While I do enjoy the occasional trollestia joke, I honestly believe she is a kind, loving ruler that sees ponykind as her children. She banished Luna as a last resort, and I question how much control she had over the Elements of Harmony (especially since Celestia and Luna had fallen out of harmony). However, I do wonder how being alive for millennia has affected her psychologically. It can't be easy watching everyone you love and care about pass away.

In my mind, that makes her even more sympathetic. Only she knows how many loved ones she's seen pass away while she remained. Worse, the ony constant in her eternal life, her sister, was banished for 1,000 years! How must have she felt during that absence? Worse still, with knowledge that she was the one who banished her. All that time not letting whatever sorrow she felt show. Edited by Steelquill

Wow, those two were made for each other!

I love Celestia as a character for what she stands for. Celestia is the sovereign of Equestria in both the deistic and secular sense, but unlike Xerxes (the movie version, not the real one) she is a kind motherly figure instead of an imposing overlord. (That and she's the real deal instead of just claiming divinity.) My take on the *ahem* "alternate character interpretations" of her is that some bronies are suspicious of anypony who commands absolute power, even someone good. It is common in some mythologies for the gods to be corrupt so it could be just a stigma that is hard to shake. Keep in mind that Equestria is a fantasy world, many of which slide towards romanticism, as do many fans of the genre. Historical romanticists were often suspicious of long-standing ecclesiastical institutions. I.e. the Chuch. (I'm Catholic, if it matters, which I hope it doesn't.) Celestia is a one pony church AND an absolute Monarch, you do the math. (Though technically speaking she's now a dual-arch with Luna, but that's a recent development.)

Celestia in many ways resembles a post-singularity character. Which are really hard to portray as benevolent in fiction, though not impossible. See Q and The Doctor. The former being callous and playful, but ultimately supportive of the human race's advancement. The Latter being unequivocally a good guy. Those two get off easy on the audience's trust because they are funny and have a lot of screen time. Celestia is composed, though not a stiff, and we don't see a lot of her. Malevolent god-like beings are easier to understand because, in order to work, they have to be petty enough to care about opposing the mortal protagonists but not actively hostile enough to just snap their metaphysical fingers and end the story right then and there.

An episode revolving around the Princess would be tricky at best, again not to say it can't be done, her nature just has to be treated carefully. Princess Celestia has been around for millenia. (Scource: Luna's imprisonment was 1,000 years ago and Discord said he was imprisoned for eons.) Any attempt at accurately portraying something of such age as an understandable, physical life-form is quite a challenge.

Ultimately though, this is what makes her the archetypal Queen, God, and Mother in the Junigian sense of those words. The Princess has, in many ways, transcended petty mortal vices like envy, pride, and wrath. (Luna got jealous, but she's the younger sister. Of course "young" again in relative terms.) That isn't to say the Princess doesn't get angry. When Twilight abused her magic and caused a riot in "Lesson Zero" she was understandably upset with her student. In contrast, when Fluttershy essentially stole her pet, but otherwise caused no potentially lasting harm, she wasn't even perturbed. Celestia still has emotions, she's just old enough to know WHAT to get angry about. Still, she tries to foster good relationships between her subjects and takes time to understand and walk amongst them. Prime example; when the Smith family came to Canterlot, Celestia could tell they needed a home without them speaking a word of such concerns. What does she do? Give them an entire valley for settling, that's overlooked by Canterlot. Thus, she's indirectly responsible for the creation of Ponyville.

Indirect action, in my opinion, is where Celestia's character shines. (Laugh at the pun if you must. I'll wait.) Celestia's will doesn't need magic to be evident and real. She has so much experience and wisdom that she knows how and what to say or do at the right time to get the result she wants. In the pilot, when Nightmare Moon's return was nigh, Celestia sends Twilight off seemingly unconcerned about her student's warning. When all is revealed however, it turns out Twilight's assigned task of making friends was actually purposeful instruction instead of off hoof advice. You wanna really think about it, Celestia might have recognized Twilight as the Element of Magic from her first day and took her as an apprentice purposefully to free Luna. (Though, comparatively, that's cutting it pretty close to the wire if she didn't already have contingency plan.) Then there is sending Twilight back her Friendship reports when Discord had pretty much won. Celestia gave Twilight the resolve to save the world not by direct words of wisdom but just by reminding her student what was important to her on a personal level. Considering that much of the world is directly effected and controlled by the "mortal" ponies already, Celestia's intangible influence in starting, reacting to, and changing events makes her a better metaphor for God than raising the sun does.

If God, does effect the world in a story, a better way to tell that story is by having Him do it through people! If Celestia just waved her horn to solve every problem at hand, it would damage not only her as a character, but the quality of the show! In past generations of MLP and similar shows, the world is so simplistic and the characters so devoid of negative emotion that conflict is nearly non-existent. The Princess could very well invoke such a reality! She could scorch away the Everfree Forest, and remove failings from everypony's mind, yet she chooses not to. To create such a world, would make her just as bad as Discord, just by imposing absolute order as opposed to absolute chaos. No conflict, no resolution, no advancement. Complete saccharine stagnation! Celestia (like God) understands that people/ponies aren't perfect. That bad comes of free will, but if you are forced into doing good, the action looses it's meaning.

Celestia knows mortals are good at heart, they just need to find their way. As one who's been around long enough to know every roadblock and how to overcome it, she's more than willing to nudge her subjects in the right direction.

Princess Celestia, bronies, she would probably laugh along with the haters and encourage us to as well.

This... this is just amazing. I have always wondered how I could explain Celestia yet I have never been able to figure out a way to do it eloquently. You are a true example of what it takes to understand the show and you have my respect.

I find the former irksome and the latter heresy. (Or fans seeking to twist what's canon like a pretzel until it's completely unrecognizable.) Maybe it is merely an audience that lives in democratic countries being suspicious of an absolute monarch? I too, would normally share this distrust, but as I've pointed out Celestia is "beyond" such mundane classification. The true weakness of a Monarchy is the inability of the people to defy an injustice set out by the Ruler. You may have a good king be succeeded by a bad king, the problem is you can't choose who you want on the throne. Celestia surpasses such concerns because, whether or not you believe her divine in nature, she is immortal so the problem of succession is null and void.

It has been concluded by scholars that the only perfect government that can exist is a theocracy, meaning God is the direct ruler of the secular government. Whether you believe in the concept of God or not, the idea makes sense either way. If there is a God that is perfect in every way and knows what's happened, happening, and will happen, then s/he would make a perfect governor.

I'm not arguing for or against religion one bit, I'm just saying that the mystical paradise of Equestria can only exist if it is through a theocracy, Celestia being that god figure in the helm. Notice how I put a little "g" in the word god because Celestia isn't an all-knowing omnipotent being that describes what God is in the Bible or what-have-you. Because of this, there will be conflict by menacing entities like Discord or Nightmare Moon.

The writers found a sweet spot between perfection and average-ness. All is well in Equestria with some imperfections in between. It isn't heaven, but it isn't Earth either. This makes for a perfect tv cartoon show.

You sir, said in a paragraph what would take me three. You have my compliments.

I agree with My Little Pwny completely! I submit that all the "tyrant" jokes are doing a severe injustice to the character because they portray Celestia with flaws that she not only has NEVER been attributed to, but ones she would have been LOOOOOOOOOOOONG past by now! I always thought Equestria was set up as a "confederate theocracy" if that makes any sense. The individual city-states appear to run themselves but the Princesses have divine right to intervene in times of crises.

the trollestia jokes where inevitable. she had it coming. the thousand year banishment, making twilight believe she had huge punishment, making all the mane six believe they had huge punishments, making spike put effort into sending away scrolls when as we saw could easily come get them her self and lastly having the strongest wings in all equestria yet she still gets guards to carry her everywhere. she has all the aspects of a troll, but the molestia stuff is just straight up retarded.

Come on, she had the molestia stuff coming to. You're an old pony who's asking much younger ponies to write to you weekly! She also approaches the mane 6 from behind and surprises them.

However, I do agree with you that the whole molestia stuff is stupid, it's just that the examples are kinda funny to think about.

All those actions were quoted were either justified or not wrong at all. As for the letter thing, most of my friends are years older than I am and I like to write to them. Moreover she's thousands of years old, the only other pony she should be "allowed" to interact with by those rules is Luna. I don't think that's fair to either of them, the Princesses love their subjects and want to be casual with them.

Now before I begin I would just want to say this: what I will write below is simply a counter what you have say... to point out the errors of what your post. It is nothing more and nothing less (I am saying this because my post could be considered 'strong' by some but that is because I feel strongly about the subject).

------------------------------------------------------------

The thousand year banishment: Who might I ask can say that she had any other choice in the matter, especually since Celestia was using the Elements of Harmony without being connected in friendship with her sister. To be honest I am impressed she was able to get them to work at all, as the Elements of Harmony are not supposed to work if there isn't harmony between the wielders of the Elements.

Making Twilight believe she had huge punishment: are you talking about when Twilight used the Want It Need It spell and created chaos in Ponyville? Celestia had the right to be upset, for her to find out her own student would use such a spell and think so little of her as to believe her mentor be mad at her for not having a friendship letter.

Making all the mane six believe they had huge punishments: when did Celestia do this, which episode?

Making Spike put effort into sending away scrolls when as we saw could easily come get them her self: Did you actually just say that? Celestia is a the Ruler of the Day, one who with her sister rules all of Equestria! Do you honestly think she would able able to personally pick up even a 4th of her student's letters?

Lastly having the strongest wings in all equestria yet she still gets guards to carry her everywhere: Who says she have the strongest wings in Equestria? That and there is protocol that needs to be followed with her being the princess. Do you honestly think her guards would allow her to fly everywhere by herself, to take the effort needed to fly on her own two wings? You have seen how ponies treat her, they would be most likely appalled at the very idea of their monarch doing such?

She has all the aspects of a troll: Hmm, lets think for a moment on what a troll is. A troll is one who says or does that which would upset or anger others, making a 'joke' at others expense. A real troll is never positive, as they cause grief or make others upset and then laugh at the trouble they have caused.

Sorry but she is not a troll, she doesn't have any of the aspects of being a troll, she is far too nice for such actions. In reality Discord is around 10 times the troll Celestia could ever be.

I do genuinely love Celestia, she has a brilliant design, a good role, an amazing voice actor, a great personality, etc. That said, I love the Trollestia jokes. Not so much Molestia, just Trollestia, because there ARE a lot of things in the show that could be taken to where Celestia was just snickering in her throne and having some fun. The ticking Sun Clock in Lesson Zero is a prime example. That one is just begging for jokes to be made. But honestly, people getting pissy over jokes about a character is frankly stupid. Not a big deal. It may be upsetting to those who don't find any of the jokes funny but it's certainly not worth starting arguments over or anything.

Fun fact: That's the point of them being jokes. They aren't true. Thusly, the entire point of these jokes is that it would be funny if it were true xD The few people who truly do believe she's a troll are the ones who probably aren't fans of the show. They probably take the fact that some people, who think it WOULD be funny if she WERE a troll, run with it, and portray her as a troll no matter what. Those people you can hate sure, but I don't see the point in keeping a poker face and die-harding to defend Celestia from any and all jokes in existence, because it's a loosing battle. Jokes and humor are a part of everything, they're used all the time, for all the characters, not just Celestia. The fact her being a troll is it's own meme now doesn't mean anything other than the fact the show has a lot of points in which the jokes can be made. Once more, it's not a big deal.

Now that said, this is not the point of this thread. As far as I was aware, this thread is about appreciating normal Celestia :P So I suggest we move on.

It shouldn't be suprising though as when fans of the show have a pony they really like, they don't like that pony to be shown negitively.

It is annoyingly common for the Luna fans to try and make Celestia the villian, and this is coming from a Luna fan. Princess Luna is my favorite princes and yet I have much respect for Celestia.

------------------------

This is how I consider what happened over 1000 years ago, and yes there is a reason it is told like a creation story of a sorts, and I am planning on making this view of what happened a fanfiction. The only part that I have 'made up' so to speak is the bit about the Celestia and Luna's parents:

"Once, long ago. Long before the princess ever ruled Equestria, it is said that our race was created by two beings... the first alicorns. Later they would gain the titles of King and Queen of Equestria, but at this time they simply wanted children of their own. As such, using their great powers they created the first of each kind of pony. For life in the clouds they created the pegusas, those that would in the future actually learn to control the elements that played such a part in their lives. For life on the ground they make the earth ponies, who would as time went on learn how to bring life and growth to the land. Then there where unicorns, the only ones that could directly tap into the energy that naturally surrounded the land, that would be given the responsibilities of being leaders.

It took time for these three groups to learn how to work together, and there was even conflict... it is said it was not until after the King and Queen past on and the Princesses come to rule that each of the ponies truely learned to work as one. Which brings us to fact that while the King and Queen had in a since created for themselve children they were not content. They wanted children the why others did and hoped for the day that they would gain such. Which they did in time, with first Celestia being born and then her sister Luna though history does not speak of how many years apart they are.

It would seem though something happened as there was a time another ruled between the time of the King and Queen to the time when the Princesses ruled. A time where a entity of unrest and disharmony gained control of Equestria, one that tore apart the bonds that had been formed during the rule of the King and Queen. Discord, as was his name, turned friends and family against each other. Caused confusion and even manipulated the ponies to start wars with those that where not ponies. It is said he did all this because he found it funny, it caused him to laugh to see that under his care everything could unravel by the seams.

The princesses realized they would not be able to fight him without aid, and while history is silent on what had happened to the King and Queen it was clear they must not have been in a position to aid their daughters against Discord. Interestingly enough there is reason to believe that Discord was most fond of oldest sister, that though he was a being of chaos even he could recognize beauty. The sisters went in search of an ancient power said to only be able to be controlled by the bonds of friendship... the Elements of Harmony.

Celestia and Luna, with the Elements of Harmony, faced Discord... yet Discord had a plan, as he would do so over a thousand years later with six young mares, where he worked to turn the sisters against each other to play upon weakness of their hearts. He failed to turn them against each other, yet it would seem that he may have managed to to plant seeds of doubt in the heart of the youngest. That though he was bound in stone he would help bring about his goal of turning the sisters against each other. Some time passed, and the chaos was replaced with order and harmony. Life returned to the land as did it's beauty. Each of the sisters took on a duty, Celestia took on the duty of the day while the youngest Luna took on the duties of the night. There was peace, and ponies lived in happiness... yet all was not well.

The seeds had been planted by Discord, they just needed to grow and with the older sister Princess Celestia growning so busy with her royal duties as well as the fact that ponies played during the day while sleeping during the night... the youngest sister Princess Luna begin to feel alone. Unhappiness grow in Princess Luna's which she hide from her sister who seemed so busy, unhappiness grew into jealousy and anger. Luna begin to believe that her sister and her subjects did not care about her, that they thought she was weaker then her sister. What happened at this time is unknown but it would seem that Princess Luna looked for a way of making herself more powerful, of finding a way for the ponies of Equestria to have to see her night. By this the time Princess Celestia realized what had happened it was too late, and she found that she had lost her sister... that in her place was a mare of darkness calling herself Nightmare Moon.

Princess Celestia tried to bring her sister back, to take her from the dark shell she saw her in but she failed and because she was either not strong enough to, or was unable to bring herself to do so, defeat Nightmare Moon. She went to the only power she know that could help her... the Elements of Harmony. Yet they did not work the way they should, as the bond Celestia had shared with her sister was broken... but she was still able to get them to work partly and with the Elements of Harmony she was able to banish Nightmare Moon to the moon itself. To save Equestria from endless darkness and the suffering that would come from it, she gave up her only friend and beloved sister. Such sacrifice cost much and became of the lose of her sister Princess Celestia had need to take on burden of taking care of both the day and the night until she could find the one that would be able to bring back her sister.

Towards the end of one thousand years Princess Celestia found her sister's savior through that of a little filly... one who's talent was magic itself. She took this filly as her student so that she could be prepared for the part so would play in Equestria's history, and it would seem Celestia and her student became very close. Yet after this filly was grown into a young mare

Yet in the place of the frightening Nightmare Moon... was that of a scared and confused alicorn. The sister and other half of Celestia had been recovered and all because of the heroes of Equestria. At long last the sisters where together again and their joy was full."

Now that said, this is not the point of this thread. As far as I was aware, this thread is about appreciating normal Celestia :P So I suggest we move on.

THANK YOU! Both for the point, and for bringing up what I was gonna say. The thread is called "Shrine of the sun goddess" for a reason. You're point in humor is fitting, yet your decision to actually NOT bash Celestia is . . . ironic considering your patron.

She deserves much more respect, I agree. But also, she along with Luna needs more screentime and the audience needs more information on the royal family background. See, the problem I have with the princesses, is that there isn't much depth behind them. For all we know, they're just there to rule Equestria and night and day. We don't know much about their past except for that Cadance is related to them, they stopped Discord, and Celestia defeated Nightmare Moon. Other than that, it seems like many other episodes' plots (Mysterious Mare Do Well included...) seemed more important to the writers than this huge gap in MLP:FiM.

I know that I sound like I care more about her getting more screentime rather than respect, but seriously, I do respect Celestia as the kind-hearted, optimistic ruler she truly is. In fact, she's in the top section of my list of favorite MLP:FiM characters due to her personality and style of ruling Equestria. You wonder why Equestria's filled with such nice citizens (and a beautiful/kind atmosphere) that many bronies dream of living in? Well, you first have to look at the ruler to determine the general behavior of any other pony. By the way, the only thing keeping her from advancing in that list actually is that she doesn't quite help much against significant villains (captured by Nightmare Moon, simply didn't help with Discord, defeated by Chrysalis).

But seriously, how does somepony like this:

Nice post Scholar. From that perspective Twilight Sparkle has become a very significant player in the lore of Equestria.

I deposit that all of them have. Canterlot Tower has stained glass windows depicting the defeat of Discord. Their inclusion as the downfall of Nightmare Moon and then the second defeat of Discord might just amount to being canonized.

You know, I was thinking. Whether they are worshiped or not, I know Celestia and Luna don't have an official church. For a moment let's say they did. What do you guys think it would be like? Would they have temples? Would they have sermons at noon and midnight at two different altars? What would the clergy be like? Would they treat the Princesses in person like their other subjects, with even MORE reverence (if you can imagine that), or conversely more casually due to seeing them as true saviors of the soul? What do you guys think?

I ask because I've been reading Fallout Equestria where the Mane character and at least a few others actually refer to them as goddesses directly as opposed to Princesses. (Celestia far more often, but Luna is given equal respect.) Also because I'm writing my first fan fiction and thought this might be an interesting development to use.

Maybe Celestia has her own friend/relationship errors. It'd make a good episode. You know, I think it would be interesting if Celestia wrote a letter to Twilight.

Brilliant twist, m'lady! Might I say your ponysona depiction is quite beautiful as is your name. T'would not be out of place on the show proper.

Princess Celestia will always be a great leader. Leaders will always be in the position of "jokebut". Whomever the current president may be, whomever the king may be, whomever the prime minister may be, they will always end up at the wrong end of criticism regardless of their good or bad performance. Frustration with a government casts leaders in a negative light and somepony is ALWAYS frustrated.

From bitterness I arise. I shall thrive in the cool darkness of this moonlit winter's night. Oh how far I have arisen to meet you my friends.
