there are a few theories that people revolve around, all of them ending with the Apple parents' untimely death

 

this is pretty much canon since the two shooting stars in that one episode's ending

 

the question at this time is really how they died, which could really have happened in any number of ways, since the show has never really given us any leads

AFAIK, Hasbro hasn't said AJ's parents are dead, just away & not expected back.  Most fanfics assume they died an accidental death.  AJ left the farm (as seen in The Cutie Mark Chronicles) & they assume it was in part because of grief at their death .  If they are dead, it would have to be after Apple Bloom was born.  The scene in episode 23 shows Big Mac & Granny waving goodbye but no AB & no parents. Perhaps AB was taking a nap.

PoniesRFun    Excellent pictures, but where is her hat? She is almost never without it.  For example, in Bridle Gossip she wore it in the hot tub & in Canterlot Wedding, she started not wearing it, but at the end was wearing it w a wedding dress.

 

She isn't wearing it in Best Night Ever, but her Gala dress has a fancier version.  This is the only time I can think of when she doesn't have her hat while awake.
