying attention. And let us not forget something that future generations will look back on and wonder not just "why," but "who" and "how can we go back in time to stop them"...screamo-crunk.

 

1980s: still lots of lousy, samey techno/dance/pop stars, but at least most of them aren't starring in movies. The REAL Lady Gaga, i.e. Madonna, was out there. Michael Jackson was in his prime. And I got to discover many of the hit songs afresh, without constantly hearing them on the radio. Artists who in retrospect I can love for their sheer lack of substance (Stacey Q for the win!). Also a golden decade for heavy metal. Yep, I'd take the 80s.

Ok -- here is a good challenge for the 2010 people out there...

 

Take someone who really does enjoy 1970s music through 1984... What are the ten songs that have come out in the last fiveish years that could make me change my mind? I am open to listen but I havent found much of today's stuff that compares or is anything similar to what I enjoy. I mean ever since billy joel stopped making rock tunes I have been at a loss for new music.

 

I mean Johnathan Coulton is the closest I have come...

I think, personally, that the good tunes from 2000 and on will be remembered by future generations as much as the good tunes from the 70s and 80s and 90s were remembered. After all, do we remember every pop hit from previous times? No, we try our hardest not to sometimes! So, I think there are some class hits from out current day that will be remembered.

While I listen to alot of 80's rock I have to go with 2010's, Because Muse's new album the second law just tops all my favorites... While I do think a ton of trashy pop artists fill most of the 2010's up this is one of the most diverse and exponential decades for music ever.

I'm an 80s guy myself. My favorite bands being Queen, Deep Purple (which had their start in the late 60s, split in the 70s, and reformed in the mid-80s), George Thorogood and the Destroyers, ZZ Top, and many others that would make for a rather tedious list should I list them all.

 

Today's rock just has a completely different sound to it that I can't get into. And I can't stand the vocals. Nevermind autotune, men just sound different than they used to, and the way they sound today just doesn't do it for me. I find it rather obnoxious and bland to be quite honest. That's not to say they don't have some good riffs at times, but most of the time I find myself wishing they would just shut up so I can try to enjoy the instrumental portion of the song. And they don't seem to be quite as "philosophical" as musicians of the past; stating the obvious like it should be profound or stating things in trite ways. I'm not saying that every song attempts to do that or should, it's just that most attempts at it these days usually fall flat.

 

Moving forward from the 80s, I do enjoy a few forms of industrial and not so long ago discovered that I like EDM. The Crystal Method was my first exposure to it and I'm currently trying to find some similar bands. Most dubstep I've heard has seemed too haphazard and chaotic to be enjoyable, but @Veiled Enigma turned me on to Blackmill, and I think that guy is brilliant. I'm not some music elitist that's stuck in a particular era, I'm willing to give lots of things a fair chance, it's just that in the past decade or so I've been disappointed more often than not.

 

The only thing that really rustles my jimmies as far as music is concerned is when one of today's musicians samples the riff of an older song and somebody from a younger generation doesn't hear the original until sometime afterwards, then they think that the original artist is a biter. I realize that they don't know any better and there might not be an easy way for them to find out; it's just a sad situation. The best example I can think of and the one I've faced most often is the tune for Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby. Back in middle school there was one guy who thought that Nelly was responsible for Movin' On Up, and refused to believe that it was written in the 70s for The Jeffersons.

There is good and bad music in every decade. In the 80's you had all these crappy hair bands (Poison, Winger, etc.) but, you also had all these good bands in the underground like Sonic Youth, The Pixies and Celtic Frost.

you have a excellent point the 50 s and lower are really not good. Amen! every time I listen to Journey or Bon Jovi whenever a guitar solo comes i can here the effort they put into it i can fell the emotion they put into it. Todays Music it all either sounds like Big Time Rush or One direction

Sorry, but if the Nicki Minaj song is a "love ballad" like "Into The Night" is, then something is definitely wrong on how they classify music today.

Ugh, I hate it when people rant about how 'music today sucks'.

 

It doesn't suck. Sure there is terrible music around, but there was terrible music in the 80's and 90's too. We just remember the good music from the past, while the shitty music gets lost to time.

 

It really isn't fair to only compare the 80's/90's classics with the bad music of today.

I'd say 80's music definitely. No, I didn't grow up in the 80's; I was born in '96. I love the 90's music, as well as the 2000's music, but 2010's music has lost it's edge compared to previous decades. The 80's, to me, will always be the best, with the 90's coming in a close second. The 80's had Thriller and Bad two of the greatest albums of all time. Yes, I mostly like the 80's for Michael Jackson (as I'm a huge MJ fan) but there were other good songs too, like Puttin On The Ritz, Take On Me, Don't Stop Believin'.

 

Yes, you could argue that MJ also had great albums in other decades, but he never had 2 albums in the same decade that were as good a one-two punch as Thriller and Bad. I like his albums Invincible (from 2001) and Michael (posthumous album from 2010) more than both Thriller and Bad, but they came from two different decades. Thriller and Bad were the one-two punch that made MJ as famous as he was and made the 80's the best decade for music. Plus, those 80's instruments are sweet. Just listen to this:

So far, the 2010's still have a long way to go in terms of musical quality. In fact, Michael (the album) is the best music to come out of the 2010's! LMFAO, Maroon 5, Michael Jackson, and Katy Perry are the only artists who have actually released quality music since 2010. Other songs sound almost the same as each other and don't really compell me to give them another listen. In all honesty, this decade's music has lost the edge that previous decades music had.

I'd say my favorite decades are the 60s and 70s. The golden era for hard rock and progressive rock. Bands such as Yes, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Genesis, etc. There were good 80s and 90s bands, and there are good bands today, but the 60s and 70s were the best decades for music IMO.

I love 80's music. My mom is born in 1980 so she's kinda young. She have been raising me with 80/90's music. I prefer 80's music because... They sound happier. I LOVE Journey, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd and so on. I listen to rock from 60's to 00's. I think the music back then was more awesome.
