With the apples, it's tradition.   Other names they just are there.  Rainbow Dash, that probably came about because of her Rainbow Tail.  It either has to do with tradition, or the talent they most likely will have.

Their names match their cutie marks despite getting them after they're several years old because this was originally nothing but a kid's show, and nobody ever thought it would be analyzed that much. We're probably past the point of a non-metaphysical explanation, so don't think about it too much.

As for how to make a pony name, it seems to follow the same conventions as dwarven surnames: attach a noun to a relevant adjective.

Names generally match cutie marks. Which generally match personality/looks. So you base your name off of that. :P

I named my pony before I made her a canon cutie mark. So it had to be similar to the name. (Which made the backstory a pain)

Well, yuor parents go to the futur and see what cutie mark you have. Then they return to the modern era and name you. (just make it up but is has to fit.)

It works because Madam Pinkie can see their future when they're born. That's why Pinkie was eager to see baby Cakes, so she could name them. She could just tell the CMC what their talents are, but it's much more fun if they find it out themselves. :]

24305__safe_rarity_animated_glasses_suit IDEA!

Considering this, that means Scootaloo will have a Scooter for a cutie mark, Sweetie Belle will have a Bell, and Apple Bloom will have a Small apple!

Oh i'm a genius! *Not*

Well, Pinkie Pie; she's pink, and she likes to make pie and whatnot. Fluttershy; she's a Pegasus ( she flutters), and she's shy.

Like others have said, everyone in the Apple Family's name has something to do with apples.

I think if Apple Bloom did get a cutie mark as a car, her name would still be the same. However, I think that if she does ever get her cutie mark, it'll have something to do with apples.

Not all names match their cutie marks. Names are generally based on some character trait, and sometimes, that trait can be something unrelated to their special talent.

That makes since because Pinkie Pie didn't have Pies for her cutie mark its probably just coincidence some ponies are named for tier cutie marks without actually getting them yet.

Generally they're made of of a descriptive-of-the-character noun and adjective, but there is exceptions to the second part of the rule(most names are still punny).
