Why Twilicorn Works: Insight on the Supporting Side

Everyone bowing to Twilight massively bothered me as well, although if it never happens again and if Twilight bows to her friends at some future date then I would call it good.

When she first turned and during the coronation itself and maybe some other special occasions this is forgivable just so long as they don't overdo it.

I hated the idea of alicorn Twilight at this point in the story because I felt that it was way too soon, that there was not nearly enough plot buildup and character development to justify such a massive change and that doing something like this so soon puts Twilight dangerously close to Mary Sue territory. The fact that is happened at all didn't surprise me and I expected something like this to happen eventually but making it after only 3 seasons is very jarring especially with the way it was introduced with a sloppily thrown together episode crammed with as many songs as humanly possible with very little actual dialogue and plot development.

I think that even if this works out and I cannot emphasize enough just how much I hope it does there will still be a feeling of abruptness that will not completely go away but with good writing can be smoothed over, I am thinking Celestia maybe originally intended this for a bit later but had to rush it because of an emergency for example would make perfect sense for the abrupt nature of this. Despite my opposition though even I admit that if this is done right it presents some great opportunities for character development from Twilight and the other mane 6 as well as much overdue character development from Luna and Celestia (Celestia especially) because we have seen her in the role of teacher and ruler but not too much about Celestia the pony or about her relationship with Luna. And also an opportunity to introduce some new characters and have maybe a bit more adventure stories with Twilight and the mane 6 traveling back to different parts of Equestria and learning more about alicorns,

I have no problem what so ever with Twilight being a Alicorn, the only problem I have thus far, is how bad Magical Mystery Cure actually was. It was rushed and had so many songs, that it felt like the writers had no idea what to fill those 20 minutes with and just wrote a bunch of songs to fill space

My brohoofs, just take them! You fiend! :D Such an excellent post. You have taken all of my thoughts on the subject and put them all in one thread, quite neatly I might add and way better put than I could ever do. I am so glad that I am not the only one who sees all of the great possibilities with Twilicorn.

Season 4, you taunt me so. I am already looking forward to it.

Celestia bowing to Twilight didn't really bother me. In the military, officers always salute one another regardless of who is higher up; a general will always salute a lieutenant. It was a recognition thing, not a rank thing.

Saluting is one thing. Bowing is another.

Saluting is sign of recognition, greeting. Bowing is a acknowledgement of one's superiority in an hierarchy or the importance of something more important than yourself.

You salute your bothers and sisters. And bow to a ruler whose authority is undeniable. Not even to a president should you bow.

I don't really like the whole Twilight becoming an Alicorn. Luckily, there's fan fiction/parallel universes where she could reject becoming an Alicorn and remain an Unicorn.

I can deal with it and will remain a fan to the end of my life.

But if Twilight is immortal she will suffer great sorrow.

Like this....

These are ponies though, so perhaps bowing is just easier? I think it was just an honorable bow, as in congratulations. Perhaps it is just her way of saluting a fellow princess.

The ponies in the Royal Guard salute Shinning Armor.

Just as he salutes them. However, many scenes when Celestia appears, ponies bow to her.

EDIT: But I like your idea. It's certainly better than having the other Mane Six bowing to Twilight.

There. I said it.

What kind of show would it be if everything always stayed the same? That 65 episode mark is where most shows tank. It's the part where you start to crave more than just the same thing over and over. Give us something new. Doctor Who, give us a new companion. Lost, give us some really good revelation about the island. The Walking Dead, let the characters move forward in their quest to do...whatever they're trying to do, I dunno, I don't watch it. :v

Point being, My Little Pony has not changed much from the first episode. Eventually, the team would run out of ideas, the episodes wouldn't be as fresh, and the show would die. But with the alicorn Twilight, there's a ton of new ideas for episodes. Maybe Rainbow Dash is jealous of Twilight's flying? Or maybe Twilight has trouble flying? What if Dash and Fluttershy both try to coach her, with the better flying Dash pushing her too hard, and the worse flying Fluttershy getting more progress because she isn't pushing Twilight too hard?

TV shows need to change. If they don't, then people will start to say "Hey, hold on! We don't know anything more about this mysterious figure as we did in the first episode!" or "It's been two seasons and the group is still stuck in Los Angeles! What's that about?" In an episodic series like My Little Pony, there is no long term goal for the characters, though, like in Lost or The Walking Dead. So our team's not going to be trying to get out of Los Angeles every day. There's a new adventure every episode. But f the characters don't go through some sort of change, we run into the same problem. "Hey, the Mane Six are the same as they were five seasons ago! Didn't we already have an episode where Twilight freaks out, or Pinkie has an existential crisis?"

I've gotta cut myself off before I start rambling. :v But really, Bronies...calm the buck down, it's not the end of the world.

But I'm apart of a dedicated fandom.  Being open to change is heresy.  We must retain our pure blood and anything that is not within our preconceptions is a path to the beast.  Non-unicorn Twilight?  That's like changing Jesus to a woman.  That's why I only watch the pilot two-parter.  It was the safest and truest age of our fandom.  Every new episode shows me something I didn't see coming.. and that taints My Little Pony.  Pinkie Pie has future-telling powers?  She didn't before!  WTF stop ruining it!

It is my personal headcanon that Friendship is Witchcraft is foretelling the canon before it happens. Twilight mentions her brother? She appears in the season 2 finale. Pinkie Pie is a gypsy? She appears as...well, a gypsy in It's About Time. Twilight becomes a princess? She's...um...a princess in Magical Mystery Cure.

FiW is a less sugar-coated, more blunt version of the FiM canon, just a few months ahead.

(I'm kidding, I'm kidding. xP)

Um, I'm sorry, but are you trolling right now? Are you serious? Because if you are serious, then you are seriously crazy. Honestly, how could you go through life without knowing about 20% cooler or YAY!

I think that it was a great idea that Twilight became a Alicorn and ,as you said, this means that they have more ideas for new episodes. I would fail to see how someone would not see that as a good thing though.

EDIT: I must say, I think seeing Twilight Sparkle with wings is a bit awkward cause I'm used to her with them. I just need to get used to it that's all

MLP FOREVER!!!

Best pony is obviously Pinkie Pie followed by Fluttershy.

BTW ponies rock and so does the series.

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today I learned that we shouldn't hate change just because it's different. Change is an opportunity to experience something new and if you give it a chance, you might find that you like it even more than what came before!

Your faithful student,

decoherence

Many people say this, many say otherwise, to be honest, it's a matter of opinion on who likes her and who doesnt. Anyways, good read, good to see not everyone is becoming too self centered on this.

I myself disliked this season, not even because of the Twilicorn. Of course, change isn't always bad, that doesn't stop it from being bad from time to time.

I'm pretty sure he was mocking the kinds of people that say that. XP

And my reply wasn't necessarily me agreeing, either. It is silly how over the top some people can be, though.

I think that there's something to sticking with the same old same old because it's very comforting, and a lot of people like that.  It's predictable, but secure.  Change is new and scary, and I don't blame people for being resistant to it.

Besides, I think in this case it may be less an issue of change and more of the possible bad that can come out of the idea of Twilicorn itself, since it really kind of makes her headed in more of a Mary Sue direction than before.  I think that other changes, like expanding the world in different ways, would have been changes that would still generate many more story ideas without splitting the fanbase.

True. I also don't blame other Bronies getting their tails in a twist, but, at the same time, I'm kind of screaming in my head for others to get over it. >.<

I dunno, maybe I just need to wait for it to cool over. I'm sure this craziness will be over by season 4. *knock on wood*

Sighs, please there is no proof that Twilight will outlive her friends or that there will be all this sorrow and technically friends and family will die at some point anyway. Heck based on what I saw with Cadance I believe that it is unlikely for Twilight to stay the same when it comes to age.

I've always hated it when people write fan fiction for the sole purpose of changing something they don't like about the canon.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think being an Alicorn really suits Twilight, It was inevitable that this was going to happen to her. She saved Ponyville loads of times, and she has a massive knowledge of magic. Why would people complain about her being an Alicorn?.

I personally hate the whole princess thing though. She didn't need to become one, grrr!.

Meh, I'm indifferently tolerable to the whole Twilight alicorn thing. One one hoof, Twilight did progressively grow as a character, and the season 3 finale (in my opinion) actually did a really good job on bringing that character arc to a happy and satisfying close. In fact, the ONLY thing I see wrong with the twilight alicorn thing is that I think they kinda jumped the metaphorical gun on this character change. There were soooo many possible stories and scenarios and whatnot that could've been told with Unicorn Twilight, but now most of those possibilities are gone. They probably could've waited another season or two before opening this ark of the covenant and gotten the same satisfying result without the heavy fan-based backlash. (Oh well, Hindsight's 20/20 apparantly).

What I think about Twilicorn I say it would make even more challenges/adventures for her.

She obviously won't leave her friends.

Her personality won't change!

'hugs twilight' I like you no matter what happens.
