gaming Sony Has Filed An Anti Used Games Patent

While it's only a patent, it's something to worry about.

Personally the only good thing I could see coming out of this is the games becoming considerably cheaper. While PC games can't play used games, it's also worth noting that mist of them are also dirt cheap, especially with Steam around.

But if anything this going to be the nail on the coffin that screws over Sony.

Though personally I blame most this "anti-used game" stance on Gamestop

Sony nowadays is pretty much the douchebag in the videogame company. The last good thing they released was the PS2 and after they copied Super Smash Bros. with Playstation All-Star Battle Royale just to get more money topped it. They know they are going bankrupt sometime soon, they just want to postpone it.

Wow, that kind of sucks I was actually thinking of getting myself a PS4 whenever it is released. If something like that got implimented I guess I'd just stick with to my Xbox, though I heard some of my friends saying that something like this would be featured on the new Xboxes, I hope it was just some silly speculation they happened to come across.

A lot of people ask why I don't like Sony.

...This is one of the reasons.

Ironically, this money-making plan will probably end up with nothing but angry gamers and increased piracy.

Also, I wasn't aware of this happening to PCs. Then again, I only buy used games if they're not on Steam.

I really don't like Sony anymore.

This is rather anti-consumer, instead of trying to win over customers, they're just giving us the finger. Right now, that's the last thing they need. Sales of the PS3 are worse than they should be, the PSN outage caused a lot of concern for people that use their services, and their sole concern is money, and making it however they can.

Actually, I have to say thanks to Sony for introducing me to piracy. Basically, back in 2008, I bought a used PSP that ended up having problems. I took it back, and literally got several more bad ones before just deciding to buy it new at Walmart. Well, with this one, I bypass my 5 activation limit. See, you can only used downloaded content on up to 5 PSPs. Sony didn't have this in their Terms of Service (only mentioning movies and TV shows, which had a different limit) and Sony just really didn't care that I put in at least $150. I found out about Custom Firmware, and you know what happens from there... I felt that since I paid for the games, I should be allowed to play them, and if Sony didn't want to give me access to them, I could just get access another way. I'm happy they changed it, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That said, it is kind of funny that I can't seem to find any topics on the PlayStation forums about this. Either people on there just don't give a crap, or Sony is actively deleting topics it doesn't like. Bad call Sony, bad call.

WELLLLLP....I'm not wildly concerned about it. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot by being stupid, that's cool with me.. I've stopped buying used for the most part. The only thing that would suck for me is when it comes time for me to clear out my old stash of backlogged games I no longer play. Can't exactly sell games that you know. No one can use.

What they'd be WISE to do would be to do what they're doing NOW. Season passes for DLC etc. If you want to rope people in to a game for the long haul, all you have to do is allow the sale of a used game, but make it so that they can't buy any of the DLC or even play the game itself unless they buy the licenses. For example: Buy a new game, have the licenses in the box (Like PC games do). You buy the game used, obviously the keys will be used and you have to buy a new key for 5 bucks. You want DLC too? Season pass for 20. BOOM Suddenly you're making money off of people who bought the damn thing used.

Instead of shafting people who buy used totally, they could be making cash hand over fist. But no...execs aren't smart like that. Alas for them. I guess I'll be sticking with XBox. Anything good on Playstation always comes out on XBox anyway.....And Xbox always gets DLC exclusives first anyway (Skyrim for example...) And yes, I know that there've been stories that Durango is doing the same kind of thing. And I think they're stupid too. <<

Well, now that Sony did this. I really don't know the right words for what they just did. Not like I'm mad, but I am so shocked that Sony a gaming industry that has been around since the PS1 would do something like this. Now, PC Gamers have something to brag about and maybe this so called ''Console War'' will end.

Not a PC gamer or a handheld gamer, and I'm probably not going to be a big one anytime soon. That said I don't play video games that often anyway and when I do I just play the library I have. I haven't been buying new games for a long time. partly due to the fact that my PS3 is the first generation, and due to some complex techno babble, it doesn't play any of the brand new games anyway, due to it's software being so outdated.

So all in all, even if this is true it's not really effecting me at the moment.

Well at first I thought this was going to apply to any and all already active games, I mean I don't own a PS3 anyways I just have a PS2, but still this sounds meh.

I guess they want to make sure they make more money, to be honest I thought the whole PC game's not being able to be used on 2 systems is just so you can't let all your friends download the game from 1 copy.

It sorta sucks, but it is only a consideration, and not going to affect current games, so I'm not sure how to feel about it.

In the long run its bad for gamers who plan on buying sony content, but in the same note it kinda makes sense? I guess that when people buy used games instead of new they lose money, but honestly I'm pretty sure sony has plenty of money, although I have no idea on how good sony is doing financially.

I basically play all my stuff on Xbox, or PC, or maybe Wii anyways, so I can't give an opinion from a user's perspective though, it is going to harm people who play sony games thats for sure, so theres certainly some right I guess for that. Then again PC gamers can't buy used games in the first place.

I would also not be surprised if Microsoft does this same decisions for their future consoles. Although I guess technically they already make PC games to don't they? Still I'm sure they'll be after it sometime.

Who knows maybe I'm wrong though :P. I actually might be a PC gamer, except I have a laptop which even though it is pretty decent laptop for its age and the fact its a laptop, it overheats somtimes, and doesn't have the best quality gaming experience :P.(It has a bit of trouble Running Assassins creed 1. I had to lower to lowest settings when I played The force unleashed 2 on it for it to run, highest settings had me at like 1 FPS :P. Ran about 30 otherwise.)

Anyways getting off topic. I'm kinda not suprised in one sense, although I still kinda feel bad for people who buy sony products if this does happen. Of course if your the type who never bought used games anyways, and just buy stuff as it comes out, I doubt this will matter.

Although.. Doesn't that mean theres no more trade in's for Sony games? if this happens? Just a thought.

Being someone without even a PS3, I can't give a very good opinion from that perspective so sorry about that. Trying my best with my little experience :P.

PC gaming is superior, but even before I was into PC gaming, I always knew Xbox was superior. B)

ps3 has been a bad system since the start. You should've seen it's downfall starting with the removal of PS2 game support.

PC games don't have horrible controls. They have configurable controls most of the time, unlike console games. Also they support mods more easily, usually have better graphics, and are completely and udderly superior to their renditions on any "console"

I personally prefer the keyboard and mouse combo... When it's done right.

Usually it is, but sometimes game developers feel like giving us a crappy port, instead of actually taking to time to properly optimize the game, or god forbid actually program it for PC's. The result, the controls are fricken-freaken crap, and it will ruin your day.

Yes, it doesn't happen all the time, but it happens a good amount, enough to really irritate me. Games like Crysis, Dead Space, Dark Souls, have crappy controls, and it almost ruins the game. Dark Souls has freaken XBOX BUTTONS for controls! How am I supposed to navigate that with a keyboard? Oh yeah, that's right I CAN'T.

People will say: "Stop complaining and just buy an Xbox controller."

Screw that noise, I'm not dropping 30 dollars for a Xbox controller, because the game developers were too freaken lazy to do their jobs.

Like I said,I'm fairly sure you can at least change the controls of dead space in the settings menu. As I've played it myself. Most PC games DO allow you to set up the controls ANY WAY you like.

Most of the time, the controls problem isn't with the buttons, because you're right, you can re-map them.

The problem lies with the freaken mouse. Like in Dark Souls and Dead Space, I can barely even play because it's so hard to move the camera around. I've tried to adjust the mouse settings, but it doesn't do crap.

The problem is not on my end, I've PC gamed for quite some time, and I have a Razer Naga mouse, and a Razer mousepad. So it's not like I have a crappy mouse, or just plain suck at PC gaming...

Are you sure it's not a problem with your mouse? My adjusting of the mouse settings has fixed it when I've had problems with them. I don't really know what to say.

Remember this is just a patent. Lots of patents are issued, but never see the light of day.

Anyway, This is so not a good idea. I buy most games new, but this is a bad business move. Fro what I gather, the game you purchase will only work with YOUR User ID. So what happens if my PS4 breaks? Do I have to spend another$60-70 on the same game again? yeah...no.

Also, I recall Gamestop saying that they will refuse to sell PS4 and/or Xbox Next if they block used games...

I sincerely hope that is the case this time, I already get shafted enough by uncle Sam, I don't need Sony tag teaming me. I play video games to escape from depressing bullcrap not to have depressing bullcrap happen to me. Maybe if we all show enough outrage Sony will have no choice but to back off and actually consider not screwing their customers.
