Zygen 6,066 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 Now this is a bit of an odd question, actually I don't really know for sure whether I should've put this here or in general discussion but I just decided to put it in here. Now I'd first like to mention for those who aren't aware that I was homeschooled for all of my life up until when I went to school in 8th grade and I am now in 9th. I was sitting in class one day and a guy randomly asked me why I had my legs crossed. I hadn't really noticed they where crossed but I just kinda shrugged and didn't say much. He told me that I shouldn't do it because thats the way girls sit. Now I'm not saying hes wrong or anything. Infact I'm sure its very possible that I'm very wrong considering me not having knowledge about this kinda stuff. I never really found anything wrong with it. I don't always sit with my legs crossed, but I do sometimes. Other times I sit with my legs under me or in my chair or in all kinds of crazy positions. I try to atleast have my feet under my desk at school. I'm weird when it comes to sitting( I even sit kinda perched sometimes...) Anyways what are your thoughts on this? Is there anything directly wrong with this? I'm just curious honestly. If theres something wrong with it then I might try to stop doing it. But if its just people being judgmental or something then I don't think it matters. Whew talk about rambling over a short little question. Anyways thanks for your time and sorry if this seems kinda ignorant to any of you, I'm just genuinely curious about this after that day. Thanks! 5 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! NavelColt 22,883 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 (edited) People label this that and the other thing as 'this is for girls' and 'this is for boys'. Just look at the show we all watch on this forum. I cross my legs and I do it because it's comfortable sometimes, depending on how I'm sitting and where. As another example of something society views as a 'girls' thing; I plan on getting my navel pierced some time in the next year. Now I'm bi, and it's more socially acknowledged that gay or bi guys would do that, but even if I were straight, and I wanted it done, I'd still do it. What some people view as 'socially acceptable' should not dictate your life and how you do things. You shouldn't flaunt things either, but certainly not let society keep you from doing things you want to do. And that applies to everything from self-expression to what you find comfortable. Because again, society is retarded. Stereotypes are retarded. I think this fits better in General Discussion, honestly. This isn't advice about life. Moving to General Discussion. Spring Veil 255 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 I see nothing wrong with sitting with your legs crossed, I'm doing it right now and I'm a guy. A lot of people though think it is wrong and a "girl" thing to do. I used to sit like that all the time in school until I started to get bullied about it. If anyone saw me sitting like that they would either bust out laughing or start calling me "gay" or a "girl." I'm neither of these things but eventually I just had enough and I've been sitting uncomfortably like a robot ever since. Unless I'm at home, like right now. 3 Support me on Deviantart! http://springveil.deviantart.com

Yeah true, Thank you for the input! Its glad to know I'm not the only one also! I'm not Bi or gay or anything, and of course have nothing against either. But still the fact that others do it makes me feel more comfortable. And thank you for the move 1 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Dimitri Hammer 3,645 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 I sit like that sometimes. Not all the way crossed but I rest my leg on my knee....okay I do sometimes cross my whole leg. It's a habit for me I can't help it. Besides I'm a manly man, who cares? How does sitting define your sexual orientation? Teller 360 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 I sit with my legs crossed all day, every day. Why should society try to make a comfortable sitting position exclusive to the female gender? I want to sit comfortably, too. :<

I'm neither of these things but eventually I just had enough and I've been sitting uncomfortably like a robot ever since. Unless I'm at home, like right now. Yay someone else I don't really get bullied about it, but luckily our school is pretty strictly anti bully. The only time I've ever had it mentioned to me directly at school was that one day. It also really bothers me when people use insults like gay and girl. Its confusing to me honestly. Its like they are implying that being gay or being a girl is a bad thing or something.(Plus its impossible for a guy to be a girl technically speaking..) And I sit in all kinds of different ways. Some ways people find very uncomfortable. I also think some of the ways I sit may not be the best because they can put alot of presure on my skin and cause my skin to get kinda flakey or dry or something(hard to explain) sometimes with all the pressure. Or it makes my leg arm or whatever I have in a weird enough position to sleep. Despite this I'm not actually that massively flexible. I can be pretty decently balanced for certain things though. I can tie my shoes while standing . Anyways enough rambling sorry about that. Thank ya for your input I sit like that sometimes. Not all the way crossed but I rest my leg on my knee....okay I do sometimes cross my whole leg. It's a habit for me I can't help it. Besides I'm a manly man, who cares? How does sitting define your sexual orientation? My father sat like that a lot....and he's former KGB. Well the only reasoning I can think of that has to do with it would be because they think it will squeeze your private areas. Where as with girls it obvious can't. The only reason i can think of. However it depends on what you call crossed I suppose. 2 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Lightning Fluttershy 1,844 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 There is nothing wrong with sitting like that. Nothing at all. I myself find it uncomfortable though. :/ I sit like that sometimes but usually just to make more room for other people who have to sit.
MelancholicMemory 2,027 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 Nothing is intrinsically girly. It's all societal labels and expectations. I personally, don't really care about how people see me, and, though I usually don't cross my legs in the way which I think you are describing, I do sit in a kind of weird way because its comfortable. Society's rules about things like how you're supposed to sit are usually kind of silly anyways. This video kind of demonstrates that:

Retro*Derpy 3,207 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 Well crossing your legs can be used for becoming more comfortable, but actually it is quite more meaningful than it looks. Men and women do it when they are thinking more, or getting into a conversion they find interesting/uninteresting. I learned if they flip their leg so the foot is facing the speaker they are very interested in what you have to say, but if their leg is facing the other way, they really don't care what you have to say. So no, I don't find it strange at all for men to cross their legs.

And I mean because of the fact that I was homeschooled my parents where the only ones who had much involvement in any of my learning really. Since they aren't medical experts or anything. Instead of other teachers who might notice things. And I also never have been thus suspected for anything really. I suppose maybe my parents just are overprotective and isolate me alot of that time to, Who knows. Anyways I'll look at it. Don't worry about it anyways. I'm doing pretty poorly with wording anything. Well crossing your legs can be used for becoming more comfortable, but actually it is quite more meaningful than it looks. I don't obviously pay much attention to when i do any of this because it all happens subconciously and if I try to pay attention it just messes with how my actual subconcious actions would be(Hard to explain but hope you understand.)Still interesting... rcollinz13 428 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 Well then I guess according to society I'm a female. I sit cross legged whenever I'm sitting on the floor and there is no wall to lean on. I also have this really weird hobby, *wispers* I watch a cartoon for little girls called my little pony: friendship is magic. In all seriousness, I don't see how sitting cross legged is girly, but then again society puts these very arbitrary taboos on just about anything.
Tuxedo Kamen! 114 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 As another guy who often sits funny and crosses his legs when he sits, I think it's natural. However, it IS a girl thing. Not to be mean or anything, but sitting with legs crossed serves a purpose. Back in the day, when the world was blatantly sexist, and all girls wore skirts, it prevents stray eyes catching sight of undergarments of lack thereof. So that's why its a girl thing. Admit it though, it's comfortable. 1 Signature Credit Goes To Midnightive "Moon Prism Power Make Up!!!!!" Hail Feld0
Kelvocity 211 October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 I don't think it's weird, people can sit however they want, no matter what the gender is. Simple as that. I, personally, never really pay attention to the way I sit. I just sit however I sit, I've never gotten comments on how I sit. Of course, I am homeschooled, still am, too. Kinda off-topic, but how does school compare? Just wondering. 1 Wait for it...

Therefore I can't really say anything as to whether I do or not. All I know is that I tend to move my leg position into random different places and they usually tend to stay relatively comfortable for a little bit atleast, I do alot of feet tapping and other stuff, but that might have to do with being in band That you for the information however! I don't think it's weird, people can sit however they want, no matter what the gender is. Simple as that. I, personally, never really pay attention to the way I sit. I just sit however I sit, I've never gotten comments on how I sit. Of course, I am homeschooled, still am, too. Kinda off-topic, but how does school compare? Just wondering. I agree, I see no problem with why people need to sterotype things into one gender or another. I understand that most people don't pay attention to the way they sit probably since its pretty subconscious of an action. And as for the school comparision I could really go and make a giant list or something about it but the basic thing is in my eyes I find it that I learn more, and i also don't feel isolated like I did in homeschooling. However the people are a bit more intimidating and judgmental. Again I could do a long list and if I really needed to I could do a topic about it sometime. But thats some quick things off the top of my head. Personally I like it better, but I guess it depends on how many friends you have and things you get to do. And also how good of a teacher your parents are, even if you use computer softwear your parents have to clarify sometimes. I feel teachers do better on this. Even if the days are longer I feel like they are much more productive, instead of just reading info from text and answering questions and stuff. I don't want to stray this to much however. So i guess if you want to talk more just PM me or something. Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Guest October 17, 2012 Share October 17, 2012 I don't sit that way because I can't stretch my legs that far... ;-; But I don't think its weird for guys to sit like that, there is a stereotype about it, but honestly no one has the right to tell you how to sit. Certainly I have no problem with you sitting not sitting that way as long as you have no problem with the way I sit .I agree no one has the right to tell you how to sit either. And like I said I sit perched like a bird almost sometimes. So I don't find it strange that much for people that sit like that boy. However I don't sit in that particular way to often. I think my legs would fall asleep alot, but then again with the ways I sit I probably get some weird bloodflow to. I don't see any real reason to have to sit a certain way really, I mean there isn't any medical reasons why guys can't sit with their legs crossed and girls can right? I already mentioned a possibility, but I have no idea how to shed light on the truth on that really. Besides it doesn't really harm me so and I haven't had anyone else mention anything against it or anything. Maybe theres something about it though somewhere, i've still yet to see it however.
